There is a lot of confusion when it comes to sunscreen. One of the most common questions is, “what are the differences between a physical sunscreen and a chemical sunscreen?” Here is a quick and easy guide in the major differences in these types of sunscreens.
Physical sunscreen: Deflects the sun rays off the skin to protect it from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.
-A physical sunscreen contains a zinc oxide or/and titanium dioxide.
-One of the best perks of a physical sunscreen is that is works instantly. There is no wait time between applying the sunscreen and going outdoors.
-Physical sunscreens also are more stable than a chemical sunscreen and generally safe to use.
Chemical Sunscreen: Absorbs sun rays and acts as a filter.
-A Chemical Sunscreen contains any of the following: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate.
-Not as stable and may cause irritation.
-Must wait 20 minutes after applying before going outdoors.
-Chemical sunscreens are very controversial right now and how your body absorbs these chemicals and how these chemicals are affecting our bodies in the long run.
I’ve been experimenting with different SPF products for a while now. There are literally hundreds to choose from and they all promise to be the best. My biggest complaints with SPF have been texture and smell. The higher the SPF the thicker consistency; the thicker the consistency the greasier my skin felt and continued to get throughout the day. The smell was also a difficult challenge. As an esthetician, I know the crucial importance SPF plays on skin health. However, I’m being honest; I just stopped wearing it because it became confusing and tiresome. What is the right number for me to wear? How much should I put on? I keep wiping my face all day long, is this stuff still on my skin? Finally, I relied on the SPF provided by my makeup. If this sounds like you, then I have great news!
Coola Face SPF 30 Mineral Matte Tint Unscented has been amazing for me. You can defend your skin from both the sun and environmental pollution with a chemical free, mineral matte shield. The matte really helps control oily shine for most of the day. This product glides on silky smooth and sticks to the skin, which makes it easy to wear foundation without any problems. This unscented, lightly tinted formula delivers broad spectrum SPF 30 protection, as it fights the damaging effects of free radicals. Please don’t let the tint fool you or deter you from this product. The tint is almost sheer and provides almost no coverage. Both men and women can use it without problems. This product is suitable for all skin tones. Antioxidant-infused Borage Seed Oil and Evening Primrose Extract will rejuvenate skin, targeting early signs of aging. Shea Butter hydrates and softens sun-exposed skin while restoring elasticity. Plankton, a naturally water-resistant phyto-protector boosts SPF protection, making this the perfect everyday companion. It works like a treatment for your skin as well as protection. This really nice product comes at a mid-range price and will provide more than sun protection benefits. I highly recommend giving it a try.

The summer months can take a toll on the skin. From sunny vacations to outdoor activities and the sun’s harsh rays beating down during your daily commute, sun protection is extra important during these warmer months. The summer season finds the sun the highest in the sky causing UVA/UVB rays to be stronger and more direct, especially during the 10 am – 4 pm hours.
Adding a broad spectrum sunscreen into your daily routine — no matter what time of day you are out — dramatically improves your level of protection. If the sun is out, a broad spectrum sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin. Broad spectrum sunscreens protect against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are responsible for premature aging, while UVB rays result in sunburn.
To supplement direct sun care, C&E Strengthand C&E Strength Maxoffer maximum percentages of pure vitamins C and E to aid the skin’s ability to support itself against external damages while improving fine lines and wrinkles. The unique delivery system in these products allow for the vitamins to be safely encapsulated and provide maximum effectiveness.
Ultimately, one of the best things you can do for your skin is to avoid these harsh rays whenever possible. Rearranging your outdoor activities and chores to before or after the hottest point of the day and staying away from artificial tanning is the number one method of protection.

Summer is coming and that means it’s time to ramp up your SPF routine! While most of us are diligent about applying sunscreen in the morning every day we fail to reapply throughout the day. A great option for us gals that wear makeup is Colorescience Sunforgettable SPF30 Brush Perfectly Clear. This is a sunscreen in a translucent powder form that can be applied on top of your makeup! This makes the sheer thought of reapplication a snap! Simply dust on the sunscreen with the handy retractable brush and bam sun protection!
We have all been there. You spent the entire day out in the sun and are diligent in applying SPF only to discover that you have a burnt scalp. I usually have a sunburn right down the part in my hair. Your scalp is fried to the point that showering and combing your hair has become a form of torture. A few days later your sunburned scalp starts peeling and you have little flakes of skin in your hair. Luckily, there has been an answer to our prayers. It is Quintessence Q-Sunshade Leave in Hair Conditioner and Scalp Protectant SPF 30. It is a broad spectrum SPF 30 that you just apply and leave in, so easy! Plus it helps protect color treated hair and condition, moisturize and nourish. I even use this on my little one; his hair is still baby fine and sparse. I tried using the spray sunscreen to protect his scalp, but it just sprayed onto his hair and not his scalp. With this leave in conditioner, I can rub it onto his scalp without him looking like a grease pit. It is a definite summer essential.
As an esthetician we are constantly asking our clients if they are using an SPF. Proper sun protection is so important in skin care and it is the number 1 most important anti-aging product in your regimen. All too often I have women tell me that they have SPF in their makeup and therefore they believe that they do not need to apply a sunscreen. This is absolutely NOT true. While it is a great added bonus that your makeup contains SPF, it is not a substitution for applying a sunscreen. The truth is most people do not apply the layers of coverage they need from their makeup to get proper sun protection. Also, sunscreen needs to be applied every 2 hours when outdoors. Your face would be piled with makeup at the end of the day. An SPF 30 or higher should be part of your daily morning skin care regimen. You are welcome to apply your makeup over that for added benefit. Skinstore has a wide selection of sunscreens to offer for all skin types. One of our favorites is SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50.
Indoor tanning salons are just as popular as fast food restaurants in some cities. They promise the bronzed beauty that comes with a great tan. I am guilty of baking myself in tanning beds for years. I would listen to the teenage girl that worked at the tanning salon tell me how the UVA rays from the beds were safe and it was even smart to get a base tan in the summer to help protect my skin from the Sun. I knew better than to believe all this nonsense, but I just wanted to look tan. Now, I am older and wiser, but I have awful sun damage as a result of my poor tanning decisions. I no longer tan and am diligent about wearing proper SPF. I wish I knew all the harmful effects that I know now.
Here is some real and true information about tanning beds. UVA rays are not safe. In fact UVA rays penetrate deeper into your skin, cause melanoma and premature aging. A typical tanning bed emits about 95% UVA rays and about 5% UVB rays. The UVA rays from a tanning bed are 12 times stronger than what we are exposed to from the Sun. The reason for this is because UVA rays make the skin darker faster. They also cause sagging skin, skin cancer and eye damage, including ocular melanoma (eye cancer). This information was never mentioned while I was shelling out money for my tanning service. I wish I knew that just one tanning session increased my chances of getting melanoma by 20%. And each additional session within that year tacked on another 2% risk. Tanning beds have been moved to “carcinogenic to humans” category which is the highest risk category for cancer. Shockingly, there are more cases of cancer due to indoor tanning than cases of lung cancer due to smoking (study by JAMA dermatology). No, tan is worth the risk. There are plenty of great self-tanners available now that are a safe alternative to tanning. Your future, older self will thank you! A couple of our staff favorites are Kate Somerville360 Body Self Tanning Towelettes and Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Blow Pads.
