Alchimie Forever is an effective yet gentle skincare brand. This family owned and operated brand is great for all skin types, but especially wonderful for sensitive skin. All of the products in the brand are hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic, paraben-free, gluten-free, soy-free, dye-free and safe for pregnant and nursing women (except for Brightening Peel). They have recently added a new product that addresses hyperpigmentation and sun damage, just in time for summer. The Alchimie Forever Pigment Lightening Serum combines blueberry, vitamin C and E to fight off free radical damage and rejuvenate the skin. This serum may be used morning and evening underneath a moisturizer. You will see noticeable improvement in skin tone and redness relief. It will reduce appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. This would be a fabulous addition to any skincare regimen.
NIA24 is known for addressing hyperpigmentation with the key ingredient Pro-Niacin. This same star ingredient is in NIA24’s new product the Rapid Depigmentation Serum as well as Vitamin C and Hexylresorcinol. Hexylresorcinol is a skin brightening enzyme that helps to even out blotchy skin tones and age spots by breaking up excess melanin. The Rapid Depigmentation Serum will help to even out skin tone and reduce existing hyperpigmentation while evenly distributing the pigment in the skin for a more even appearance. The serum is very light-weight and can be used in combination with any other treatment products that you may be using. It is recommended to apply either the NIA24 Skin Strengthening Complex or Intensive Recovery Complex over top of the serum for added benefits.
Of course we would suggest a great SPF to use with your brightening products to help keep your skin healthy and protected. We like the NIA24 Sun Damage Prevention Mineral Sunscreen with SPF 30 which is lightweight and oil free; perfect for daily use.

Indoor tanning salons are just as popular as fast food restaurants in some cities. They promise the bronzed beauty that comes with a great tan. I am guilty of baking myself in tanning beds for years. I would listen to the teenage girl that worked at the tanning salon tell me how the UVA rays from the beds were safe and it was even smart to get a base tan in the summer to help protect my skin from the Sun. I knew better than to believe all this nonsense, but I just wanted to look tan. Now, I am older and wiser, but I have awful sun damage as a result of my poor tanning decisions. I no longer tan and am diligent about wearing proper SPF. I wish I knew all the harmful effects that I know now.
Here is some real and true information about tanning beds. UVA rays are not safe. In fact UVA rays penetrate deeper into your skin, cause melanoma and premature aging. A typical tanning bed emits about 95% UVA rays and about 5% UVB rays. The UVA rays from a tanning bed are 12 times stronger than what we are exposed to from the Sun. The reason for this is because UVA rays make the skin darker faster. They also cause sagging skin, skin cancer and eye damage, including ocular melanoma (eye cancer). This information was never mentioned while I was shelling out money for my tanning service. I wish I knew that just one tanning session increased my chances of getting melanoma by 20%. And each additional session within that year tacked on another 2% risk. Tanning beds have been moved to “carcinogenic to humans” category which is the highest risk category for cancer. Shockingly, there are more cases of cancer due to indoor tanning than cases of lung cancer due to smoking (study by JAMA dermatology). No, tan is worth the risk. There are plenty of great self-tanners available now that are a safe alternative to tanning. Your future, older self will thank you! A couple of our staff favorites are Kate Somerville360 Body Self Tanning Towelettes and Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Blow Pads.

Spices are not just for cooking, many skincare companies utilize spices, or the oils obtained from them, in the formulation of their products. Here are just a few with notable skincare benefits.
• Fennel – Fennel’s ability to decrease irritation and redness make it a great ingredient for sensitive skin. It also has the capability to tone and tighten making it a useful tool for mature skin and a great addition to an eye cream. The Peter Thomas Roth Instant FirmX Eye contains fennel. With its ability to stimulate lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness, Fennel is a useful firming agent.
• Cloves – These little evergreen tree buds have been used all over the world for centuries. Clove oil is an effective antimicrobial agent and is often added to cleansing products such as Eve Lom Cleanser. Additionally, cloves are rich in Vitamins A and C, two very effective antioxidants.
• Cinnamon – Individuals with oily or acne-prone skin will benefit from this yummy ingredient due to its antibacterial and naturally astringent properties. Juara Sweet Black Tea and Ginger Mattefying Moisturizer is a great product that makes use of its benefits. This refreshing gel-cream combines the anti-aging benefits of fermented sweet black tea with the shine-reducing and pore-purifying properties of ginger and cinnamon for a luminous matte finish. Completely oil-free, it immediately reduces shine while at the same time helping delay and reverse signs of aging.
• Pepper – Pepper is a popular ingredient in body products due to its ability to boost circulation. Bliss Blood Orange and White Pepper Sugar Scrub also have analgesic properties and can be used to soothe muscle aches. Aromatherapy Associates De-Stress Muscle Gel is another great muscle soother.
• Turmeric – This is a popular ingredient because of its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is also a powerful antioxidant and can help with the lightening of hyperpigmentation. For a more in-depth look on Turmeric, see our previous blog. [“Hot Ingredient – Turmeric”]

A retinol based product can be found in almost every beauty line available and it easy to see why. Retinol, or vitamin A, has the ability to increase collagen production. It can be used to treat a range of skin conditions from acne to visible signs of aging.
Retinol gently exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin from the surface and helping reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scarring and dark spots. Retinol is a great addition to any skincare routine for many skin types but be aware you should allow 4-6 weeks for results to show noticeable and lasting results.
As many consumers are aware, the largest downside of retinol products is increased photo sensitivity. Because the retinol acts as an exfoliant, it exposes skin to environmental elements. It is proven that retinol does increases risk of sunburn but not an increase in development of skin cancer. It is high recommended that consumers stop tanning in UVB tanning beds while using retinol products. Users who are cautious of sun exposure or know they may be exposed can mix their retinol products with an SPF product or restrict their usage primarily at night.
Typical side effects include redness and photosensitivity. Overuse of Retinoid can cause peeling, shedding or excess dryness so it suggested that users limit their use to 3 times a week until the symptoms subside. Stop using retinol based products if skin becomes irritated, itches or burns. Active ingredients like retinol or other acids can cause activity like a light tingling sensation but should never burn. This said vitamin A or retinol products are not recommended for pregnant women or clients with skin conditions like Eczema and/or Rosacea.
Like any skincare product, if used correctly retinol can offer amazing results. Some of our retinol favorites include SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.5 or SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0 for expereinced retinol users and SkinMedica Retinol Complex 1.0 .
