How do we know when our “look” is outdated? If you’ve had the same look for the last 10 or 20 years, it’s definitely time to move on! Holding on to those styles from your teens and twenties doesn’t keep you suspended in your youth. In fact it can make you look VERY outdated! It’s time to take some risks! Go down to the bookstore and take a glance at some fashion magazines (for both men and women.) Get a feel for which looks are in style that best reflect who you are and your personality.

Ladies start with a new hair cut, color and or style. If you’re not sure what to do, tell your hairstylist you’re updating your look and need some suggestions. Consider something short and sassy like a bob or pixie cut! Losing the high school hair can make you look much more sexy, sophisticated and empowered!

Gentlemen lose the bleach blond (Guy Fieri) or overly dark, dyed hair. Go for something more trimmed and clean around the sides and back and a hint of spikes on top. If you’re balding or thinning on top, the best way to go about updating your look is to go short! Shorter hair creates less contrast between the fuller and thinner areas on your scalp. Also, consider updating your sideburns, goatee and/or beard. Sometimes facial hair may be very sexy on the right guy; sometimes it can make a man look downright ridiculous. If you’re graying, a little bit of gray can be sexy but, do-it-yourself dye kits for hair and beards can end up WAY too dark and look obvious.

Buying the same old style turtle neck sweater in a different color doesn’t qualify as updating your look. You need to take some risks and try something new that you wouldn’t normally buy. Take a younger niece or nephew out with you when you go shopping. Ask them to give you their honest opinion on whether the clothes you’ve picked out are the same old same old, way too trendy, or just hip and trendy enough.

Finally is the all important skin care and make-up. Ladies (and gentlemen) if you haven’t already done so, now is the time to start considering a regular regimen of skincare products to undo any damage and aging to your skin and help prevent future damage and aging. Find a good cleanser, toner, moisturizer and SPF and use them on a regular basis! Taking better care of your skin will result in healthier more vibrant skin with less fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots, and dark circles; and less need for heavy makeup and concealers.

When choosing makeup, remember to go classic with a little bit of flair. Avoid the use of metallic’s, heavy bronzers, and glitter. These accentuate lines and wrinkles. Consult with a make-up artist and/or esthetician on designing your eyebrows and eye shadow. Eye shadow contouring and highlighting and color choice can make all the difference in whether your eyes look bright and inviting or dull and sagging.

Correctly designed eyebrows can accentuate your eyes best features and minimize flaws. The wrong eyebrow design can also send the wrong message. And gentlemen, remember the object is to “groom” your brows so you don’t have a unibrow or a couple of caterpillars on your forehead. Don’t go overboard and lose your handsome masculinity.

Keep all of these things in mind while you have fun designing the new you! Now go forward and conquer that mid life crisis!

Ahhh… the warm weather is here. Break out the sandals and sunscreen. Lose the heavy foundation and lighten up with these warm weather tricks:

Opt for tinted moisturizer instead of traditional foundation. Sheer, see-through coverage with a hint of hydration is the ultimate product for hot weather. Most tinted moisturizers not only offer tint and moisture but also pack antioxidants, minerals and sunscreen. I’m in love with Somme Institute Treat and Tint. It contains ingredients that repair sun damage, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, treat and prevent moderate to severe acne and rosacea, as well as significantly improve skin discoloration, tone, texture and clarity.

Those of you that read the blog know that I love lip and cheek stains. They’re super versatile, flattering, easy to use and can provide either a very natural effect or a very dramatic one. Use a liquid or gel lip/cheek stain on the inner rim of your lips for that ‘just-ate-a-cherry-popsicle’ look. It’s simple and sexy. These days finding skin in perfect condition is almost impossible. We weren’t created that way but there are solutions to achieve that perfect skin tone. Depending on environmental damage your skin has been affected by, different skin conditions you may have or skin concerns passed on by heredity; there is a way to help achieve perfection, at least temporarily. Dermablend has different products for many different concerns and offers amazing results.

I cannot count how many times I have personally been asked about the products or asked to help assist someone with the products. There are basically 4 different categories that most all skin concerns can be addressed by.

The first is the Dermablend Cover Creme. It can provide long lasting full coverage of vitilligo, birthmarks, rosacea, redness, scars, bruises, and pigmentation disorders. Depending on your concerns, you’d want to appropriately match up the product with your skin. There are numerous options which cover a wide range of colors or shades. The most common question when looking towards Dermablend products is, “How do I know what color to get?” It is pretty difficult to try and consult for a color over the phone, since we can’t see you. We do suggest however that you either find a local store to do a color test against your skin or you can view the color chart online.

Among finding the right shade, inquiries on application are sought out frequently. Suggestion of application on the Cover Crème Foundation includes, removing a small amount from your jar, warming it on the back of your hand using small circular motions to soften the product, apply over the area of concern using short tapping motions to ensure full coverage, and then blend outward. If you desire extra coverage on the area, then tap on more cream. To ensure wear and to waterproof the coverage, make sure to use the setting powder. You’d want to wait to apply the setting powder until the crème is completely dry on the skin. Powder on your covered areas and wait two minutes. You may then dust off any excess powder with a makeup brush. Application for the Leg & Body Cover include, applying product with your fingertip to the specific area of concern using up and down motions. Make sure you work quickly to avoid any harsh color lines and make sure you blend out the edges of the select area. Before you apply the setting powder to the area, make sure you allow 3-5 minutes for the area to dry. After you pat on the setting powder, wait 2 minutes and then brush off the excess powder.

The Quick- Fix Concealer would need to be applied with your fingertips after warming the product to soften the texture. Apply it to your area of concern and remember to blend out to avoid lines or unevenness in product. Don’t forget to use the setting powder for long wear and durability. Lastly, application for the Smooth Indulgence Foundation includes using the Dermablend foundation brush. It is suggested you work from the inner face, outward in light stokes. You can dab on more product if needed in concern areas. Make sure to blend product down the neck, around the ears and into the forehead area until the maximum coverage is achieved. Don’t forget the setting powder!
