Sunscreen for the Scalp

Published on by

We have all been there. You spent the entire day out in the sun and are diligent in applying SPF only to discover that Quintessence Q-Sunshade Leave In Hair Conditioner and Scalp Protectant SPF 30you have a burnt scalp. I usually have a sunburn right down the part in my hair. Your scalp is fried to the point that showering and combing your hair has become a form of torture. A few days later your sunburned scalp starts peeling and you have little flakes of skin in your hair. Luckily, there has been an answer to our prayers. It is Quintessence Q-Sunshade Leave in Hair Conditioner and Scalp Protectant SPF 30. It is a broad spectrum SPF 30 that you just apply and leave in, so easy! Plus it helps protect color treated hair and condition, moisturize and nourish. I even use this on my little one; his hair is still baby fine and sparse. I tried using the spray sunscreen to protect his scalp, but it just sprayed onto his hair and not his scalp. With this leave in conditioner, I can rub it onto his scalp without him looking like a grease pit. It is a definite summer essential.

Is the SPF in your Makeup enough?

Published on by

As an esthetician we are constantly asking our clients if they are using an SPF. Proper sun protection is so important in skin care and it is the number 1 most important anti-aging product in your regimen. All too often I have women tell me that they have SPF in their makeup and therefore they believe that they do not need to apply a sunscreen. This is absolutely NOT true. While it is a great added bonus that your makeup contains SPF, it is not a substitution for applying a sunscreen. The truth is most people do not apply the layers of coverage they need from their makeup to get proper sun protection. Also, sunscreen needs to be applied every 2 hours when outdoors. Your face would be piled with makeup at the end of the day. An SPF 30 or higher should be part of your daily morning skin care regimen. You are welcome to apply your makeup over that for added benefit. Skinstore has a wide selection of sunscreens to offer for all skin types. One of our favorites is SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50.

Men Face Higher Skin Cancer Rate

Published on by

Sunscreen protection is vital for both men and women. Studies have proven skin cancer is more prevalent in men. Men get twice the overall number of skin cancers and three times more squamous cell carcinomas that women do according to Tatiana M. Oberyszyn, PhD, assistant professor of pathology at Ohio State University in Columbus. Why? Men are more likely than women to have outdoor jobs and they are less likely to protect their skin with sunscreen. In addition, men are less likely to perform self-exams and to go see the doctor. Is the application of a sunscreen a cosmetic issue or a health issue?

To test this theory, Oberyszyn’s team exposed a breed of hairless mice to ultraviolet rays from a sun lamp. The mice underwent eight- to 10-minute tanning sessions three times a week for six months. That was enough to give both male and female mice skin cancer. As a side note, this is an important finding as well: Really validating the negative impact of using tanning beds on a regular basis.

“We found males got skin tumors earlier, got more of them, and more of the tumors were severe,” states Oberyszyn. Tests of male and female mouse skin turned up a surprising finding. The male skin cells carried fewer antioxidants than the female skin cells. It turns out that male skin is more sensitive than female skin. Skin cancer is the cancer men are most likely to face.

In fact, men over 50 are more than twice as likely as women to develop and die from skin cancer. Men are also about twice as likely to develop basal and squamous cell skin cancers as well. And it’s not just men over 50 who are at risk: a recent study by the Mayo Clinic has found that the rates for squamous and basal cell carcinoma have jumped for men under 40.

Men typically have less hair to cover ears and scalp, two important areas where they develop skin cancer more often than women. Men also top women in skin cancers of the often-exposed back, chest, and shoulders. These are the areas that require self-examinations. It is time for men to step up and put sunscreen on!

Men must put an ample amount of sunscreen on, and reapply every 70 minutes when directly under the sun. Hats that have protection for the neck and ears should be used. The reality is that sun protection is a very serious health issue and should not be ignored.

We recommend Menscience TiO2 Sunblock SPF 30. It is packaged in an easy to use and carry tube to facilitate application. It combines advanced ingredients for the ultimate sunscreen; an ultralight, non-greasy waterproof and sweat proof formula that provides maximum protection (SPF30). While moisturizing, nurturing and helping to repair the damaging effects of the sun: For everyday use or for extreme environmental conditions. It is appropriate for all skin types.

Must Have Travel Products for Spring Break

Published on by

With Spring Break around the corner I am sure there are plenty of college students and families gearing up for a week off of school and a much deserved break from the day-to-day. Whether you are heading to the beach or a mini vacay the key to packing for a Spring Break trip is to pack light. Bathing suit, sandals and just the beauty basics are all you need for a care-free week off from life. I have provided some super simple ways to lighten the load for your trip.

First Aid Beauty Gentle Cleansing Wipes are a natural, quick and easy way to wipe down after a day in the sun to cleanse the skin. They are gentle enough for any skin type and contain Aloe to help soothe sunburns and calm skin. Speaking of sunburns, another Spring Break essential is a quality sunscreen. Coola is a great organic brand that offers a wide range of sunscreens. My favorite is the Coola Sport Continuous Spray SPF 35 in the Pina Colada scent. Just the scent alone makes this product Spring Break worthy. It is easy to apply and last for 40 minutes while in the water. Pair it with the Coola Sport Liplux SPF 30 to protect and nourish your lips. After a day outside a nice shower is just what you need to continue the relaxation. Instead of lugging around your large shampoo and conditioner bottles take the Frederic Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Starter Kit. It is the perfect size for travel and gives your hair a wonderful clean scent and shine. If your beachy waves are just too fantastic to shower away than try a dry shampoo to refresh your hair, add volume and absorb oil. Alterna BAMBOO Style Cleanse Extend Translucent Dry Shampoo may be sprayed on the roots and works with all hair colors. To finish packing, throw in a toothbrush and some clothes and you are set for a fabulous week of sunshine!

The Golden Rules to a Golden Glow

Published on by

When you reach for your sunscreen, are you 100% certain you know what you are applying? Here are a few tidbits of knowledge to help you through the summer without getting burned.

Did you know that sunscreen loses its efficacy after 12 months? Ingredients that contain sun protection factors such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are active ingredients so they can’t be expected to last forever. They have a shelf life just like your peanut butter so be sure to purchase a new bottle every summer.

*Helpful tip: Mark your bottle of sunscreen with the date you bought it!

Did you know you should apply sunscreen (no matter then SPF) every TWO hours? Sunscreen does not block the sun entirely and although you may have slathered yourself with sunscreen, it is not meant to last you a whole day exposed to the Sun’s harmful rays.

*Helpful tip: If you out and about, set an alarm on your phone every two hours to remind you!

Are you covering all the necessary spots or just your nose? Ears, eyelids, the scalp, lips and feet are the most often forgotten body part when applying sunscreen. Be sure to cover these areas to protect yourself from sun damage and possible health concerns.

Helpful tip: Spray sunscreens are incredibly convenient and you can cover yourself in seconds without greasy hands! A few of our faves are La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Spray and Supergoop SPF 30 Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C.

Pool Party Prep

Pool Party Prep

BBQ’s and pool parties go hand in hand during these summer months. While most men don’t even flinch about summer time, women tend to go into full detox mode. All we need is a little bit of preparation tips & tricks to get the ball rolling and come prepared when that pool party arrives. So instead of biting your finger nails and becoming a detox princess, follow these guidelines…

After you’ve marked your special date on your calendar, the preparation can begin. You know you will be in a bikini soon, so what immediately comes to mind? Maybe we need a little bit of color, or spot treatments to concern areas? With the few weeks leading up to the event, we can exfoliate our body  just like our faces a few times a week. This will get rid of all of the dead skin on the surface so that when we are ready to reveal our skin it will look healthy and smooth. In between exfoliation sessions, don’t forget about shaving. I know I am probably not the only one who likes to borrow good men’s shaving products. Grab some Jack Black Supreme Cream Triple Cushion Shave Lather. I say if it’s strong and comfortable enough for a man, then it would be bliss for a woman. After you shave, don’t forget to prevent and protect your freshly shaved areas with some ingrown hair/ bump fighters! For a suggestion, try Whish Flawless Bump Fighter.

The next prep step would be to pick out and apply a self tanner. We want to look golden and sun kissed at our events but without harm from the sun! We suggest that you take a look at the following self tan products:

Jan Marini Bioglycolic Sunless Self Tanner

Decleor Aroma Sun SPF 8 Hydrating Self- Tanning Milk

Pevonia Self- Tanning Emulsion

TanTowel Plus Full Body Self- Tanning Towelettes

They are all different options for different types of needs. They range from creams, to lotion/milk textures and even gel textures. These will get you glowing quickly and what a way to help slim up your figure too! Now that you are pretty much ready to flaunt your pool party body and smile, there are a few other items you should remember to stay flawless. Be sure you remember to always wear your preferred SPF products for the face and the body! If you need, there are always some relaxing and soothing after sun products as well.

You can also protect your hair during these weekend water & sun celebrations with products like:

Alterna BAMBOO UV Color Protection Vibrant Color Shampoo

Rene Furterer Protective Summer Fluid

Phyto Protective Sun Veil

Well I think we’ve pretty much covered as much as possible on how to prepare from head to toe. You should feel tan, toned, smooth and fit to stun when you arrive at your summer soiree. Oh, and don’t forget those designer shades!

Fact or Fiction? Common Myths in the Beauty World

Published on by

MYTH #1: The FDA ensures that all cosmetics statements are factual before you buy them.

A: FALSE! The FDA or Food & Drug Administration does not require approval of cosmetics before their manufacture and sale since the products are neither labeled for dietary consumption or as a medial supplement. The FDA onlySkinStore.com regulated the claims made and the labeling provided on each product. Cosmetics can ONLY claim to change the appearance of the body or skin, not the function.

MYTH #2: Sunscreen can actually increase the risk of skin cancer.

A: FALSE! Octinoxate is a chemical sunscreen that is preferred by sensitive skin types. Most physical sunscreens contain zinc oxide which can cause irritation. NO sunscreen can block 100% of the sun’s rays (UVB, UVA or otherwise). You will notice a large change in the way sunscreens are marketed in the United States. The Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, labels the strength of the sunscreen but does no matter how the strong sunscreen, they lose their potency after about two hours and need to be reapplied.

MYTH #3: Exfoliating scrubs can be used as an explosive.

A: FALSE! Most exfoliants or “scrubs” contain a variety of grainy materials ranging from fruit pits to seeds to diatomaceous earth, which help slough of dead skin cells from the surface. Diatomaceous earth (DE), marine sediment or fossil algae, is used in many other products not limited to the skincare industry. DE can also be combined with nitroglycerin to classify as dynamite, which is never found in skin care products.

MYTH #4: Your waterproof mascara coats your lashes in plastic.

A: TRUE! Plastic derivatives have been used in a variation of products for many years. Plastic derivatives or polymers are crucial in the production of hairspray, hair gel, liquid bandages and even perfumes. Polymers, when viewed under a microscope, are perfectly round spheres and do not damage the surface of the skin or irritate sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, or nose.

MYTH #5: Lipsticks contains a lethal amount of lead.

A: FALSE! In 2009, the FDA developed a method of testing to determine the amount of lead in products. It was then the FDA confirmed that the amount of lead found in lipstick was detected in 20 lipstick products but very low and did not pose any safety or health concerns. The lead levels are attributed to color additives and other ingredients that are acceptable by the FDA.

Top 10 Summer Must Haves

Top 10 Summer Must Haves

Summer of 2014 is quickly approaching and we hope you enjoy it to its fullest! Whether you’ll be playing on a sandy beach in Mexico, lounging by the pool in Las Vegas, or hiking the Himalayas in India you’re probably well equipped with a goody bag full of your favorite skin care products (you are, a SkinStore customer after all!) We always want to know what you’re toting around to keep your skin looking wonderful through the seasons- and we’re sure that you’re curious to see what our top favorites are, so we’ve compiled a list of THE top 10 must haves for this fabulous summer!

Clarisonic. ‘Nuff said! This is our number one seller and for a good reason! Clarisonic uses a sonic technology to cleanse deeply within the pores and is two times more effective than manual cleansing and six times more effective at removing make-up! Therefore with daily use of the Clarisonic you’ll prevent breakouts and clogged pores, and the exfoliating factor will make large pores appear smaller, and the texture of the skin much smoother! It’s great for all skin types and all ages. Staff favorite, customer favorite… we can’t say enough great things about this product!

Antioxidants. Chances are, you’re spending a lot of time outdoors during the summer chasing after kids, swimming, playing outdoor sports and barbequing… while you may be religiously applying sunscreen to protect your skin, you may not be applying antioxidants which ward off free radicals that cause lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Antioxidant serums are a great way to go, because they’re light in consistency so they won’t feel heavy on the skin and they soak right in to provide up to twenty four hours of broad-spectrum antioxidant protection without reapplication! We’re fans of CE Ferulic which provides a potent vitamin C (which has brightening benefits) in addition to power-house antioxidant ingredients like hydrating vitamin E and Ferulic acid.

Sunscreen. Everybody knows that sunscreen protection is the utmost important factor in keeping your skin healthy! Thank goodness for savvy chemists who know how to formulate sunscreen in uber-elegant recipes. SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 is one of the most sought after sunscreens. We have trouble keeping this stuff in stock in summer months. It’s a one of its kind physical sunscreen that’s a transparent, mattifying liquid that is paraben-free and offers true broad spectrum coverage from UVA and UVB rays, it’s great for all skin types and ages and stays put without feeling heavy or greasy, and it doesn’t have an unpleasant sunscreen smell! And while SkinCeuticals has created an amazing formula for the face, La Roche Posay (another renowned SPF pioneer) has created La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 Melt In Sunscreen Milk which is great for the body. This fast absorbing, non-greasy milk provides SPF 60 and broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with the breakthrough Cell-Ox Shield, to protect your skin, even at the cellular level.

Don’t neglect your hair. You have face and body covered! But that leaves out your luscious locks. Keep your hair looking its best with protective hair products. Since the sun can be dehydrating to your skin, it can also be super dehydrating to your hair too (straw hair = yuck!), use a protective leave-in spray that has a UV filter. We enjoy Rene Furterer Protective Summer Oil because it not only has a potent UV filter, but it also nourishes with sesame and castor oils and isolates hair from the direct aggression caused by exposure, sea or pool water.

Fake it. You’re probably thinking that all of this SPF protection will not allow for you to get any color! So cheat the sun and the sun damage, and instead of baking it…get good at faking it! There are hundreds of self tanners that’ll give you a beautiful golden glow! TanTowel Plus Full Body Self Tanning Towelettes are a great way to getting tan, they’re odorless and SO easy to use! This tan is easy to apply and because the self-tanning liquid is in a handy towel it’s virtually mess free! PLUS NO streaking! We promise!

Hydrate. What about dry skin? In the summertime our skin is frequently exposed to sun, sand, salty ocean water or chlorine from the pool. We tend to hydrate more frequently and diligently in the other seasons when it’s colder or dryer out, but our summer skin needs moisture too, and very much so after excess exposure to the elements. Rehydrate your skin with Kate Somerville 360 Tan Maximizer. Stay gorgeous, golden, and glowing with this unique formula that conditions and moisturizes skin for a longer lasting tan. A specialized peptide and lipid complex hydrates skin to help maintain a sun-kissed look after using self-tanning products or sun exposure. Black Snakeroot conditions, moisturizes, and soothes skin for after-sun recovery that prevents peeling and dryness.

To ward off dehydration on the go, it’s great to throw a refreshing spray into your beach tote. Kerstin Florian Aromatherapy Neroli Water is a delight to use because it’s soothing, hydrating and refreshing and can be used all of the body, or on the face… and it won’t disturb make-up!

Conceal. A blemish here, a sun spot there, dark circles from lack of sleep (there are too many fun things to do in the summer)… what’s a gal to do to stay looking fresh and feeling fabulous? Concealer is the magic wand of a make-up maven. This summer we’re in love with Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer because of its highly pigmented formula that’s also water resistant. It erases dark circles, blemishes, broken capillaries, sun damage and redness with only using a tiny amount of product (and we mean TINY!) a little tube will last and last and last.

Nail Time. Every girl knows that a perfect pedicure is a summer MUST. Coral always looks hot on the fingernails and is absolutely amazing for toes in the sweet summer time (bonus: corals and yellows visually intensify your tan). Butter London 3 Free Nail Lacquer-Macbeth is a gorgeous coral orange crème that looks fantastic when paired with strappy golden sandals! Plus Butter London’s does not add formaldehyde, toluene, or DBP to any of its nail formulas. It’s color without compromise.

Poet William Carlos Williams has said “In summer, the song sings itself”, and boy wasn’t he right! Enjoy the gorgeous weather, throw some hot dogs on the grill, read a great book, and lather on the SPF! Now that you’ve got a list of our TOP 10 summer favorites it’s easy to choose great summer products! What are your top picks?

You can find these and many other amazing products to get you summer ready at SkinStore.com!
