Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare All In One Tinted Moisturizer

Published on by

Renowned dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross has an excellent product called All In One Tinted Moisturizer, which is designed to moisturize and protect your skin with an SPF 15. It also evens out your skin tone with a tint, while it provides antioxidant protection with vitamins E and C, and promotes firming and smoothing.

During a recent training I had the pleasure of trying this product. I was amazed how smooth the product was, how quickly it absorbed and how evenly it spread.

Who would be the person to enjoy this product? I would recommend this product to anyone (men and women) who want to moisturize, even out skin tone, and protect their skin from UVA & UVB damage.

Hope in a Tube

Feeling a little down? You know that you can always count on Philosophy’s products and their quirky names and slogans to lift your spirits. My personal favorites from Philosophy’s broad product range are the Amazing Grace items. “In the end, it comes down to one word. Grace.” is the philosophy behind this best-selling range of fragranced goodies. I find that this statement rings true to many situations in our lives. We can relate to the philosophy of Philosophy, and that’s why we all really love the brand.

So what’s Philosophy’s next best and most-loved thing? The new Hope in a Tinted Moisturizer! A sheer, luscious tinted moisturizer that’s packed with antioxidants and SPF 20 to provide your skin with breathable coverage and a gorgeous glow that resonates with health and well-being. There are eight shades to choose from, so whether you’re very fair or very dark there’s a suitable color for your skin tone.

I especially love the Hope in a Tinted Moisturizer paired with Philosophy the Color of Grace Amazing Grace Shimmering Face Powder, a shimmering pale-pink powder that gives my skin a youthful lit-from-within glow. It’s perfect on the highpoints of the face like the cheekbones, chin, and bridge of the nose. It’s also very pretty on the décolleté and shoulders. What better way to feel uber-feminine than with a luscious fragrance, a bit of makeup, and a fun inspiring philosophy behind it.

Wrinkles 101

Published on by

Let’s talk wrinkles. We all have some type of wrinkle on our skin, but do we know what causes wrinkles, the different types, and most importantly how to diminish the appearance of them? According to the Fitzpatrick scale there are 3 classes of wrinkles: superficial wrinkles, fine-to-moderately deep wrinkles, and fine-to-deep wrinkles. The severity of the wrinkle will determine which treatment option is appropriate for you.

Mark Twain once said “Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been”. In that case we should all be delighted about our wrinkles right? We have earned our laugh lines, battle scars, and wisdom; but now I think we deserve a break for all of our hard work!

There is hope for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, sometimes just by minimally using effective products and/or procedures. You will want to look for products that contain active ingredients to resurface your skin while boosting collagen and elastin. You can start by using a mild exfoliant such as glycolic acid and a topical retinol such as the Skinceuticals Retinol. Ther’es a a .5% for sensitive skin and a 1% for more tolerant or problematic skin. This will help the appearance of uneven skin tone; improve wrinkles and texture while encouraging collagen production.

If your wrinkles are beyond laugh lines and are not as superficial as they were in your 20’s and 30’s you may want to look into alternative treatments to use in conjunction with your anti aging products. Procedures include microdermabrasion, IPL photofacials, injectables, or skin laser resurfacing. You will want to consult your dermatologist for your best treatment options available for your specific concerns.

The key to your success for fighting the signs of aging is prevention. You should limit your sun exposure at all times, and make sure you are always wearing a sunscreen with an SPF30 or higher. You will want to look for a sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection. UVA rays are the main culprits for premature aging on the skin because they penetrate more deeply, so make sure you are choosing a broad spectrum sunscreen. A good sunscreen to try is the La Roche Posay Anthelios 40 Sunscreen. Wearing a daily sunscreen will help to prevent breakdown on your skin while promoting a healthy glow. Aside from the sun, watch out for the other no no’s such as smoking, poor nutrition, and not hydrating your skin properly.

We are all going to age eventually, but we don’t necessarily need to look our age… right?

Skin Care in Your Fab 30’s

Published on by

Entering our 30’s we hear that these are the best times of our lives. We are given the opportunity to have careers, babies, or travel the world. But what does this mean for our skin, and how do we know if we are making the right choices for our new age and concerns?

Most of us have been warned about the dangers of the sun because our parents told us to wear sunscreen and not use foil and baby oil, so we are hoping to look better than our mothers and fathers. The question is how do we keep looking young? Advancements in skin care have come a long way in just the past 5-10 years, and all these tricks and potions are at our fingertips just waiting to be explored. To make it easy, here are the top things you need for your 30’s when it comes to your skin.

1. Wear your sunscreen: Yes we know this, but let’s really practice what we preach ladies and gentlemen.  Skin cancer is the leading type of cancer right now, and we can help prevent it by just covering up and wearing a sunscreen. An SPF of at least a 30 is suggested. Due to variations in formulations there are sunscreens that are oil free, hydrating, and even great for you sensitive skin types. There are no exceptions on this one, wear your sunscreen please! We like La Roche Posay sunscreens and so do our customers.

2. Take your vitamins:  They don’t look like cartoon characters at this age, but they can make us look and feel young well into our 40’s and beyond. Vitamins A, C, E are essential for healthy skin, strong immune systems, and overall wellness. Also, please wear your vitamins. Get a great antioxidant serum, this will protect your skin against further damage and help to correct unsightly sun damage. Retin-A is said to be one of the most powerful products in helping to promote collagen production and cell turnover. This is essential because collagen levels have already started to deplete by the age of 30.

3. Use an eye cream: At the age of 30 we start seeing the first signs of aging right before our very eyes, or under our eyes I should say. Those beautiful browns or beaming blues and greens can continue to remain as the center of attention with a little help from a great eye cream. A serum formulation for day will help tighten and provide that wide awake look. A slightly more hydrating cream formula for use in the PM, will help hydrate and regenerate the delicate tissue under the eye. A great eye cream for that is the Arcona Eye Wrinkle Repair.

4. Try alpha hydroxy acids: AHA’s are very anti-aging because they help to smooth lines, even out skin tone, and give your skin a nice healthy glow. AHA’s will also help to promote cell turnover by exfoliating your skin and should be incorporated into your weekly regimen. SkinCeuticals C+AHA is an excellent choice because it provides 15% L-Ascorbic Acid and 10% alpha hydroxyl acid. Antioxidants and exfoliation all in one product make this a great multi tasking necessity.

5. Tools for success: These include the Clarisonic, Baby Quasar, Nuface or the Wellbox device. Tools will help boost the benefits of any skin care regimen you are currently using. They will help to exfoliate, repair, tighten, and rejuvenate the skin. They save time and money because you can treat your skin in the privacy of your home for a fraction of the cost when compared to the doctor’s office or medispa.

The most important thing to remember is to do your research, but don’t believe everything you read. Be educated about what to expect, but don’t make your self crazy. A lot of consumers tend to overdo it and can cause damage to their skin. The trick is balance, education, and prevention.

Melanoma – Know the facts, before it’s too late…

Published on by

MelanomaThe largest organ in the human body, our skin, is often overlooked. Our skin is on the front lines day after day, waging war against climate, environmental pollutants and damaging UV rays. Skin is not only a precursor to our inner health, but also a timeline of our life. Every scar, freckle, and birth mark tells a tale.

Our skin serves many purposes. It shields organs inside the body protecting them from injury, keeps invading germs out, retains water and other fluids and aides in regulating body temperature. The skin is made up of three layers; the epidermis, dermis, and subcutis. Within the epidermis are melanocytes, which are the cells that produce pigment, called melanin. Melanin is what makes skin brown or tan, protecting deeper layers of skin from harmful UV rays. Melanocyctes are the cells that can become melanoma.

Melanoma is a cancer that begins in the melanocytes. Melanoma tumors are most often brown or black in color. However, in rare cases melanomas can have no color at all. A common misconception is that people with darker skin tones cannot develop skin cancer. Having dark skin may lower the risk of melanoma, but this does not mean that a person with dark skin can not get melanoma.

It is crucial to remember that if caught in the early stages, melanoma can be cured. But, if not caught early it is likely to spread to other parts of the body. Melanoma occurs less frequently than other forms of skin cancer, but is far more serious.

Risk Factors:

UV light exposure is the leading risk factor for most melanomas. Sunlight, tanning lamps and tanning beds all greatly increase your risk of developing melanoma. Studies have also linked melanoma in stomach, legs, and arms to frequent sunburns (especially in childhood).

People with fair skin are at risk for melanoma 10 times more than other people. Fair skinned individuals with freckles, red, or blond hair also have a higher risk of melanoma. People with red hair have the highest risk of melanoma.

A family history of melanoma is also a contributing risk factor. 10% of people with melanoma have an immediate family member with the disease.

Melanoma is most often found in older people, however it is one of the rare cancers that are also found in younger people.

Possible Signs of Melanoma:

The ABCD rule will help you detect abnormal moles that should be checked by your doctor.

Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other half.

Border irregularity: The edges of the mole are irregular or not smooth (ragged, blurred, or notched)

Color: The color of the mole is not uniform. There may be shades of pink, red, white, or blue.

Diameter: The mole is larger than ¼ inch (about the size of a pencil eraser)

Easy Prevention Tips:

  • Limit UV exposure (natural sunlight and tanning beds)
  • Protect your skin with clothing or a hat
  • Use Sunscreen
  • Wear Sunglasses
  • Stay in the Shade
  • Check for abnormal moles
  • Schedule routine skin cancer exams by your doctor

Beach Favorites for 2010

Published on by

Don’t be a hot mess this year. Leave the greasy products at home and try our tried and true beach favorites that’ll keep you looking and feeling oh-so-sexy, not ugh-so-sweaty.

SPF (duh!) Even if you’re dark, or don’t burn, you still need to use a broad spectrum sunscreen to shield from the sun’s harmful rays. We love the new La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF 45 Ultra Light Sunscreen. It soaks right in and leaves a matte finish so you don’t look greasy, and best of all don’t feel sticky!

Cream eyeshadow stays put through sweating, swimming, and frolicking on the beach. We’re loving Illuminare All Day Eye Color in Cafe Americano.

Waterproof eyeliner is a must to withstand the sweat, sun, salt and sand. Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Carbon Black is lovely.

Waterproof mascara is another beach staple to keep your luscious lashes looking fabulous. We’re digging bareMinerals Flawless Defintion Waterproof Mascara, it separates every lash and creates a natural look that’s perfect for a day at the beach! Now you can swim, sweat and laugh until you cry.

Body bronzer is a must have if you’d like to look sun-kissed without being sun-damaged. NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Golden Shimmer Multi-Usage Dry Oil Splash gives baby-oil sheen without the slick, and the golden particles make you glisten like a goddess. Layer over sunscreen for a gorgeous glimmery finish.

If you’re wearing lip gloss on the beach, sand is guaranteed to stick and who wants that sort of muddle? If you want pink, kissable lips without the mess then stick to lip stains. Stila Yumberry Crush is a pretty pink that’s fresh and fun. Always remember to protect your pucker with SPF too! We like MD Formulations Lip Balm because it’s not sticky, but is really hydrating.

If you love your tresses (and treasure that money well-spent in a salon) then you must protect your hair with sun protection too! The sun is not only drying and damaging to the skin but it can wreak havoc on your hair. Parched hair is gross… therefore douse with Alterna Summer Hair RX Spray Shine, it will make your hair shiny and will shield it from those sun rays!

And now you’re ready to put your best Baywatch babe foot forward!

Camping (Beauty) Survival Tips

Published on by

It’s sunny out and with the weather change into summer, camping season is here! Grab your fishing poles, tents and camp kits before you hop onto the road. It can be rugged out there in the wilderness and I have some tips to help you stay feeling pretty and comfortable during your trip to the great outdoors!

Instead of bringing your usual makeup bag filled with goodies, empty it out and make room for the essentials. I’m not sure about everyone else but for me the first word that comes to mind when thinking of camping is dirt. We all know camping is usually less convenient then we like but all you need is an extra hand. Baby wipes come in very handy for the body and for other supplies which need cleansing. Luckily there are also wipes created especially for the face. I suggest either the Korres Pomegranate Cleansing & DeMake Up Wipes or Skyn ICELAND Glacial Cleansing Cloths. I designated these two items as the trip savior. Even the guys are impressed how these come in handy outdoors!

Coming in close to the camping saviors, is your multi purpose products. Do not! I repeat, DO NOT forget to pack either your moisturizer with SPF or your SPF facial powder. Everyone is different, so there are quite a bit of options under this product category. An easy to pack little option is Colorescience Sunforgettable SPF 30 Brush options. They come either translucent or with a little color to warm up the complexion. If you like your cream/ lotion products, you can throw in products like Kinerase Daily Defense Lotion SPF 30 or for a more radiant option, Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15. It’s very important to keep your skin hydrated and protected, especially outdoors.

Next into your bag is your oral care. These days there are many different oral products for you to grab, throw in some Supersmile Single Dose Powdered Mouthrinse  into your bag or try Supersmile Quikee. It is a pocket sized tube to use on the run. You use a drop, smear it over your teeth/ gums with your tongue and it provides tooth whitening, fresh breath and plaque combating protection. Cool, huh?!

We cannot forget about our beautiful tresses. I suggest you wash your hair before you go to prolong having to cleanse it. You can however include in your little survival pack some dry shampoo. I LOVE dry shampoo. It works wonders and I use it even at home for regular routine. Dry shampoos come in aerosol or powder options and work wonders. They will help to absorb the excess oils in your hair, while also providing volume and freshness. My new favorite is Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Dry Shampoo!

This concludes my checklist for a happy and well-prepared trip into the woods. Hope you take it from me and leave prepared! Oh and P.S. for tips on insect repellants, take a look at a fellow blogger’s post titled, “Win the Battle Against Mosquitoes.”

California Girl

Published on by

Katy Perry’s recent pop hit “California Gurls” has revitalized the term California Girl.

“I know a place where the grass is really greener
Warm, wet and wild, there must be something in the water…
You could travel the world
But nothing comes close to the golden coast…
California girls, we’re unforgettable”

If you’re in search of that iconic look, we’ve gotcha covered! Colorescience mineral makeup offers a kit with a few of their best sellers to help you achieve that sun-kissed glow.

Wild to Mild SunReliable SPF 20 Primer is my latest product infatuation. I’ve told everyone about it! If you’ve searched for that perfect no makeup makeup, for those days you don’t feel like putting much on, this is it! It provides a hint of bronze, while imparting a more uniform smooth finish. Your skin looks even and radiant without a stitch of foundation. Love it, love it, love it!

If you desire a bit more coverage, simply dust on their infamous Pressed Mineral Compact in California Girl and your complexion is flawless. Their powder stands out above other mineral powders because it has triple the pigment of other mineral powders. Which translates to more coverage with less powder.

To finish off that bronzed babe look the kit includes Lip Candy Glaze in Suga Babe for a kissable pout and a handy dandy Loose Mineral Puff. It’s a self dispensing travel puff with built in bronzer so you can glow on the go.

Now, every girl can be a California Girl!

Kit Includes:

Wild to Mild SunReliable SPF 20 Primer, 0.68oz
Called Wild to Mild, this was created as an after-sun product, to calm down burned skin, and to take it from wild (burned) to mild (soothed).
Pressed Mineral Compact – California Girl, 0.42oz
Unlike traditional pressed powders which are usually translucent and used as a finishing powder, Colorescience’s very concentrated pressed mineral pigment gives more coverage than any other formula!
• Loose Mineral Travel Puff – Kissed by the Sun, 0.52oz
A bronzer that is packaged in a self dispensing travel puff that allows you to glow on the go.
• Lip Candy Glaze – Suga Babe, 0.20oz
A long-lasting, non-sticky lip gloss with the natural flavors of Quadruple Chocolate Extract and mint. Sheer and lightweight, Lip Candy Glaze won’t leave your lips dehydrated or tacky.
