Camping (Beauty) Survival Tips

Published on by

It’s sunny out and with the weather change into summer, camping season is here! Grab your fishing poles, tents and camp kits before you hop onto the road. It can be rugged out there in the wilderness and I have some tips to help you stay feeling pretty and comfortable during your trip to the great outdoors!

Instead of bringing your usual makeup bag filled with goodies, empty it out and make room for the essentials. I’m not sure about everyone else but for me the first word that comes to mind when thinking of camping is dirt. We all know camping is usually less convenient then we like but all you need is an extra hand. Baby wipes come in very handy for the body and for other supplies which need cleansing. Luckily there are also wipes created especially for the face. I suggest either the Korres Pomegranate Cleansing & DeMake Up Wipes or Skyn ICELAND Glacial Cleansing Cloths. I designated these two items as the trip savior. Even the guys are impressed how these come in handy outdoors!

Coming in close to the camping saviors, is your multi purpose products. Do not! I repeat, DO NOT forget to pack either your moisturizer with SPF or your SPF facial powder. Everyone is different, so there are quite a bit of options under this product category. An easy to pack little option is Colorescience Sunforgettable SPF 30 Brush options. They come either translucent or with a little color to warm up the complexion. If you like your cream/ lotion products, you can throw in products like Kinerase Daily Defense Lotion SPF 30 or for a more radiant option, Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15. It’s very important to keep your skin hydrated and protected, especially outdoors.

Next into your bag is your oral care. These days there are many different oral products for you to grab, throw in some Supersmile Single Dose Powdered Mouthrinse  into your bag or try Supersmile Quikee. It is a pocket sized tube to use on the run. You use a drop, smear it over your teeth/ gums with your tongue and it provides tooth whitening, fresh breath and plaque combating protection. Cool, huh?!

We cannot forget about our beautiful tresses. I suggest you wash your hair before you go to prolong having to cleanse it. You can however include in your little survival pack some dry shampoo. I LOVE dry shampoo. It works wonders and I use it even at home for regular routine. Dry shampoos come in aerosol or powder options and work wonders. They will help to absorb the excess oils in your hair, while also providing volume and freshness. My new favorite is Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Dry Shampoo!

This concludes my checklist for a happy and well-prepared trip into the woods. Hope you take it from me and leave prepared! Oh and P.S. for tips on insect repellants, take a look at a fellow blogger’s post titled, “Win the Battle Against Mosquitoes.”

California Girl

Published on by

Katy Perry’s recent pop hit “California Gurls” has revitalized the term California Girl.

“I know a place where the grass is really greener
Warm, wet and wild, there must be something in the water…
You could travel the world
But nothing comes close to the golden coast…
California girls, we’re unforgettable”

If you’re in search of that iconic look, we’ve gotcha covered! Colorescience mineral makeup offers a kit with a few of their best sellers to help you achieve that sun-kissed glow.

Wild to Mild SunReliable SPF 20 Primer is my latest product infatuation. I’ve told everyone about it! If you’ve searched for that perfect no makeup makeup, for those days you don’t feel like putting much on, this is it! It provides a hint of bronze, while imparting a more uniform smooth finish. Your skin looks even and radiant without a stitch of foundation. Love it, love it, love it!

If you desire a bit more coverage, simply dust on their infamous Pressed Mineral Compact in California Girl and your complexion is flawless. Their powder stands out above other mineral powders because it has triple the pigment of other mineral powders. Which translates to more coverage with less powder.

To finish off that bronzed babe look the kit includes Lip Candy Glaze in Suga Babe for a kissable pout and a handy dandy Loose Mineral Puff. It’s a self dispensing travel puff with built in bronzer so you can glow on the go.

Now, every girl can be a California Girl!

Kit Includes:

Wild to Mild SunReliable SPF 20 Primer, 0.68oz
Called Wild to Mild, this was created as an after-sun product, to calm down burned skin, and to take it from wild (burned) to mild (soothed).
Pressed Mineral Compact – California Girl, 0.42oz
Unlike traditional pressed powders which are usually translucent and used as a finishing powder, Colorescience’s very concentrated pressed mineral pigment gives more coverage than any other formula!
• Loose Mineral Travel Puff – Kissed by the Sun, 0.52oz
A bronzer that is packaged in a self dispensing travel puff that allows you to glow on the go.
• Lip Candy Glaze – Suga Babe, 0.20oz
A long-lasting, non-sticky lip gloss with the natural flavors of Quadruple Chocolate Extract and mint. Sheer and lightweight, Lip Candy Glaze won’t leave your lips dehydrated or tacky.

I’m sure! Everyone would love to have this type of a product in their daily regimen. Boy! Do I have good news for you!

Meet ColoreScience Let Me Be Clear Primer. This formula contains 1% salicylic acid that will work to correct the appearance of blemishes and clogged pores. It will also smooth the skin’s texture and improve skin tone. It works as a great base for foundation, or can be used alone for a flawless finish. It’s great for men too because it’s undetectable on the skin. Let Me Be Clear Primer is infused with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to provide natural sunscreen protection. It also contains anti-inflammatory essential oils to reduce redness and swelling associated with acne and even rosacea.

Give this a try- and if you love it, you’ll love the powder too! Colorescience Let Me Be Clear Brush comes in three different shades to choose from; Fair Play, Middle Ground, and Deep Cover to suit all skin types. Just like the primer it contains salicylic acid, and has added rice starch to mattify the skin, so it’s great for keeping the skin looking matte and fresh all day long.

Heat Wave Survival – For Pets!

Published on by

A friend and I recently brought our Basset Hounds to a 4th of July parade where a local Basset rescue participates every year in the parade. There were over 100 of the short, floppy eared irresistible pooches. Some on leashes, some on floats, some on wagons… some even sporting costumes! It was a howl to see that many hounds waddle down the street!

The weather however turned out to be much warmer than anticipated. Instead of the usual coastal 70’s with a cool breeze, we were hit with 90 plus degree weather! Halfway down the parade route most of our dogs flopped down in the middle of the road in a shaded grove. Needless to say the parade stopped for about 10 minutes!

As I’m sure you’ve all read in our many postings about taking care of your skin and protecting yourself from sun exposure and heat; our pets, namely dogs and cats, don’t have the capability to cool off by sweating. If you take your pet out for a family event make sure you bring food and water. Bring an umbrella or choose a shaded area. When dogs and cats need to cool off they pant. The hotter they get the faster they pant. Providing shade and cool water for them to drink can help alleviate the stress and danger of overheating.

Of course NEVER leave your pet unattended inside a parked car during summer heat. Cars can quickly turn into saunas. Even in mild weather a car with it’s windows up, or even slightly cracked can heat well above 90 degrees or more and your pet can get heat exhaustion, heat stroke or worse within minutes!

During our summer heat waves make sure you and your pet drink plenty of water. Limit your sun exposure. A dip in the pool, fountains, or sprinklers will all help to release some of that body heat. If you decide to let your dog swim with you keep in mind not all dogs do well in water. Never leave your dog unattended near a pool, pond or lake. Remember to put your sunscreen on at least 30 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every 90 minutes. Dogs with lighter colored coats or pale pink skin need sun protection too! Noses, bellies and inside the ears are particularly vulnerable. Contact your local veterinarian or pet store for suggestions on what types of sunscreens are safe for your pet.

Top 10 Summer Must Haves

Published on by

Summer of 2010 is in full swing and we hope you’re enjoying it to its fullest! Whether you’re playing on a sandy beach in Mexico, lounging by the pool in Las Vegas, or hiking the Himalayas in India you’re probably well equipped with a goody bag full of your favorite skin care products (you are, a SkinStore customer after all!) We always want to know what you’re toting around to keep your skin looking wonderful through the seasons- and we’re sure that you’re curious to see what our top favorites are, so we’ve compiled a list of THE top 10 must haves for this fabulous summer!

Clarisonic. ‘Nuff said! This is our number one seller, and for a good reason! The Clarisonic comes in three versions- Mia for travel, Classic for facial cleansing and exfoliation and Plus for facial exfoliation and cleansing as well as body use (perfect pedicure, anyone?). Clarisonic uses a sonic technology to cleanse deeply within the pores and is two times more effective than manual cleansing and six times more effective at removing make-up! Therefore with daily use of the Clarisonic you’ll prevent breakouts and clogged pores, and the exfoliating factor will make large pores appear smaller, and the texture of the skin much smoother! It’s great for all skin types and all ages. Staff favorite, customer favorite… we can’t say enough great things about this product!

Antioxidants. Chances are, you’re spending a lot of time outdoors during the summer chasing after kids, swimming, playing outdoor sports and barbequing… while you may be religiously applying sunscreen to protect your skin, you may not be applying antioxidants which ward off free radicals that cause lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Antioxidant serums are a great way to go, because they’re light in consistency so they won’t feel heavy on the skin and they soak right in to provide up to twenty four hours of broad-spectrum antioxidant protection without reapplication! We’re fans of CE Ferulic which provides a potent vitamin C (which has brightening benefits) in addition to power-house antioxidant ingredients like hydrating vitamin E and Ferulic acid.

Sunscreen. Everybody knows that sunscreen protection is the utmost important factor in keeping your skin healthy! Thank goodness for savvy chemists who know how to formulate sunscreen in uber-elegant recipes. Since it hit the market in May, SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 has been selling like hotcakes! We have trouble keeping this stuff in stock. It’s a one of its kind physical sunscreen that’s a transparent, mattifying liquid that is paraben-free and offers true broad spectrum coverage from UVA and UVB rays, it’s great for all skin types and ages and stays put without feeling heavy or greasy, and it doesn’t have an unpleasant sunscreen smell! And while SkinCeuticals has created an amazing formula for the face, La Roche Posay (another renowned SPF pioneer) has created La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 Melt In Sunscreen Milk which is great for the body. This fast absorbing, non-greasy milk provides SPF 60 and broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with the breakthrough Cell-Ox Shield, to protect your skin, even at the cellular level.

Don’t neglect your hair. You have face and body covered! But that leaves out your luscious locks. Keep your hair looking its best with protective hair products. Since the sun can be dehydrating to your skin, it can also be super dehydrating to your hair too (straw hair = yuck!), use a leave-in conditioner that has a UV filter. We enjoy Rene Furterer Okara 2 Phase Leave-In Protective Conditioner CPF 80 because it not only has a potent UV filter but it also keeps the hair smooth, shiny and polished with its Okara complex.

Fake it. You’re probably thinking that all of this SPF protection will not allow for you to get any color! So cheat the sun and the sun damage, and instead of baking it…get good at faking it! There are hundreds of self tanners that’ll give you a beautiful golden glow! TanTowel Plus Full Body Self Tanning Towelettes are a great way to getting tan, they’re odorless and SO easy to use! This tan is easy to apply and because the self-tanning liquid is in a handy towel it’s virtually mess free! PLUS NO streaking! We promise!

Hydrate. What about dry skin? In the summertime our skin is frequently exposed to sun, sand, salty ocean water or chlorine from the pool. We tend to hydrate more frequently and diligently in the other seasons when it’s colder or dryer out, but our summer skin needs moisture too, and very much so after excess exposure to the elements. Rehydrate your skin with L’Occitane Cupuacu After-Sun Balm Lotion, it’s our summer favorite! This after sun lotion is formulated with organic vegetable butter of Cupuaçu, which is the ideal ingredient to intensely hydrate and regenerate skin after sun exposure because it holds four times its weight in water, therefore providing immense hydration without feeling greasy.

To ward off dehydration on the go, it’s great to throw a refreshing spray into your beach tote. Kerstin Florian Aromatherapy Neroli Water is a delight to use because it’s soothing, hydrating and refreshing and can be used all of the body, or on the face… and it won’t disturb make-up!

Conceal. A blemish here, a sun spot there, dark circles from lack of sleep (there are too many fun things to do in the summer)… what’s a gal to do to stay looking fresh and feeling fabulous? Concealer is the magic wand of a make-up maven. This summer we’re in love with Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer because of its highly pigmented formula that’s also water resistant. It erases dark circles, blemishes, broken capillaries, sun damage and redness with only using a tiny amount of product (and we mean TINY!) a little tube will last and last and last.

Nail Time. Every girl knows that a perfect pedicure is a summer MUST. Coral always looks hot on the fingernails and is absolutely amazing for toes in the sweet summer time (bonus: corals and yellows visually intensify your tan). SpaRitual Nail Lacquer in Love and Happiness is a gorgeous coral orange crème that looks fantastic when paired with strappy golden sandals!

Poet William Carlos Williams has said “In summer, the song sings itself”, and boy wasn’t he right! Enjoy this gorgeous weather, throw some hot dogs on the grill, read a great book, and lather on the SPF! Now that you’ve got a list of our TOP 10 summer favorites it’s easy to choose great summer products! What are your top picks?

Pool Party Prep

Published on by

BBQ’s and pool parties come hand in hand during these summer months. While men don’t even flinch about summer time, women tend to go into detox mode. All we need is a little bit of preparation tips & tricks to get the ball rolling and come prepared when that pool party arrives. So instead of biting your finger nails and becoming a detox princess, follow these guidelines…

After you’ve marked your special date on your calendar, the preparation can begin. You know you will be in a bikini soon, so what immediately comes to mind? Maybe we need a little bit of color, or spot treatments to concern areas? With the few weeks leading up to the event, we can exfoliate our body  just like our faces a few times a week. This will get rid of all of the dead skin on the surface so that when we are ready to reveal our skin it will look healthy and smooth. In between exfoliation sessions, don’t forget about shaving. I know I am probably not the only one who likes to borrow good men’s shaving products. Grab some Jack Black Supreme Cream Triple Cushion Shave Lather. I say if it’s strong and comfortable enough for a man, then it would be bliss for a woman. After you shave, don’t forget to prevent and protect your freshly shaved areas with some ingrown hair/ bump fighters! For a suggestion, try Whish Flawless Bump Fighter.

The next prep step would be to pick out and apply a self tanner. We want to look golden and sun kissed at our events but without harm from the sun! We suggest that you take a look at the following self tan products:

They are all different options for different types of needs. They range from creams, to lotion/milk textures and even gel textures. These will get you glowing quickly and what a way to help slim up your figure too! Now that you are pretty much ready to flaunt your pool party body and smile, there are a few other items you should remember to stay flawless. Be sure you remember to always wear your preferred SPF products for the face and the body! If you need, there are always some relaxing and soothing after sun products as well. Click here for more info on after sun care.

You can also protect your hair during these weekend water & sun celebrations with products like:

Well I think we’ve pretty much covered as much as possible on how to prepare from head to toe. You should feel tan, toned, smooth and fit to stun when you arrive at your summer soiree. Oh, and don’t forget those designer shades!

5 Steps to Glowing Skin

Published on by

It’s no secret that glowing skin resonates with youth and good health. Here are the cardinal rules that you can follow to ensure pretty, radiant skin.

  • Diet: A healthy diet provides for healthy skin. To ensure that your complexion glows eat lots of vegetables, berries, fruits, healthy grains, calcium-rich foods like milk, yogurt and buttermilk. Incorporate healthy proteins like chicken and tofu, and omega-rich foods like fish and nuts. Eating healthily will not only make you feel better and healthier, it’ll also contribute to pretty, fresh, youthful and glowing skin!
  • Antioxidants: it’s a buzz word for a good reason. Antioxidants ward off aging (and many health problems) by protecting our cells from free radicals and oxidative stress. While a diet rich in antioxidants will contribute to healthy skin from the inside out, antioxidant-rich topical treatments that we apply to our skin will also help to ward off oxidative stress externally, resulting in a bright and even complexion. Topical antioxidant treatments come in many forms; serums, gels, lotions, creams, even built into cleansers and sunscreen products that we use… so there’s no excuse to not use an antioxidant product!
  • Sunscreen: Everyone should wear a sunscreen daily, even when it’s overcast the sun’s harmful rays penetrate through the clouds and can seriously damage our skin. Sun damaged skin is dull, lackluster and drab. It can also develop sun spots and excess freckles, resulting in an unsightly and uneven coloration. Skin cancer is caused by sun damage and can be prevented through regular use of sunscreen. There are many available sunscreen formulations on the market, so everyone will have their favorite (& no excuse to forgo one)!
  • Exfoliation: Just as everyone should wear a sunscreen, everyone should also exfoliate. Exfoliation is key to smooth, radiant skin. Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells (which make the skin look lifeless and dull) and it helps to even the skin tone, so if you have existing sun damage or hyperpigmentation, exfoliating regularly can help to lessen the appearance of bothersome spots. Manual exfoliants have small granules to remove dead skin cells- look for products that contain jojoba beads, which are rounded particles that effectively scrub the skin. If you prefer a chemical exfoliant an alpha hydroxyl acid will do the trick; look for products that contain glycolic, lactic, citric, malic or mandelic acid. If you prefer a very gentle exfoliant, try enzymes which eat dead skin cells without disturbing the healthy skin barrier.
  • Hydration: Hydrated skin is plump and dewy, so everyone must use a moisturizer (even the oiliest skin types need to hydrate with a light, oil-free moisturizer). A moisturizer will lock hydration into the skin so treatment products can work more effectively- and a moisturizer will ward off premature aging too!

Remember that you can fake a little bit of a glow too- use illuminating products that boost the skin’s radiance, here are some of our favorites:

Philosophy Divine Illumination; what makes this anti-aging moisturizer especially unique are light diffusers and natural skin enhancers that help give skin luminosity for a healthy glow.

Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15; Skin instantly looks softer and younger with this handy multi-tasker. It delivers a hint of sheer coverage, subtle shimmer, SPF 15 and added moisture in one effortless application.?

Melanoma – Know the facts, before it’s too late…

Published on by

The largest organ in the human body, our skin, is often overlooked. Our skin is on the front lines day after day, waging war against climate, environmental pollutants and damaging UV rays. Skin is not only a precursor to our inner health, but also a timeline of our life. Every scar, freckle, and birth mark tells a tale.

Our skin serves many purposes. It shields organs inside the body protecting them from injury, keeps invading germs out, retains water and other fluids and aides in regulating body temperature. The skin is made up of three layers; the epidermis, dermis, and subcutis. Within the epidermis are melanocytes, which are the cells that produce pigment, called melanin. Melanin is what makes skin brown or tan, protecting deeper layers of skin from harmful UV rays. Melanocyctes are the cells that can become melanoma.

Melanoma is a cancer that begins in the melanocytes. Melanoma tumors are most often brown or black in color. However, in rare cases melanomas can have no color at all. A common misconception is that people with darker skin tones cannot develop skin cancer. Having dark skin may lower the risk of melanoma, but this does not mean that a person with dark skin can not get melanoma.

It is crucial to remember that if caught in the early stages, melanoma can be cured. But, if not caught early it is likely to spread to other parts of the body. Melanoma occurs less frequently than other forms of skin cancer, but is far more serious.

Risk Factors:

UV light exposure is the leading risk factor for most melanomas. Sunlight, tanning lamps and tanning beds all greatly increase your risk of developing melanoma. Studies have also linked melanoma in stomach, legs, and arms to frequent sunburns (especially in childhood).

People with fair skin are at risk for melanoma 10 times more than other people. Fair skinned individuals with freckles, red, or blond hair also have a higher risk of melanoma. People with red hair have the highest risk of melanoma.

A family history of melanoma is also a contributing risk factor. 10% of people with melanoma have an immediate family member with the disease.

Melanoma is most often found in older people, however it is one of the rare cancers that are also found in younger people.

Possible Signs of Melanoma:

The ABCD rule will help you detect abnormal moles that should be checked by your doctor.

Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other half.

Border irregularity: The edges of the mole are irregular or not smooth (ragged, blurred, or notched)

Color: The color of the mole is not uniform. There may be shades of pink, red, white, or blue.

Diameter: The mole is larger than ¼ inch (about the size of a pencil eraser)

Easy Prevention Tips:

  • Limit UV exposure (natural sunlight and tanning beds)
  • Protect your skin with clothing or a hat
  • Use Sunscreen
  • Wear Sunglasses
  • Stay in the Shade
  • Check for abnormal moles
  • Schedule routine skin cancer exams by your doctor

Why We Love Cover FX

Published on by

From the ingenious minds of leading cosmetic and skincare specialists, Cover FX was born. Conceived with the intention of becoming the foundation authority, Lee Graff, the co-creator and President of Cover FX developed a makeup that effectively camouflages major skin imperfections with added therapeutic benefits.

Graff has been a corrective makeup specialist for over 20 years at a leading Canadian CosMedic Clinic, working exclusively with rosacea, acne, scars, and vitiligo patients. Cover FX was created to match a variety of skin tones, be tolerated by even the most sensitive skin, affordable to the everyday consumer, and have a beautiful naturally looking finish.

As the foundation authority, Cover FX is dedicated to achieving a flawless makeup application from beginning to end. If you’re new to the line, we suggest trying The Big Cover Up kit, their 3 step essentials to seamless foundation. The 7 piece kit includes Skin Prep FX Nourishing Foundation Primer and Anti-Aging Serum, Cover FX Total Coverage Cream Foundation (3 shades), Setting FX Translucent Setting Powder, Foundation Brush, and an instructional DVD.

Makeup experts agree that every foundation application should start with a great primer. Skin Prep FX Nourishing Foundation Primer and Anti-Aging Serum is a smoothing, hydrating foundation primer that reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and large pores. It is enriched with peptides, vitamins, and hyaluronic acid to help combat the signs of aging.

One of the biggest dilemmas we face with foundation is finding the perfect color. Whose skin really matches a pre-made color straight from the bottle? It’s either too light or too dark or the wrong tone. Or when you’ve finally found the perfect shade, it’s soon to be discontinued entirely. Cover FX addresses this issue, The Big Cover Up kit includes 3 coordinating shades to blend together for the perfect match.

Cover FX Total Coverage Cream Foundation is a 2-in-1 concealer and foundation. It provides full coverage for hard to conceal imperfections like sun damage, acne, and redness. The foundation is suitable for all skin types and imparts a natural dewy finish. It’s also non-comedogenic and has a zero skin irritancy score for skin sensitivity.

The finishing touch of the 3 step essentials is Cover FX Loose Mineral Setting Powder. To set your makeup, simply dust on a touch of translucent setting powder. This imparts a flawless finish with light defusing pigments. Your skin will appear smoother and more radiant. It also helps to prevent color and foundation transfer. A setting powder extends the wear of your makeup and locks makeup in place all day.

If you’ve struggled to find the perfect foundation for years to no avail, your search is over! Cover FX will give you the confidence of a beautiful even complexion.
