When it comes to mascara, we all find different formulas that we swear by. Mascara is used to thicken, lengthen, darken, and enhance the eyelashes. The use of a mascara-like product goes back to the Victorian era, when women used to make a form of mascara with a mixture of heated ash and elderberry juice and then apply it to their eyelashes. Even farther back in history, the ancient Egyptians—both women and men—used kohl to line their eyes and apply to their eyelashes.
The product that is the closest to the mascara we use today was not created until the 19th Century, by a chemist named Eugene Rimmel. He used the newly-invented Petroleum jelly to create this product. If I could only use one cosmetic for the rest of my life, it would be my mascara. With just a few swipes, I look and feel much more put together.
I‘m always into trying new mascaras and finding the ones I can’t live without. One of my go-to mascaras is Jane Iredale Longest Lash Mascara in Black Ice. The brush gives my lashes a well-defined, separated look that really opens up my eyes. The formula is buildable, so I can apply coat after coat until I achieve the volume I want. This mascara is made with sea minerals that condition the lashes so that they remain healthy and are able to grow as long as possible. The brush is considered oversized and really works well at preventing clumps. The RMS Beauty Defining Mascara is my everyday fave because it gets every lash, especially the small lower ones. The brush is narrow and really is great at getting to the root of the lashes and defining each and every one. The formula is rich and creamy and I never notice any flaking throughout the day. No matter which mascara I use, I stick with this one on my lower lashes. So whether you’re a water proof girl, love the super-glam look, or are into the defined, separated look, there is mascara out there for you!

Contouring enhances your face’s natural curves to create the illusion of more defined bone structure. By using makeup that’s both lighter and darker than your natural skin tone, you can change the way light bounces off your face, in turn enhancing and even slimming your facial features. Dermablend offers the dermatologist-developed and most-recommended products. They’re non-comedogenic, fragrance-free and allergy-tested; they are safe for acne-prone and sensitive skin.Strategically placing contour color two shades darker than your natural skin tone and a lighter highlighter (and blending thoroughly) works wonders for sculpting these areas…
Chiseled cheeks: Place darker contour color beneath the cheekbones (make a “fish face” to see the hollow spot) and highlighter on the tops of the cheekbones.
A slimmer nose: Use darker contour color on the sides of the nose, and highlighter down the center.
A defined jawline: Place contour color along the jawline and blend downwards toward the neck. Use highlighter in the center of the chin and blend outwards.
Once you’ve created your contoured look, you want it to last. That’s where makeup-setting products come in, and there are two different formulations to meet every need.
The easiest way to keep your makeup in place (contouring included) is with a setting mist. With a just a few spritzes, makeup looks freshly applied all day, and it can also be used to refresh your complexion throughout the day without disturbing your makeup (or the need for application tools). Setting mists are ideal for those who wear powder foundation and they are super-easy and mess-free. Try the Dermablend Set + Refresh Spray.
Setting powder may look white to the eye, but it’s invisible when lightly dusted over makeup. This final step keeps makeup smudge- and transfer-resistant and dramatically increases its longevity. These powders are available in loose form and compact form (which is perfect for touch-ups on the go). Tip: Only use setting powder over contoured areas to keep highlighted areas glowing.

All of us have beauty tips that we’ve picked up along the way that have helped us out in a pinch or have provided beauty relief in a new or previously undiscovered way. Extending makeup wear is a popular subject as most of us are dashing from place to place. Look pretty as a plum all day long with these quick tips!
If you suffer from runny eye makeup change to waterproof liquid liner for extended stay put power and all day wear with no re-application.
For all day wear lashes that can last through the office, to the gym and then out to dinner waterproof mascara is your best friend. It will stay put all day and doesn’t require touch up.
Lip stain is perfect for extended wear. Unlike lipstick which is topical, lip stain will actually stain your lip with a light pigment that will last much longer than traditional lip gloss or lip stick. In a pinch, use your lip stain as blush that will stay in place all day.
Use primer before applying your foundation and your makeup will look better and stay in place through the day.
And finally, if you have oily skin, don’t reapply makeup all day, blot it with oil absorbing blotting paper. In a pinch, tear off a piece of a ladies room seat cover and blot away.
As an esthetician we are constantly asking our clients if they are using an SPF. Proper sun protection is so important in skin care and it is the number 1 most important anti-aging product in your regimen. All too often I have women tell me that they have SPF in their makeup and therefore they believe that they do not need to apply a sunscreen. This is absolutely NOT true. While it is a great added bonus that your makeup contains SPF, it is not a substitution for applying a sunscreen. The truth is most people do not apply the layers of coverage they need from their makeup to get proper sun protection. Also, sunscreen needs to be applied every 2 hours when outdoors. Your face would be piled with makeup at the end of the day. An SPF 30 or higher should be part of your daily morning skin care regimen. You are welcome to apply your makeup over that for added benefit. Skinstore has a wide selection of sunscreens to offer for all skin types. One of our favorites is SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50.
There is this little known mineral makeup brand that is truly unique. The Illuminare Mineral Foundation line sets themselves apart from all the others. It is oil-free and has a semi-matte finish. All three finishes contain a natural non-chemical SPF and are free of all oils, fragrance, artificial dyes and gluten. The truly amazing part of this makeup line is how wonderful your skin looks. It gives such a natural no-makeup look to your skin while providing coverage. This stuff is amazing, Enjoy!
