Top Tinted Sunscreens

Published on by

We all know how important it is to protect your skin from harmful UVA\UVB rays. It is a necessary daily step whether you are going to be spending the day inside or outside, your skin needs to be protected. One of the biggest complaints we hear about sunscreens is that they leave a white cast on the skin or they are too heavy and greasy. The best advice we offer is to use a tinted or tone enhancing sunscreen that absorbs quickly. For those of you that do not like to wear a lot of make-up, they can also be used as a base to give your skin some color. Here are some of our favorites:

SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50: Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 provides high broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection with all natural physical filters, Zinc Oxide (Z-COTE) and Titanium Dioxide. Providing substantial power in an ultra-sheer, mattifying fluid, this sunscreen is infused with translucent color spheres to enhance natural skin tone. Tested on all ethnicities, this adaptable fluid provides discreet coverage while restoring radiance.

La Roche Posay Anthelios 50 Tinted Moisturizer: Anthelios 50 Mineral Tinted is a unique patent pending combination of a mineral sun filter with Cell-OX Shield™ antioxidant technology to provide advanced UVA/UVB protection. It also has universal tint technology to match most skin tones and provide an instant, natural glow.

Coola Face SPF 30 Mineral Matter Tint Unscented: Defend your skin from both the sun and environmental pollution with a chemical free, mineral matte shield. This unscented, lightly tinted formula delivers broad spectrum SPF 30 protection as it fights the damaging effects of free radicals. Antioxidant-infused Borage Seed Oil and Evening Primrose Extract will rejuvenate skin, targeting early signs of aging. Shea Butter hydrates and softens sun-exposed skin while restoring elasticity. Plankton, a naturally water-resistant phyto-protector boosts SPF protection, making this the perfect beach companion.

Perricone No Foundation Foundation: The first advanced anti-aging translucent foundation designed to allow the natural health and glow of skin to shine through, while providing non-chemical SPF 30 broad spectrum UV protection. Elegant in texture and quick absorbing, this product helps correct skin undertones, while boosting skin’s moisture level throughout the day. It’s infused with high potency active ingredients that provide anti-aging benefits and help firm skin’s appearance and diminish lines and wrinkles over time. It’s also formulated with specially treated pigments blended with light diffusing mica to instantly soften the look of lines, wrinkles and pores. Skin will look smooth and naturally radiant.

Summer Protectors: SPF and Topical Vitamins

Published on by

The summer months can take a toll on the skin. From sunny vacations to outdoor activities and the sun’s harsh rays beating down during your daily commute, sun protection is extra important during these warmer months. The summer season finds the sun the highest in the sky causing UVA/UVB rays to be stronger and more direct, especially during the 10 am – 4 pm hours.

Adding a broad spectrum sunscreen into your daily routine — no matter what time of day you are out — dramatically improves your level of protection. If the sun is out, a broad spectrum sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin. Broad spectrum sunscreens protect against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are responsible for premature aging, while UVB rays result in sunburn.

PCA SKIN® offers five broad spectrum sunscreens — Weightless Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 45, Perfecting Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 30, Protecting Hydrator Broad Spectrum SPF 30, Hydrator Plus Broad Spectrum SPF 30, Active Broad Spectrum SPF 45: Water Resistant — designed for different skin needs, but all approved by The Skin Cancer Foundation for active and daily use.

To supplement direct sun care, C&E Strength and C&E Strength Max offer maximum percentages of pure vitamins C and E to aid the skin’s ability to support itself against external damages while improving fine lines and wrinkles. The unique delivery system in these products allow for the vitamins to be safely encapsulated and provide maximum effectiveness.

Ultimately, one of the best things you can do for your skin is to avoid these harsh rays whenever possible. Rearranging your outdoor activities and chores to before or after the hottest point of the day and staying away from artificial tanning is the number one method of protection.

Sunscreen for the Scalp

Published on by

We have all been there. You spent the entire day out in the sun and are diligent in applying SPF only to discover that Quintessence Q-Sunshade Leave In Hair Conditioner and Scalp Protectant SPF 30you have a burnt scalp. I usually have a sunburn right down the part in my hair. Your scalp is fried to the point that showering and combing your hair has become a form of torture. A few days later your sunburned scalp starts peeling and you have little flakes of skin in your hair. Luckily, there has been an answer to our prayers. It is Quintessence Q-Sunshade Leave in Hair Conditioner and Scalp Protectant SPF 30. It is a broad spectrum SPF 30 that you just apply and leave in, so easy! Plus it helps protect color treated hair and condition, moisturize and nourish. I even use this on my little one; his hair is still baby fine and sparse. I tried using the spray sunscreen to protect his scalp, but it just sprayed onto his hair and not his scalp. With this leave in conditioner, I can rub it onto his scalp without him looking like a grease pit. It is a definite summer essential.

Is the SPF in your Makeup enough?

Published on by

As an esthetician we are constantly asking our clients if they are using an SPF. Proper sun protection is so important in skin care and it is the number 1 most important anti-aging product in your regimen. All too often I have women tell me that they have SPF in their makeup and therefore they believe that they do not need to apply a sunscreen. This is absolutely NOT true. While it is a great added bonus that your makeup contains SPF, it is not a substitution for applying a sunscreen. The truth is most people do not apply the layers of coverage they need from their makeup to get proper sun protection. Also, sunscreen needs to be applied every 2 hours when outdoors. Your face would be piled with makeup at the end of the day. An SPF 30 or higher should be part of your daily morning skin care regimen. You are welcome to apply your makeup over that for added benefit. Skinstore has a wide selection of sunscreens to offer for all skin types. One of our favorites is SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50.

Tanning Beds: EXPOSED

Published on by

Indoor tanning salons are just as popular as fast food restaurants in some cities. They promise the bronzed beauty that comes with a great tan. I am guilty of baking myself in tanning beds for years. I would listen to the teenage girl that worked at the tanning salon tell me how the UVA rays from the beds were safe and it was even smart to get a base tan in the summer to help protect my skin from the Sun. I knew better than to believe all this nonsense, but I just wanted to look tan. Now, I am older and wiser, but I have awful sun damage as a result of my poor tanning decisions. I no longer tan and am diligent about wearing proper SPF. I wish I knew all the harmful effects that I know now.

Here is some real and true information about tanning beds. UVA rays are not safe. In fact UVA rays penetrate deeper into your skin, cause melanoma and premature aging. A typical tanning bed emits about 95% UVA rays and about 5% UVB rays. The UVA rays from a tanning bed are 12 times stronger than what we are exposed to from the Sun. The reason for this is because UVA rays make the skin darker faster. They also cause sagging skin, skin cancer and eye damage, including ocular melanoma (eye cancer). This information was never mentioned while I was shelling out money for my tanning service. I wish I knew that just one tanning session increased my chances of getting melanoma by 20%. And each additional session within that year tacked on another 2% risk. Tanning beds have been moved to “carcinogenic to humans” category which is the highest risk category for cancer. Shockingly, there are more cases of cancer due to indoor tanning than cases of lung cancer due to smoking (study by JAMA dermatology). No, tan is worth the risk. There are plenty of great self-tanners available now that are a safe alternative to tanning. Your future, older self will thank you! A couple of our staff favorites are Kate Somerville360 Body Self Tanning Towelettes and Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Blow Pads.

Men Face Higher Skin Cancer Rate

Published on by

Sunscreen protection is vital for both men and women. Studies have proven skin cancer is more prevalent in men. Men get twice the overall number of skin cancers and three times more squamous cell carcinomas that women do according to Tatiana M. Oberyszyn, PhD, assistant professor of pathology at Ohio State University in Columbus. Why? Men are more likely than women to have outdoor jobs and they are less likely to protect their skin with sunscreen. In addition, men are less likely to perform self-exams and to go see the doctor. Is the application of a sunscreen a cosmetic issue or a health issue?

To test this theory, Oberyszyn’s team exposed a breed of hairless mice to ultraviolet rays from a sun lamp. The mice underwent eight- to 10-minute tanning sessions three times a week for six months. That was enough to give both male and female mice skin cancer. As a side note, this is an important finding as well: Really validating the negative impact of using tanning beds on a regular basis.

“We found males got skin tumors earlier, got more of them, and more of the tumors were severe,” states Oberyszyn. Tests of male and female mouse skin turned up a surprising finding. The male skin cells carried fewer antioxidants than the female skin cells. It turns out that male skin is more sensitive than female skin. Skin cancer is the cancer men are most likely to face.

In fact, men over 50 are more than twice as likely as women to develop and die from skin cancer. Men are also about twice as likely to develop basal and squamous cell skin cancers as well. And it’s not just men over 50 who are at risk: a recent study by the Mayo Clinic has found that the rates for squamous and basal cell carcinoma have jumped for men under 40.

Men typically have less hair to cover ears and scalp, two important areas where they develop skin cancer more often than women. Men also top women in skin cancers of the often-exposed back, chest, and shoulders. These are the areas that require self-examinations. It is time for men to step up and put sunscreen on!

Men must put an ample amount of sunscreen on, and reapply every 70 minutes when directly under the sun. Hats that have protection for the neck and ears should be used. The reality is that sun protection is a very serious health issue and should not be ignored.

We recommend Menscience TiO2 Sunblock SPF 30. It is packaged in an easy to use and carry tube to facilitate application. It combines advanced ingredients for the ultimate sunscreen; an ultralight, non-greasy waterproof and sweat proof formula that provides maximum protection (SPF30). While moisturizing, nurturing and helping to repair the damaging effects of the sun: For everyday use or for extreme environmental conditions. It is appropriate for all skin types.

Must Have Travel Products for Spring Break

Published on by

With Spring Break around the corner I am sure there are plenty of college students and families gearing up for a week off of school and a much deserved break from the day-to-day. Whether you are heading to the beach or a mini vacay the key to packing for a Spring Break trip is to pack light. Bathing suit, sandals and just the beauty basics are all you need for a care-free week off from life. I have provided some super simple ways to lighten the load for your trip.

First Aid Beauty Gentle Cleansing Wipes are a natural, quick and easy way to wipe down after a day in the sun to cleanse the skin. They are gentle enough for any skin type and contain Aloe to help soothe sunburns and calm skin. Speaking of sunburns, another Spring Break essential is a quality sunscreen. Coola is a great organic brand that offers a wide range of sunscreens. My favorite is the Coola Sport Continuous Spray SPF 35 in the Pina Colada scent. Just the scent alone makes this product Spring Break worthy. It is easy to apply and last for 40 minutes while in the water. Pair it with the Coola Sport Liplux SPF 30 to protect and nourish your lips. After a day outside a nice shower is just what you need to continue the relaxation. Instead of lugging around your large shampoo and conditioner bottles take the Frederic Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Starter Kit. It is the perfect size for travel and gives your hair a wonderful clean scent and shine. If your beachy waves are just too fantastic to shower away than try a dry shampoo to refresh your hair, add volume and absorb oil. Alterna BAMBOO Style Cleanse Extend Translucent Dry Shampoo may be sprayed on the roots and works with all hair colors. To finish packing, throw in a toothbrush and some clothes and you are set for a fabulous week of sunshine!
