Fact or Fiction? Common Myths in the Beauty World

Published on by

MYTH #1: The FDA ensures that all cosmetics statements are factual before you buy them.

A: FALSE! The FDA or Food & Drug Administration does not require approval of cosmetics before their manufacture and sale since the products are neither labeled for dietary consumption or as a medial supplement. The FDA onlySkinStore.com regulated the claims made and the labeling provided on each product. Cosmetics can ONLY claim to change the appearance of the body or skin, not the function.

MYTH #2: Sunscreen can actually increase the risk of skin cancer.

A: FALSE! Octinoxate is a chemical sunscreen that is preferred by sensitive skin types. Most physical sunscreens contain zinc oxide which can cause irritation. NO sunscreen can block 100% of the sun’s rays (UVB, UVA or otherwise). You will notice a large change in the way sunscreens are marketed in the United States. The Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, labels the strength of the sunscreen but does no matter how the strong sunscreen, they lose their potency after about two hours and need to be reapplied.

MYTH #3: Exfoliating scrubs can be used as an explosive.

A: FALSE! Most exfoliants or “scrubs” contain a variety of grainy materials ranging from fruit pits to seeds to diatomaceous earth, which help slough of dead skin cells from the surface. Diatomaceous earth (DE), marine sediment or fossil algae, is used in many other products not limited to the skincare industry. DE can also be combined with nitroglycerin to classify as dynamite, which is never found in skin care products.

MYTH #4: Your waterproof mascara coats your lashes in plastic.

A: TRUE! Plastic derivatives have been used in a variation of products for many years. Plastic derivatives or polymers are crucial in the production of hairspray, hair gel, liquid bandages and even perfumes. Polymers, when viewed under a microscope, are perfectly round spheres and do not damage the surface of the skin or irritate sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, or nose.

MYTH #5: Lipsticks contains a lethal amount of lead.

A: FALSE! In 2009, the FDA developed a method of testing to determine the amount of lead in products. It was then the FDA confirmed that the amount of lead found in lipstick was detected in 20 lipstick products but very low and did not pose any safety or health concerns. The lead levels are attributed to color additives and other ingredients that are acceptable by the FDA.

Ever since I was a little girl I have been interested in skincare. I remember training myself when I was eight years old to sleep on Bridgettemy back to prevent getting wrinkles. So it’s only natural that I would grow up and become an esthetician. Being an esthetician at Skinstore we have access to some of the best skincare brands and products. I would like to share some of my all-time favorite products.

Honestly, I have not always been that great about wearing sunscreen. I felt like it was too thick and made my face look pasty plus my makeup wouldn’t stay on as well. I know sunscreen is the best product to use to protect your skin and prevent aging but sometimes it just didn’t seem worth it. Then I discovered SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50, LOVE! It is a lightweight sunscreen with a perfect sheer tint that evens out my skin tone. My makeup no longer melts off my face and lasts all day. I recommend that everyone try this sunscreen. It’s truly amazing!

There are so many serums out there that promise the world, it can be overwhelming at times! Which products actually live up to what they claim? The Arcona Instant Magic Reversal Serum is exactly what it states, it’s magic! It’s everything you would want out of a serum. It’s corrective, hydrating and preventative. When I apply this serum my skin is instantly transformed. If I had only one skin care product to use this would be it.

Lastly, I have been blessed with a skin condition called hyperkeratosis pilaris. That is the scientific name for “I have ugly red bumps on the back of my arms and thighs”. These bumps are caused by having a blockage in the hair follicle. I have tried so many exfoliating creams and even microdermabrasion treatments to get rid of the bumps. Everything I have tried has either taken too long or is too costly. However Jan Marini Bioglycolic Resurfacing Body Scrub is affordable, fast and you see amazing results. I even use it on my chest and back to help diminish signs of sun damage. It has a light citrus smell and doesn’t leave your shower gritty with scrub.  It is the perfect product for body care.

So out of the millions of products I have stored away in my bathroom these three products are my absolute favorites. I swear by them!

Understanding SPF

Published on by

Understanding SPFThese days everyone is looking for a way to slow down the aging processes and since the Fountain of Youth has yet to be found, we all turn to the next best thing – SPF (Sun Protection Factor). Until recently, many individuals were a little unsure of what type of protection our SPF was providing. With the increased risk of skin cancer, we now realize that what we don’t know CAN hurt us, thus many have turned to their dermatologists or esthetician for education.

Let’s begin with a basic understanding of how the sun can cause damage to our unprotected skin. Sunlight contains two types of ultraviolet radiation which can damage the skin, ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB).

UVA, known as the “aging” ray, can penetrate deeper into our skin and cause symptoms of premature aging such as wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and damaged collagen. It is believed that UVA is up to 20 times more abundant in sunlight than UVB rays. In addition, the UVA wave-lengths are longer, can pass through window glass and they are not affected by weather – in other words, they are active and present every day, all day – rain or shine! So – don’t be fooled, wear your SPF even on a cloudy day the UVA rays are just as harmful whether sunny or cloudy outside.

UVB is known as the “burning” ray. The UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and increased melanin production (the cause of tanning). These rays are shorter and more intense than the UVA rays however; they can not pass through window glass. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation about 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers are linked with ultraviolet radiation exposure. UVB play’s a significant role in these statistics. In addition, unlike UVA rays, the intensity of the UVB rays can be affected by altitude and latitude thus, individuals may experience a higher level of exposure while in mountainous regions and near the equator.

At SkinStore.com we offer a wide selection of SPF products. We have a variety of both chemical sunscreens and physical sun blocks. Chemical sunscreens use synthetic compounds to filter the sunlight by absorbing them before they can do any harm. Some active ingredients in chemical sunscreens are octylcrylene, avobenzone, octinoxate, LP036-anthelios-sxoctisalate, oxybenzone and Mexoryl, the ingredient in Anthelios SX. Mexoryl was approved as recently as 2006 by the FDA for protection against UVA and UVB rays.  Chemical sunscreens are fantastic because they absorb very easily into the skin, which is a big plus for an oilier skin type however, they might not be suited for sensitive or allergy prone skin types. Physical sun blocks provide a barrier on the skin deflecting sunlight off the surface similar to the way a mirror would reflect light. The most common ingredients in a physical sun block are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. While both provide great protection to UVA and UVB rays, individual preference may include consideration factors such as consistency and physical attributes of the ingredients.

SPF labels–we have all seen one right? So what do they mean?…in short, SPF labels are our guide for understanding a sunscreens capacity for protecting our skin from sun damage. The higher the SPF, the greater the amount of UVB rays are blocked – though no sunscreen will block 100% of the UVB rays, an SPF50 can block up to 98% of those harmful rays! The SPF level also helps to determine the amount of time we can be in the sun while remaining protected. For example, if you normally begin to turn pink after 10 minutes of being in the sun with out sunscreen, an SPF 15 may protect your skin for up to 2.5 hours before you may experience sunburn. Remember, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that sunscreens be applied 30 minutes before exposure to the sun with reapplication at least every two hours – the active ingredient in most sunscreens breaks down quickly, leaving your skin unprotected. Better to be safe than sorry, right?! LP059-anth-60-ultra-light-f

La Roche Posay offers a fabulous broad-spectrum protection product called Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid. They have created a synergistic combination called Cell-ox Shield which is high efficacy sun filters and powerful anti-oxidants to further protect your skin. So you’re not only protecting your skin from external harm, you’re promoting internal health as well. One of my personal favorites is the Colorescience Pro Sunforgettable Mineral Sun Protection Brush SPF 50-Medium. It’s great because I can toss it my purse and do touch-ups through out the day, right on top of my make-up. It’s also a physical block with 12.45% active titanium PT161-unwrinkle-powder-spfdioxide and 9.80% zinc oxide, with complete transparency and mattifing mineral powder. Not only that, but it also contains a blend of six powerful, active wrinkle relaxing and anti-aging peptides and neuropeptides! What more could a girl ask for!? Okay…maybe if this also made me ten pounds lighter it would be every girl’s dream come true.

Melasma

Published on by

Melasma also known as the mask of pregnancy is hyperpigmentation that forms patches of brown to gray-brown patches on the Melasmaface. It’s most often found on the cheeks, bridge of nose, forehead, chin and above the upper lip. Melasma occurs when the color making cells in the skin or melanocytes produce too much color. If you have a darker complexion you’re more prone to melasma because you have more active melanocytes than someone with a lighter complexion.

Common causes include:

Sun exposure: Ultraviolet or UV light from the sun stimulates the melanocytes. Even just a small amount of sun exposure can make your melasma return after fading. It often gets worse in the summer with continued sun exposure.

Change in hormones: Melasma is common in pregnant women, is often called chloasma or the mask of pregnancy. Birth control pills can also trigger melasma.

Not all hyperpigmentation is Melasma. To be properly diagnosed, you will need to see a Dermatologist.

Treatments include:

Hydroquinone-this can be found in a 2% strength OTC or 4% strength with a prescription, to help lighten the skin.

Tretinoin- a prescription vitamin A or all-trans retinoic acid enhances skin lightening.

Professional treatments that may help include: chemical peels, microdermabrasion and dermabrasion.

Melasma is a difficult skin condition to treat because sun exposure, the main cause, is present in our everyday lives. It’s very important to wear sunscreen every day and reapply every 2 hours. If you know you will be in the sun for long periods of time, be sure to wear a wide brim floppy hat for more coverage.

We recommend PCA SKIN Pigment Gel and Colorscience Pro Sunforgettable Mineral Sun Protection Brush SPF 50 for best results.

Commonly Asked Questions: Part 2

Published on by

What is the difference between physical exfoliation, enzymatic exfoliation, and chemical exfoliation? A physical exfoliation is one that you can physically feel to the touch. It’s often in the form of beads or granules like that in a scrub. Whereas an enzymatic exfoliation is usually in a treatment type product like a mask, peel, cleanser, etc. Enzymes are found in fruit acids and are generally better tolerated by sensitive skin types. Chemical exfoliators are also found in treatment type products, but are Top 5 Skin Care Resolutionsmore aggressive and are usually found in the form of acids like Glycolic, Salicylic, AHA’s, & BHA’s. Chemical exfoliators are better suited for normal to tolerant skin types.

When is sunscreen needed? The answer is all the time. You should always wear sunblock! Whether you use daily skincare products or not sunblock helps prevent damage, period. Using sunscreen religiously is the number one thing you can do to prevent pre mature aging!

Do extreme hot/ cold temperatures ruin my product? No. We have confirmed with various manufacturers on this very issue and temperature does not compromise the integrity of the product. If you receive a product and it is either extremely hot or extremely cold bring the product inside and let it go back to room temperature before use. You may also need to shake or stir the product if the ingredients have separated. This does not change the efficacy of the product, it’s good to use.

Why doesn’t my product have a seal on it? Since we’re shipped product directly from the manufacturer to our warehouse it’s not required for the products to come sealed. It is up to the manufacturer if they choose to seal the product or not. Rest assured our inventory doesn’t make contact with the public until it is shipped directly to your door. All returns are sent back to a different facility and aren’t shipped back to the warehouse.

Is the date listed on my product the expiration date? Not always. Most products will list a sequence of digits or numbers that can look like a date format. This is usually a manufactured date, lot number, or batch number. An expiration date will have the letters EXP in front of the date sequence.  Most all SPF products will have an expiration date printed on the product or packaging along with certain organic brands. If it does not, you can use the sequence of digits listed to contact the manufacturer directly for more information.
