Most women will freak out with the thought of shaving their face. What? My hair will come back darker, thicker and rougher, not to mention shaving is for men not women. I can’t do that. Well, I have some important points for women to consider when shaving is concerned. First and foremost, that train of thought is based on myths. In addition, shaving is actually an anti-aging technique with solid science behind it. I know? Super shocking news!
The first myth is if hair returns thicker, darker, rougher, and the answer is no. Shaving does not change the thickness of the hair, color or rate of growth. Shaving has no effect on the bulb of the hair where hair is actually produced. Shaving facial hair gives the hair a blunt tip. The tip might feel “stubbly” for a time as it grows out. During this time, the hair may appear darker and thicker but it’s not according to www.mayoclinic.org. The feel of thickness is from the blunt tip left behind by shaving and the darkness is your natural hair color that hasn’t been exposed to the bleaching effects of the sun and environment. However, this is only factual if you are shaving dark, thick hair. Most women have peach fuzz. The real name is Vellus hair. This type of hair covers most of our bodies and it is naturally soft & light. This is the hair we want to get rid of by shaving. If you have more dark and thick hair, you may want to seek out other options, such as laser hair removal.
What are the benefits of shaving for women? A few of the benefits of shaving your face, also known as at home Dermaplaning, include exfoliation, collagen stimulation, deeper product penetration, and smoother make up application. What is Dermaplaning? You may have never heard of Dermaplaning, but I bet you’ve seen the effects. Celebrities have this procedure done all the time. It’s a skin procedure that involves using a sharp tool to exfoliate the surface of your skin, while also removing small, fine hairs. Basically, an esthetician or dermatologist will take a small scalpel and very gently scrape the surface of your skin using light, feathering strokes. Dermaplaning’s purpose is to give your skin an immediate exfoliation for a luminous glow that lasts a week. Physicians might recommend dermaplaning to anyone who is about to undergo a laser treatment or deep chemical peel, to allow the products to penetrate more deeply into the skin. Plus, the light “shaving” motion gets rid of light facial hairs while it exfoliates.
Shaving your face has similar results as dermaplaning and it’s been practiced for a very long time. In fact, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe were known to shave their face and attribute their agelessness to the shaving. Generally, men look younger as they age because they shave on a consistent basis.
Let’s chat a bit about technique of shaving. There are three options when it comes to razors:
1) a normal women’s razor for your legs (just make sure it’s not actually the one you use on your legs)
2) a women’s facial hair trimmer
3) an eyebrow shaper
Any of these modalities will work. Start at the top of the ear and shave going down to jawline and towards the nose, to get the whole cheek, jawline, chin, and upper lip. Always use downward strokes, very little pressure and your skin should be clean and dry. Pull the skin taught and shave with short strokes with the razor at a 45 degree angle against the skin. Keep in mind; you only need to do this twice a month to see results. After shaving, follow up with your serum, moisturizer, and spf.
After you’ve shaved a few times and your skin is adjusted, try getting a little more aggressive with a light application of Alpha Hydroxy Acid or Enzyme peel for deeper penetration.
Now, let’s talk about shaving products that would be beneficial to have during your shaving time. The Art of Shaving specializes in shaving products. They have full size kits that include everything you would need to shave. They are gender friendly and effective. I would recommend The Art of Shaving Full Size Kit in Lavender. Most women love the smell of lavender and lavender essential oil. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, this kit has the before, during, and after products that will keep your skin soft and supple. It even comes with a pure Badger shaving brush that generates rich and warm lather.
BOO! Happy All Hallows Eve! While your bunnies, ghosts, princesses and pirates are out trick-or-treating, treat yourself to a masque of your own, here are our favorite skin treats… no tricks involved:
Oily and acne-prone skin types benefit from a weekly purifying masque. Purifying masques help to minimize the appearance of large pores while drawing out impurities and excess sebum. A purifying masque is typically clay based and contains anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. We recommend Astara Blue Flame Purification Mask.
Everyone should exfoliate! An exfoliating masque will remove dead skin cells from your skin. Exfoliating masques provide brightening, purifying and tightening benefits. After exfoliating, treatment products will penetrate deeper into the skin. We suggest June Jacobs Perfect Pumpkin Peeling Enzyme Mask.
Dull skin can benefit from a brightening masque. Brightening masques are infused with glow-getting antioxidant ingredients like berry extracts and vitamin C. We love Alchimie Forever Kantic Brightening Moisture Mask.
Dry skin loves a hydrating masque. Hydrating masques contain moisture-driving ingredients like sodium hyaluronate, essential oils, kernel oils and shea butter which soften the skin. Some of our faves are June Jacobs Age Defying Hydrating Masque and SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque.
Have a blast masquing! No costumes necessary!

The idea of getting a peel can be scary to newcomers — it’s easy to visualize painful, peeling, flaky skin, or think of what happened to Samantha on Sex and the City. But we at Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare know that our patented two-step Alpha Beta Peel is the easy, quick, pain-free way to get firmer skin, smaller pores, and a radiant complexion. Did you know, though, that it’s also the safest way to exfoliate your skin?
The benefits of regular exfoliation are hard to ignore — brighter skin, decreased skin imperfections (including fine lines and wrinkles!) and a clearer, healthier complexion are just a few perks — but it’s easy to overexfoliate when using a scrub. Harsh scrub products can be abrasive on the skin, leading to irritation and redness. What does Dr. Gross recommend? He doesn’t advise physical or mechanical exfoliation because he’s found microexfoliation to not just be gentler, but more effective.
The Alpha Beta Peel requires two steps to work – the surface refining first step and the deep treating second step work together for an immediate difference in your skin with no downtime. Get Dr. Gross’ #1 clinical procedure in the comfort of your home daily! Choose between Original, for sensitive skin or first-time peel users, or Extra Strength, for normal to less sensitive skin.

BBQ’s and pool parties go hand in hand during these summer months. While most men don’t even flinch about summer time, women tend to go into full detox mode. All we need is a little bit of preparation tips & tricks to get the ball rolling and come prepared when that pool party arrives. So instead of biting your finger nails and becoming a detox princess, follow these guidelines…
After you’ve marked your special date on your calendar, the preparation can begin. You know you will be in a bikini soon, so what immediately comes to mind? Maybe we need a little bit of color, or spot treatments to concern areas? With the few weeks leading up to the event, we can exfoliate our body just like our faces a few times a week. This will get rid of all of the dead skin on the surface so that when we are ready to reveal our skin it will look healthy and smooth. In between exfoliation sessions, don’t forget about shaving. I know I am probably not the only one who likes to borrow good men’s shaving products. Grab some Jack Black Supreme Cream Triple Cushion Shave Lather. I say if it’s strong and comfortable enough for a man, then it would be bliss for a woman. After you shave, don’t forget to prevent and protect your freshly shaved areas with some ingrown hair/ bump fighters! For a suggestion, try Whish Flawless Bump Fighter.
The next prep step would be to pick out and apply a self tanner. We want to look golden and sun kissed at our events but without harm from the sun! We suggest that you take a look at the following self tan products:
– Jan Marini Bioglycolic Sunless Self Tanner
– Decleor Aroma Sun SPF 8 Hydrating Self- Tanning Milk
– Pevonia Self- Tanning Emulsion
– TanTowel Plus Full Body Self- Tanning Towelettes
They are all different options for different types of needs. They range from creams, to lotion/milk textures and even gel textures. These will get you glowing quickly and what a way to help slim up your figure too! Now that you are pretty much ready to flaunt your pool party body and smile, there are a few other items you should remember to stay flawless. Be sure you remember to always wear your preferred SPF products for the face and the body! If you need, there are always some relaxing and soothing after sun products as well.
You can also protect your hair during these weekend water & sun celebrations with products like:
– Alterna BAMBOO UV Color Protection Vibrant Color Shampoo
– Rene Furterer Protective Summer Fluid
– Phyto Protective Sun Veil
Well I think we’ve pretty much covered as much as possible on how to prepare from head to toe. You should feel tan, toned, smooth and fit to stun when you arrive at your summer soiree. Oh, and don’t forget those designer shades!
Spring has officially arrived — it actually hit the 70° mark the other day! I was excited to finally wear a dress without stockings…until I realized how unprepared my skin was. Thanks to being totally bundled up all winter, my skin looked pasty, sallow, and dull.
Enter Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare. Their Alpha Beta Glow Pads are my go-to in the summer, but for now, I wanted something a little less pigment-packed and a little more gradual. The brand new Alpha Beta Glotion for Body fit the bill. NYC dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross created this lightweight, oil-free body moisturizer for his patients who wanted healthy, glowing skin that was also refreshed and hydrated. Not only does Glotion for Body provide natural, time-released color with Encapsulated DHA, but it provides anti-aging, exfoliating benefits with Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid. These two acids help resurface the skin for more youthful texture and tone while improving absorption of Hyaluronic Acid, locking in moisture. The formula even contains Caffeine, which is known to help firm and tone the appearance of skin. All these benefits combined will ensure skin perfectly prepared for warmer weather and higher hemlines.

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical form of exfoliation that removes the uppermost layer of dead skin cells. For best results, it is recommended that you get a series of treatments and to use anti-aging topical products in conjunction. Microdermabrasion diminishes the appearance of lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores and it helps to even out skin tone and texture. This type of treatment is not recommended for those with sensitive skin.
Microdermabrasion used to just be available in spas and dermatologists offices, now they are available for at-home use. PMD Personal Microderm Tool Kit is one of our favorites. This little device polishes and smoothes skin and allows you do a complete series of treatments in the comfort of your own home. PMD comes with two different grit attachments so you can choose the level of your exfoliation. Get ready to have radiant, flawless skin in a matter of weeks!

Many of our customers ask, “What is a peel and how do I know if I would benefit from one? “ Here are some helpful tips if you find yourself asking to peel or not to peel?
A peel is a deep exfoliation treatment that results in smoother, more even toned skin. Peels help address concerns such as lightening hyperpigmentation, fading acne spots and restoring radiance to dull, lackluster skin. Peels come in various forms and strength. Some are of liquid form and have high percentage active ingredients and are applied by and licensed esthetician or dermatologist. Others are thicker in texture, like a masque and are left on for a specified amount of time. Lastly, the easiest of use are peel pads that are swiped on the skin. Peels range in strength from mild to aggressive. The milder peels tend to have no down time and can be used at home. While more aggressive peels can result in temporary redness and flaking and are in office procedures.
Everyone can benefit from exfoliation. If the youngest, freshest skin cells are always on top you will have radiant, glowing skin. Plus, you maximize the effectiveness of your other skin care products when your skin is exfoliated. Without exfoliation your skin develops a layer of dead skin cells creating a “wax paper” effect not allowing your other skincare products to penetrate through.
Do start slow. Start at a low strength and leave on for a short time. You may be more sensitive the first few times, remember you can always build up later.
Do them at night, if possible. You’ll want to avoid sunlight after a peel. Fresh, baby cells are more likely to burn. If you must do a peel during the day, ALWAYS use an SPF before going outside. Sunlight can accelerate the effects of acids. Don’t risk over-exposure that may cause hyperpigmentation.
Do moisturize. You’ll want to put some hydration back in to your skin as some peels may be drying. Moisturizer will also help soothe your delicate new skin.
Don’t be afraid to say enough is enough. If you are experiencing any sensation that feels more than tolerable, take the peel off. You should feel the peel working, but it should not be so uncomfortable that you want to run for a fire extinguisher.
Don’t over-do it. Peeling should be 2-3 times a week at the most. If you tend to have more delicate skin or any sensitivity once a week is all you need. Peels should be alternated with your regular exfoliant product and not used on the same days.
Some great peels are:
Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel – This organic peel is made from organic citrus and apple juices. It helps with fine lines and wrinkles, evening out skin tone and brightening. It comes in Sensitive and Full Strength.
Kate Somerville Clinic-to-Go Resurfacing Peel Pads – These pre-soaked pads help diminish the appearance of pore size, improve firmness, and have calming ingredients such as Sage & Myrtle.
Suki Renewal Bio-Resurfacing Peel – This peel is rich in acids as well as botanical enzymes. This will help to really decongest skin, reduce the appearance of blemishes and boost collagen.
June Jacobs Perfect Pumpkin Peeling Masque – This peel helps to improve skin elasticity levels combatting the visible signs of premature aging.

Do you want to look like you went on a long tropical vacation without the burning and skin irritation? The Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad for Body may be your solution!

This innovative self tanner is the only one of its kind that exfoliates, tans, and firms the skin while smoothing out the texture, and reducing hair growth. Capislow is a natural ingredient that is effective for slowing down hair growth, so this will reduce shaving frequency and in turn help your tan last longer. You will also find caffeine and AHA’s in this product to help stimulate and firm the skin while providing that signature glow the peel pads are known for.
The application is so easy! You just open the towel and apply to your body in circular motions until the towel is dry. For best results you will want to apply the product on clean dry skin then follow with a moisturizer to help keep the skin hydrated and seal in the product. For maximum results you will want to apply 2-3 times per week. The natural looking tan will begin to develop within 1 hour, so you can quickly be on your way to gorgeous glowing skin.
