It’s no secret that glowing skin resonates with youth and good health. Here are the cardinal rules that you can follow to ensure pretty, radiant skin.
Diet: A healthy diet provides for healthy skin. To ensure that your complexion glows eat lots of vegetables, berries, fruits, healthy grains, calcium-rich foods like milk, yogurt and buttermilk. Incorporate healthy proteins like chicken and tofu, and omega-rich foods like fish and nuts. Eating healthily will not only make you feel better and healthier, it’ll also contribute to pretty, fresh, youthful and glowing skin!
Antioxidants: it’s a buzz word for a good reason. Antioxidants ward off aging (and many health problems) by protecting our cells from free radicals and oxidative stress. While a diet rich in antioxidants will contribute to healthy skin from the inside out, antioxidant-rich topical treatments that we apply to our skin will also help to ward off oxidative stress externally, resulting in a bright and even complexion. Topical antioxidant treatments come in many forms; serums, gels, lotions, creams, even built into cleansers and sunscreen products that we use… so there’s no excuse to not use an antioxidant product!
Sunscreen: Everyone should wear a sunscreen daily, even when it’s overcast the sun’s harmful rays penetrate through the clouds and can seriously damage our skin. Sun damaged skin is dull, lackluster and drab. It can also develop sun spots and excess freckles, resulting in an unsightly and uneven coloration. Skin cancer is caused by sun damage and can be prevented through regular use of sunscreen. There are many available sunscreen formulations on the market, so everyone will have their favorite (& no excuse to forgo one)!
Exfoliation: Just as everyone should wear a sunscreen, everyone should also exfoliate. Exfoliation is key to smooth, radiant skin. Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells (which make the skin look lifeless and dull) and it helps to even the skin tone, so if you have existing sun damage or hyperpigmentation, exfoliating regularly can help to lessen the appearance of bothersome spots. Manual exfoliants have small granules to remove dead skin cells- look for products that contain jojoba beads, which are rounded particles that effectively scrub the skin. If you prefer a chemical exfoliant an alpha hydroxyl acid will do the trick; look for products that contain glycolic, lactic, citric, malic or mandelic acid. If you prefer a very gentle exfoliant, try enzymes which eat dead skin cells without disturbing the healthy skin barrier.
Hydration: Hydrated skin is plump and dewy, so everyone must use a moisturizer (even the oiliest skin types need to hydrate with a light, oil-free moisturizer). A moisturizer will lock hydration into the skin so treatment products can work more effectively- and a moisturizer will ward off premature aging too!
Remember that you can fake a little bit of a glow too- use illuminating products that boost the skin’s radiance, here are some of our favorites:
Philosophy Divine Illumination; what makes this anti-aging moisturizer especially unique are light diffusers and natural skin enhancers that help give skin luminosity for a healthy glow.
Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15; Skin instantly looks softer and younger with this handy multi-tasker. It delivers a hint of sheer coverage, subtle shimmer, SPF 15 and added moisture in one effortless application.?
I’m always on the look out for new products that meet the needs of the men who are looking to take care of themselves. There are an abundance of skincare products, but so many of them are designed for, and marketed to women. Men’s grooming and skincare is one of the fastest growing markets! As forty has become the new thirty and we’re all living longer, you better believe we want to keep that handsome masculinity… Dad included!
After having recently tested out some products I was VERY pleased to have stumbled across products made by Pevonia Botanica. Don’t let the fancy name fool you, these products are reasonably priced, they produce fabulous results, and the items I’m recommending don’t come in pretty little pink containers that Dad will have to keep out of site from his buddies!
“Foam a small quantity between very wet palms, apply on face and neck. Work with wet fingertips. Rinse with warm water. Follow with Timeless Repair Lotion. For all skin types. Use morning and evening.”
“Wet Beard with warm water, apply the Shaving Emulsion all over the area to be shaved: The emulsion should coat the skin. Proceed with shaving. Recommended for all skin types especially sensitive skin.”
“Apply to face and neck with a cotton pad, use morning and evening.”
These products contain ingredients such as Caviar Extract, Hyaluronic Acid, Lemon Peel Oil, Vitamin E and the ever important Chamomile that all work to cleanse, repair and protect your skin. What I loved about these products is that they have a very subtle masculine, woodsy aromatic smell from the Chamomile. A very old school masculine smell but not overpowering. A definite thumbs up from me and a must have gift to make Dad feel special!
Judging product results can be very tricky. How do you know the product you purchased is working for you? How can you tell if the product is doing what it claims? How can you be sure you even purchased the correct product for the skin concern you have?
It is very important to start at the beginning and write down a list of what skin concerns you have. I would suggest a list of top ten or five concerns arranged from highest to least importance. Identify what concerns need the most attention to detail and start there.
Before you go any further be aware that you need to be using (at the bare minimum) a cleanser, toner and moisturizer (in that order). Using one product alone and not using any other skincare products will limit the effectiveness and results of that one product.
Many times customers with aged or acneic skin call in with concerns about their skin feeling dry, tight or peeling after having used a retinol based product. Upon further consultation I usually find that customers are using the correct product, but the retinol level may be too high. Some brands offer retinol in graduating levels. Unfortunately sometimes in haste we may choose the most potent level thinking it will give us the best or quickest results. In fact retinol products that have graduating levels are designed for you to use them at the lower level first. You can then graduate upwards once your skin has adjusted. You can stop increasing the potency level once you find a level that works for you. Also retinol based products do cause a certain level of drying and peeling.
Be sure to give the product time to work. Ordering a product to address your skin concerns and using it for a few days or a week or two may not be enough time. You may need to use the product(s) for 4-6 weeks before you see noticeable results. Set up a skincare regimen through your esthetician or dermatologist and stick to it.
Finally, set realistic goals and expectations. Thirty years of neglecting to use sunscreen and prolonged sun exposure throughout your early years will not be corrected with one jar of the latest skin care cream in one month! Have someone take a photograph of your face and neck area before you begin to treat that area. Take another photograph at the end of each week. At the end of that four to six week period then compare your first week and last week photos and judge the results.
As always if you are uncertain what products to use you can contact us and we would be happy to help design a skin care regimen for you!

What is your skin like? My skin is a real trouble maker. It’s oily… everywhere, but it’s also dehydrated. It breaks out…..everywhere. And there is sun damage…..everywhere. Oh, and it doesn’t appreciate frequent use uses of aggressive products. I have tried this approach but it retaliates with redness and dry, irritated areas. I have to coerce it into behaving properly with a balancing/ juggling act that I have choreographed over the years. To top it off, I am trying to ward off signs of aging, so I have added a couple new products to my routine.
What is your main concern? All of the above.
What does your skincare regimen consist of? See below.
Treatment #1:SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum – This is like 3 serums in one. An anti-aging serum full of peptides and growth factors, an antioxidant serum to prevent and repair free radical damage, and a hydrating serum with sodium hyaluronate. I could go on and on.
It seems that everywhere you look today men’s grooming is all the buzz around town. Now that the male culture is more comfortable with being in tune with grooming techniques and products, we want to know more about what to do, and which products work best!
Some of us have normal to dry skin, some oily, some combination. Some guys have difficulty with shaving, irritation and ingrown hair. Others may have ongoing acne issues and, some of us approaching our 40’s and 50’s may be concerned with preventing signs of aging.
Men have just as many skin concerns as women but women get so much more product and education from the skincare industry. Not to worry! Here are some skincare 101 basics:
Be sure you wash your hands with an antibacterial soap before you begin your skincare routine. You don’t want to introduce new bacteria to skin you’re cleaning!
If you want to use a facial brush make sure you rinse it after use, dry it and store it in a dry container with air vents. If you want to use a wash cloth be sure to use a fresh cloth each time.
Rinse your wash cloth with warm to hot water (not so hot it burns!). Squeeze out the excess and place the cloth over your face for about 30 seconds to one minute. This helps to open your pores. You can also do this before shaving; it helps to open your pores, help the hairs stand up, and soften hair.
Apply your cleanser to your neck and face, avoiding eye contact.
Rinse the cleanser off with warm water and pat face dry with a clean dry towel.
Apply your toner. Apply any serums after toner has dried.
Apply your moisturizer. Moisturizer is one of the most important items, especially for acneic skin. (Most guys think if they have acne they don’t need a moisturizer…who needs moisture when you have oily skin right? Wrong! Not using a moisturizer on acneic skin can actually cause more oil! Not good!) Choosing a moisturizer can be confusing. If you need help choosing the right moisturizer please contact our helpful estheticians.
Apply an SPF 15 or higher for daily use to avoid aging and sun spotting. Apply 30 or higher for direct sun exposure for long periods of time, at least 30 minutes before sun exposure.
Remember these steps and take care of your skin now, and you’ll have less repairing to worry about later! If you have further questions about your skin concerns or products that SkinStore carries, don’t hesitate to contact us.
Spring is here and summer will be upon us before we know it! We all know what better weather means; more socializing, more trips, more days at the pool and more exposure to the sun! Before you reconnect with all of your summer buddies, make sure you put your best foot forward. No one wants to look old and tired.
Here are some great suggestions on jump starting a skin care program that can revitalize, reduce signs of aging, fine lines and wrinkles:
To significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and increase firmer skin use Menscience Anti-Aging Formula after you cleanse, before you put on moisturizer or SPF.
Once you’re back on track to cleaner, healthier, revitalized skin make sure you protect it from future sun damage and sun spotting due to harmful UVA & UVB rays. Go out and enjoy the great weather but make sure you have these two items to prevent damage and further aging:
Don’t forget to apply your sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outdoors. If you’re going to stay outside for more than 90 minutes, reapply your sunscreen every 1 ½ – 2 hours. A little bit of protection can go a long way in preventing skin damage!
There you have it. Your everyday essentials! Now get out and enjoy the great weather.
What is your skin like? It’s pretty normal but can tend to sway one way or another depending on weather or environmental conditions. I’m a self proclaimed exfoliating junkie! My skin is very tolerant so I tend overindulge a bit.
What is your main concern? Uneven skin tone and texture, and smile lines.
What does your skincare regimen consist of? See below.
What is your skin like? My skin is normal to dry, and sensitive. I need to be very careful when trying out anything on my face, it is very challenging sometimes.
What is your main concern? Adding hydration and maintaining moisture. Skin sensitivity: It is a perfect balance of giving your skin what it needs but not overdoing it. Preventing sun damage, the sun is the main cause for free radical damage so it’s important to prevent and protect!
What does your skincare regimen consist of? See below.
Cleanse/Tone: If I use a cleanser in the morning I will strip the natural oils in my skin so I skip the cleanser and go right to the Evian Mineral Spray. It conditions and soothes my dry sensitive skin. This is also a great mid day skin spritzer!
Prevent:Topix Replenix Serum CF. This is such a light product, it instantly soaks in ready to do its job by fighting free radicals and improving the look of my skin tone.
Hydrate: Treatments are very important to the restoration and general health of your skin. The SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel is a great hydration tactic for me. I also like to add a few drops to my weekly mask treatment for added benefits of moisture retention.
Day Cream:Avene Rich Compensating Cream. I was afraid at first to use such a thick cream because I thought it would irritate my skin. Boy was I wrong; it provides me with lasting hydration throughout the day and is a great base to wear under my makeup. I also layer this with at least an SPF of 15 sunscreen before I start my day.
What is your skin like? My skin is sensitive and combination. I have an oily forehead and chin area and am normal everywhere else.
What is your main concern? My focus is balancing my skin and regulating it, keeping it clear and radiant without upsetting the skin’s balance. This is by far easier said than done!
My Hero Products
As I’m constantly on a search for the perfect regimen I can’t outline all of my products. I like to mix and match and am constantly on the lookout for hero products to add to my shelf of favorites, however I have found some that always make my skin happy and in turn leave a smile on my face.
Cleanser: I currently switch off between my M2 Skin Technologies Exfoliating Cleanser (Great to brighten up my skin, exfoliate those dead skin cells and balance out my imbalanced skin) & MD Formulations Facial Cleanser Sensitive Formula (Gentle enough to not irritate my skin yet keep my skin soft and hydrated).
Toner: I use Exuviance Soothing Toning Lotion every other day to replenish my skin and help maintain the balance. It is alcohol-free and soothing with a great scent that doesn’t give me a headache after application.
Treatment Products: So far I have only a couple of treatment products which I alternate use with. I have great results with MD Formulations Vit-A-Plus Skin Clearing Complex. This product is oil-free, lightweight and contains ingredients such as BHA, AHA, & Retinol. It absorbs the oils in my problem areas while preventing blemishes, reducing pore size and smoothing my skin texture. I usually switch that up with the M2 Skin Technologies HP Skin Refinish. This product helps hydrate my skin, soften my wrinkles and even out my skin tone. These two products are used as night products after cleansing and toning.
Prevent:iS Clinical C-15 Serum Advance Plus is my go to vitamin C serum. It not only contains 15% vitamin C, but also has copper tripeptide growth factors. So, I’m getting my anti-oxidant protection to prevent pre-mature aging and increasing collagen production and repair existing damage simultaneously.
Hydrate: I love, love, love Kinerase Pro Therapy Lotion with Kinetin and Zeatin as my daily moisturizer. It’s a lightweight formula that gives my combination skin just what it needs. It’s the right balance for my oily T-Zone and normal skin on cheeks and forehead. It’s great to apply right before makeup application, my foundation glides on nice and smooth. Kinerase is also great for repairing sun damage and for sensitive skin types.
Prevent:Topix Replenix Retinol Plus Smoothing Serum 3x is great for evening out my ruddy skin tone and keeping my occasional breakouts at bay. It also contains green tea polyphenols and hyaluronic acid for extra antioxidant protection and hydration.
Hydrate: Right before bed I like to use Jurlique Purely Age-Defying Night Lotion. This lotion is great for my combination skin type and is full of natural ingredients like licorice, black elder, marshmallow and calendula. My skin is refreshed, hydrated, and more even toned when waking in the morning.
Treatment: For an occasional hormonal breakout, La Roche Posay Effaclar AI zaps unwanted invaders. It has a potent blend of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid to kill acne causing bacteria and slough off dead skin cells. This formula does not cause any irritation like many acne products can and does the trick with just a few applications.
