Spices are not just for cooking, many skincare companies utilize spices, or the oils obtained from them, in the formulation of their products. Here are just a few with notable skincare benefits.
• Fennel – Fennel’s ability to decrease irritation and redness make it a great ingredient for sensitive skin. It also has the capability to tone and tighten making it a useful tool for mature skin and a great addition to an eye cream. The Peter Thomas Roth Instant FirmX Eye contains fennel. With its ability to stimulate lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness, Fennel is a useful firming agent.
• Cloves – These little evergreen tree buds have been used all over the world for centuries. Clove oil is an effective antimicrobial agent and is often added to cleansing products such as Eve Lom Cleanser. Additionally, cloves are rich in Vitamins A and C, two very effective antioxidants.
• Cinnamon – Individuals with oily or acne-prone skin will benefit from this yummy ingredient due to its antibacterial and naturally astringent properties. Juara Sweet Black Tea and Ginger Mattefying Moisturizer is a great product that makes use of its benefits. This refreshing gel-cream combines the anti-aging benefits of fermented sweet black tea with the shine-reducing and pore-purifying properties of ginger and cinnamon for a luminous matte finish. Completely oil-free, it immediately reduces shine while at the same time helping delay and reverse signs of aging.
• Pepper – Pepper is a popular ingredient in body products due to its ability to boost circulation. Bliss Blood Orange and White Pepper Sugar Scrub also have analgesic properties and can be used to soothe muscle aches. Aromatherapy Associates De-Stress Muscle Gel is another great muscle soother.
• Turmeric – This is a popular ingredient because of its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is also a powerful antioxidant and can help with the lightening of hyperpigmentation. For a more in-depth look on Turmeric, see our previous blog. [“Hot Ingredient – Turmeric”]

Dr.Dennis Gross Hydra-Pure Vitamin C Brightening Serum unites three forms of Vitamin C with a strong peptide to provide supreme brightening and anti-aging benefits. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that plays a vital role in the production of collagen. You will see an improvement in sun damage, an increase in skin’s luminosity and a visibly firmer, more youthful appearance. For best results use daily followed by your favorite moisturizer. As with any Vitamin C serum you always want to wear SPF, as this product will make skin more sensitive to the sunlight.

A retinol based product can be found in almost every beauty line available and it easy to see why. Retinol, or vitamin A, has the ability to increase collagen production. It can be used to treat a range of skin conditions from acne to visible signs of aging.
Retinol gently exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin from the surface and helping reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scarring and dark spots. Retinol is a great addition to any skincare routine for many skin types but be aware you should allow 4-6 weeks for results to show noticeable and lasting results.
As many consumers are aware, the largest downside of retinol products is increased photo sensitivity. Because the retinol acts as an exfoliant, it exposes skin to environmental elements. It is proven that retinol does increases risk of sunburn but not an increase in development of skin cancer. It is high recommended that consumers stop tanning in UVB tanning beds while using retinol products. Users who are cautious of sun exposure or know they may be exposed can mix their retinol products with an SPF product or restrict their usage primarily at night.
Typical side effects include redness and photosensitivity. Overuse of Retinoid can cause peeling, shedding or excess dryness so it suggested that users limit their use to 3 times a week until the symptoms subside. Stop using retinol based products if skin becomes irritated, itches or burns. Active ingredients like retinol or other acids can cause activity like a light tingling sensation but should never burn. This said vitamin A or retinol products are not recommended for pregnant women or clients with skin conditions like Eczema and/or Rosacea.
Like any skincare product, if used correctly retinol can offer amazing results. Some of our retinol favorites include SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.5 or SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0 for expereinced retinol users and SkinMedica Retinol Complex 1.0 .

Pearl has been notably used in beauty and skincare products for centuries. Often referred to as mother of pearl cream or concha da necar, its use can be traced back as early as the Ming Dynasty of ancient China and Inca Empire of Peru.
There are two main ingredients found in pearl which make it exceptional for use in beauty and skincare products. Conchiolin, an organic protein helps to remove dead skin cells and deep clean pores. While Nacre, also an organic protein, contains a unique iridescent quality. Nacre has a whitening or brightening effect, reducing the appearance of uneven pigmentation and scaring. The combination of these two ingredients makes the skin look more youthful and vibrant.
Some of our faves include:
Pevonia Timeless Cream which contains Pearl, Caviar, Escutox, and Retinol for maximum brightening and anti-aging benefits.
RevaleSkin Illuminesse Brightening Complex to help even skintone and improve radiance. For skin with mild to moderate pigmentation, this plant-based antioxidant complex balances uneven skin tones and restores radiance. This 98% natural formula helps brighten dull, discolored skin.
For an instant cosmetic fix we love Colorescience Precious Pearls Collection that contains the sheerest trace of color with a luminescent backlit glow, that will calm and correct complexion irregularities while restoring a more youthful look.

If you’re like me, you may have sensitive skin. I made the mistake of using Retin-A years ago because I had heard of all the amazing benefits of retinol. It was simply too harsh for my sensitive skin and I quickly stopped using it.
So now what? I still want to reduce these fine lines and hyperpigmention!
Luckily, when I joined NIA24 as the company’s Vice President earlier this year, I was introduced to Intensive Retinol Repair. NIA24’s skin experts explained to me that Intensive Retinol Repair contains 5% of the active ingredient Pro-Niacin® which delivers niacin to the skin cells and promotes healthier looking skin.
I immediately started using the product. Sure, I was skeptical. I didn’t want the drying and irritation I experienced when I used Retin-A.
After just 2 weeks, I noticed my skin was smoother and my skin tone was more even! And I didn’t have any of the horrible, itchy dryness. After about a month, fine lines that bothered me before were gone!
So how does Intensive Retinol Repair work? This amazing product:
-Stimulates the repair of your skin’s DNA and undoes some of the damage caused by the sun, creating healthier skin.
-Enhances energy metabolism and skin cell turnover.
-Promotes the release of leptin, a natural skin repair hormone that helps to reduce existing hyperpigmentation.
-Stimulates a skin receptor that decreases future hyperpigmentation.
But don’t take my word for it! In a seven-site, physician-directed trial, 140 patients with mild to severe sun damage used NIA24 products featuring Pro-Niacin™ daily and:
-90% reduced their in hyperpigmentation
-82% improved skin texture
-81% improved skin tone
-80% increased skin smoothness
-68% reduced their fine lines and wrinkles
-53% improved firmness
And who better to get an endorsement from than The National Cancer Institute who recently chose the Pro-Niacin™ molecule for development as a potential skin cancer prevention agent.
Start the New Year with new skin today!
The end of summer justifies a new wardrobe, haircut and makeup…and as the canvas for your new Fall hues, your skin deserves some attention, too. Whether your goal is to reverse the effects of too much fun in the sun or prevent those dreaded dark spots from cropping up in the first place – with the ever-evolving assortment of available pigment-correcting products out there, what makes a pigment corrector stand out from the bunch? One that lightens age spots, discoloration from sun overexposure, melasma and acne scarring without causing skin irritation. The following five skin lightening mechanisms to look for include:
1. Beta White – a skin-brightening peptide designed to address both genetic and environmental causes of hyperpigmentation. Peptides are specific amino acid sequences that mimic the natural signals of cell communication and repair so their biological properties can target different areas – in the case of Beta White, that property is skin lightening. Beta White produces results without irritation as it is identical to the skin’s own structure and composition. Studies show that after only 4 weeks, 87% of subjects felt their skin was more uniform and after 8 weeks, 100% noticed their complexion looking more evenly pigmented.
2. Chromabright – a brightening molecule with the capacity to inhibit the activity of skin-darkening enzyme reactions and performed comparably to Hydroquinone in clinical studies.
3. Licorice – a treat for your taste buds and your complexion that offers an additional defense against dark spots caused by enzyme reactions.
4. Vitamin C – in the form of Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a skin lightening agent and multi-tasking antioxidant that also fights wrinkles and elasticity loss by helping to optimally nourish collagen.
5. Lactic acid – a natural exfoliator that promotes a more even skin tone by speeding fresh new skin to the surface while simultaneously brightening surface-level skin.
From a peptide at clinical strength to a botanical extract, this diverse skin lightening cocktail is setting a new standard for results that can be achieved by pigment correctors. For the benefits of all five dark spot-correcting ingredients together, try HydroPeptide’s Even Out Skin Brightening Pigment Corrector. Spice up your Fall beauty routine with radiant, even toned skin and look flawlessly chic season after season!
If you ask a woman what the biggest problem is that she faces regarding her skin you’ll most likely hear “hyperpigmentation” every time. Hyperpigmentation can be caused by hormones, post inflammatory acne, or sun induced (photo damage) and is one of the most difficult to treat. Hyperpigmentation is hard to treat because the Melanocytes in our skin which produce Melanin have a great, long lasting memory. Melanin is what pigments our eyes, hair, and skin. So every time melanin is produced by the cell it’s the color of the darker pigmentation. Every 28 days when your cells turn over it is recreating the dark melanin in its memory bank per say.
So I know you’re asking… “What can I do to break this cycle?” The key is to use the right ingredient to change the melanin back to the color they should be. Kojic acid is an awesome ingredient and is derived from fungi. Kojic acid helps to stop the production of melanin in your skin and is a great all natural approach to clearing up pigmentation. Another great ingredient is Ascorbic acid or better known as Vitamin C, this ingredient is rich in antioxidants and is commonly used topically on the skin. This ingredient works by gradually fading the appearance of pigmentation on the skin. Both of these ingredients are very effective and will give you the clear skin you desire.
We highly recommend SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF to help with hyperpigmentation. Phloretin CF represents a new class of preventive and corrective topical antioxidant treatment. After five years of extensive research, SkinCeuticals developed this patent-pending breakthrough technology combining the newly-discovered, broad-range power of Phloretin with Vitamin C and Ferulic Acid in a biodiverse formulation to divide and conquer sources of damage at every level. Phloretin CF, a broad-spectrum treatment, protects against not only free radicals, but the range of other reactive molecules known to cause damage and DNA mutations among the integral cell types. In addition, it corrects existing damage by stimulating the synthesis of essential proteins and fibers and accelerating cell turnover. The result — a strengthened support structure on the inside and a more youthful, firm, radiant appearance on the outside. Melasma also known as the mask of pregnancy is hyperpigmentation that forms patches of brown to gray-brown patches on the face. It’s most often found on the cheeks, bridge of nose, forehead, chin and above the upper lip. Melasma occurs when the color making cells in the skin or melanocytes produce too much color. If you have a darker complexion you’re more prone to melasma because you have more active melanocytes than someone with a lighter complexion.
Common causes include:
Sun exposure: Ultraviolet or UV light from the sun stimulates the melanocytes. Even just a small amount of sun exposure can make your melasma return after fading. It often gets worse in the summer with continued sun exposure.
Change in hormones: Melasma is common in pregnant women, is often called chloasma or the mask of pregnancy. Birth control pills can also trigger melasma.
Not all hyperpigmentation is Melasma. To be properly diagnosed, you will need to see a Dermatologist.
Hydroquinone-this can be found in a 2% strength OTC or 4% strength with a prescription, to help lighten the skin.
Tretinoin- a prescription vitamin A or all-trans retinoic acid enhances skin lightening.
Professional treatments that may help include: chemical peels, microdermabrasion and dermabrasion.
Melasma is a difficult skin condition to treat because sun exposure, the main cause, is present in our everyday lives. It’s very important to wear sunscreen every day and reapply every 2 hours. If you know you will be in the sun for long periods of time, be sure to wear a wide brim floppy hat for more coverage.
We recommend PCA SKIN Pigment Gel and Colorscience Pro Sunforgettable Mineral Sun Protection Brush SPF 50 for best results.
