Men Face Higher Skin Cancer Rate

Published on by

Sunscreen protection is vital for both men and women. Studies have proven skin cancer is more prevalent in men. Men get twice the overall number of skin cancers and three times more squamous cell carcinomas that women do according to Tatiana M. Oberyszyn, PhD, assistant professor of pathology at Ohio State University in Columbus. Why? Men are more likely than women to have outdoor jobs and they are less likely to protect their skin with sunscreen. In addition, men are less likely to perform self-exams and to go see the doctor. Is the application of a sunscreen a cosmetic issue or a health issue?

To test this theory, Oberyszyn’s team exposed a breed of hairless mice to ultraviolet rays from a sun lamp. The mice underwent eight- to 10-minute tanning sessions three times a week for six months. That was enough to give both male and female mice skin cancer. As a side note, this is an important finding as well: Really validating the negative impact of using tanning beds on a regular basis.

“We found males got skin tumors earlier, got more of them, and more of the tumors were severe,” states Oberyszyn. Tests of male and female mouse skin turned up a surprising finding. The male skin cells carried fewer antioxidants than the female skin cells. It turns out that male skin is more sensitive than female skin. Skin cancer is the cancer men are most likely to face.

In fact, men over 50 are more than twice as likely as women to develop and die from skin cancer. Men are also about twice as likely to develop basal and squamous cell skin cancers as well. And it’s not just men over 50 who are at risk: a recent study by the Mayo Clinic has found that the rates for squamous and basal cell carcinoma have jumped for men under 40.

Men typically have less hair to cover ears and scalp, two important areas where they develop skin cancer more often than women. Men also top women in skin cancers of the often-exposed back, chest, and shoulders. These are the areas that require self-examinations. It is time for men to step up and put sunscreen on!

Men must put an ample amount of sunscreen on, and reapply every 70 minutes when directly under the sun. Hats that have protection for the neck and ears should be used. The reality is that sun protection is a very serious health issue and should not be ignored.

We recommend Menscience TiO2 Sunblock SPF 30. It is packaged in an easy to use and carry tube to facilitate application. It combines advanced ingredients for the ultimate sunscreen; an ultralight, non-greasy waterproof and sweat proof formula that provides maximum protection (SPF30). While moisturizing, nurturing and helping to repair the damaging effects of the sun: For everyday use or for extreme environmental conditions. It is appropriate for all skin types.

Must Have Travel Products for Spring Break

Published on by

With Spring Break around the corner I am sure there are plenty of college students and families gearing up for a week off of school and a much deserved break from the day-to-day. Whether you are heading to the beach or a mini vacay the key to packing for a Spring Break trip is to pack light. Bathing suit, sandals and just the beauty basics are all you need for a care-free week off from life. I have provided some super simple ways to lighten the load for your trip.

First Aid Beauty Gentle Cleansing Wipes are a natural, quick and easy way to wipe down after a day in the sun to cleanse the skin. They are gentle enough for any skin type and contain Aloe to help soothe sunburns and calm skin. Speaking of sunburns, another Spring Break essential is a quality sunscreen. Coola is a great organic brand that offers a wide range of sunscreens. My favorite is the Coola Sport Continuous Spray SPF 35 in the Pina Colada scent. Just the scent alone makes this product Spring Break worthy. It is easy to apply and last for 40 minutes while in the water. Pair it with the Coola Sport Liplux SPF 30 to protect and nourish your lips. After a day outside a nice shower is just what you need to continue the relaxation. Instead of lugging around your large shampoo and conditioner bottles take the Frederic Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Starter Kit. It is the perfect size for travel and gives your hair a wonderful clean scent and shine. If your beachy waves are just too fantastic to shower away than try a dry shampoo to refresh your hair, add volume and absorb oil. Alterna BAMBOO Style Cleanse Extend Translucent Dry Shampoo may be sprayed on the roots and works with all hair colors. To finish packing, throw in a toothbrush and some clothes and you are set for a fabulous week of sunshine!

Why Retinol & The Sun Don’t Mix…

Published on by

It is easy to get carried away with a new product, especially when you want to start the New Year off fresh. It is important to SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0remember that directions and guidelines are provided for a reason and more isn’t always better.

Retinol or vitamin A, is a great addition to your skincare regimen when used correctly. Retinol comes in several forms and can be found in peels, creams and moisturizers. Vitamin A is a powerful, chemical exfoliator that sloughs away dead skin from the surface revealing youthful looking skin and can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. However, with the absence of dead skin cells, the surface of the skin can be more susceptible to sun damage. It is important to use retinol products in the evening and use a high dose of SPF (sunscreen) during the day to ensure you aren’t damaging your newly exfoliated skin. It is also important to note that the percentage of retinol can differ from brand to brand.

When used appropriately, retinol can be the greatest anti-aging weapon in your medicine cabinet. Always follow the instructions provided and you will be looking amazing in no time!

Some of our fave retinol products are SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0 and SkinMedica Retinol Complex 1.0. You can find them on SkinStore.com.

The Golden Rules to a Golden Glow

Published on by

When you reach for your sunscreen, are you 100% certain you know what you are applying? Here are a few tidbits of knowledge to help you through the summer without getting burned.

Did you know that sunscreen loses its efficacy after 12 months? Ingredients that contain sun protection factors such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are active ingredients so they can’t be expected to last forever. They have a shelf life just like your peanut butter so be sure to purchase a new bottle every summer.

*Helpful tip: Mark your bottle of sunscreen with the date you bought it!

Did you know you should apply sunscreen (no matter then SPF) every TWO hours? Sunscreen does not block the sun entirely and although you may have slathered yourself with sunscreen, it is not meant to last you a whole day exposed to the Sun’s harmful rays.

*Helpful tip: If you out and about, set an alarm on your phone every two hours to remind you!

Are you covering all the necessary spots or just your nose? Ears, eyelids, the scalp, lips and feet are the most often forgotten body part when applying sunscreen. Be sure to cover these areas to protect yourself from sun damage and possible health concerns.

Helpful tip: Spray sunscreens are incredibly convenient and you can cover yourself in seconds without greasy hands! A few of our faves are La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Spray and Supergoop SPF 30 Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C.

Beauty Tip: Avoid the Green Scene

Published on by

Ever heard of blonde hair turning green from swimming in a pool? Unfortunately, this is not an urban legend. Being a blonde myself I am super cautious about getting my hair wet in the pool and I am way too insecure to go around rocking a swim cap. So, over the years I have picked up a few tricks to help prevent those dreaded green pool tresses.

One tip that I hear a lot is to wet your hair before you go in the pool. The idea is that your hair will absorb the tap water and not the pool water. I always pictured having to either take a shower to wet my hair or drench my hair with a garden hose in order to do this. Since it was such a hassle I only did this a handful of times. I was recently complaining to a friend of mine about the hardships of being blonde, like the expense, stupid jokes and green pool hair when she suggested that I carry a water spray bottle in my pool bag so I could conveniently spray my hair before jumping in the pool. This was the most brilliant idea I have ever heard (maybe some of these blonde jokes have a point). So now I carry a small spray bottle with tap water and I like to add a few drops of conditioner to give my hair some extra protection. I also try to shampoo my hair as soon as I am done with the pool. So far I have avoided the green scene and the swim cap!

Melanoma Guide: Know your ABC’s

Published on by

dreamstime_5149749Skin cancer is a widely spread type of cancer that affects millions of people each year. The most common form of cancer is melanoma and it is caused from the sun. There are four basic categories of melanoma which includes: superficial spreading, lentigo maligna, acral lentiginous, and nodular melanoma. The most common form is superficial spreading melanoma. Other types of skin cancers are basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. By protecting yourself, especially from the hours of 10:00am to 4:00 pm, you can greatly lower your risk because this is when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Each time your skin   burns you are damaging your DNA, which can greatly increase your chances of getting skin cancer. In fact if you have had five or more sunburns at any age of your life, the risk of you getting melanoma doubles. It is important to be able to recognize the signs of melanoma because early detection means a greater chance of survival and recovery. The first sings of skin cancer are usually atypical moles, so it is important to be able to recognize a potential problem.

Here’s a simple guide to help you spot melanoma is using the ABCDE method:

A= Asymmetry: Melanoma is typically irregular in shape, where as benign (non cancerous) moles are usually round.

B= Border: This is where the outside edges of the mole are not smooth; they appear to be jagged or have notched edges.

C= Color: This one can be tricky because melanoma can look like many shades of brown. The main difference is melanoma will have many shades of brown in one mole and not be one solid color like benign moles. Also if the mole is very dark (almost black), with uneven and jagged edges you may want to get it checked out.

D= Diameter: Typically melanoma lesions are more than ¼ inches wide. As a reference this is about the size of a pencil eraser. If your mole is larger then this, you may want to consult a dermatologist.

E= Evolving: If there is any change in the size, color, or shape this may be potentially dangerous. Also if you have any other symptoms such as bleeding, itching, or crusting of the area you will want to have it looked at by a medical professional.

The most common areas that melanoma can be found are on the torso, head, neck, and lower legs.  It is suggested that you check your skin every 6-8 weeks on your own for suspicious moles. It is also important to make an appointment with your dermatologist to do a full body mole check once a year. Especially if you have had cancer in the past, you are more susceptible to getting it again. Also if you have a family history of cancer, this could greatly increase the risk of developing melanoma. If your doctor has any suspicions that a mole may be cancerous, they may perform a biopsy to better determine the outcome.

The number one way to protect your skin from the sun is to use sunscreen daily. A few of our favorite SPF products are La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid, La Roche Posay Anthelios 50 Daily Anti-Aging Primer with Sunscreen, SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50 and SkinCeuticals Sport UV Defense SPF 50.
