Does Cost Really Equal Quality?

Published on by

When customers call in asking for guidance on a product like a moisturizer that best suits their specific needs, there are many variables that need to be narrowed down to help the customer choose.

By the time I have a group of products ready to discuss with a customer, many times cost will be a deciding factor. I hear some of the following questions from customers on a regular basis:

• What’s the difference between drug store and department store brands versus what sells?
• I love my department store brand, why should I pay more for the brands you sell?
• Do I have to spend a lot of money to see results?

The answer to the first question is that each level of cosmetic or skin care products will have ingredients whose potency and effectiveness will vary according to the maximum dollar amount that the consumer is willing to spend. For example a moisturizer at a drug store may cost $15.00, at a department store $30.00, and at a day spa or doctors office $45 and up! Each price range sets the limit on what ingredients; the quantity of those ingredients and the quality of those ingredients that can be used to produce the product. SkinStore continually strives to provide the best products available with more than 300 premium brands typically found only in luxury spas, fine stores and doctors’ offices!

The second question is why should I pay more and graduate to the next level of product? Each of us has unique skin care concerns that can be addressed with a variety of products. In general the younger we are and healthier our skin the less we may need to spend on products to keep our skin healthy. However for some customers concerns with acne, sun damage (hyperpigmentation) or aging are not met with the average drug store or department store levels of products. This is the point where moving up to the next level of product can help you get better results. After all, where’s the savings in buying four anti aging moisturizers for $15 each from a drug store in six months time, totaling $60 when you can buy a more potent & more effective product for $45 and it will last you just as long?

The third and most important question is do you have to spend a LOT of money to see results? The answer is NO! Remember just because you’re choosing a product that is more expensive than what you have used in the past, doesn’t mean you have to choose the MOST expensive product!

SkinStore welcomes you to contact one of our many skin care professionals who are ready to discuss your unique concerns and issues. Our goal is to help guide you to the product(s) that can help you achieve your skin care goals!

Shave My Face?

Published on by

Most women will freak out with the thought of shaving their face. What? My hair will come back darker, thicker and rougher, not to mention shaving is for men not women. I can’t do that. Well, I have some important points for women to consider when shaving is concerned.   First and foremost, that train of thought is based on myths. In addition, shaving is actually an anti-aging technique with solid science behind it. I know? Super shocking news!

The first myth is if hair returns thicker, darker, rougher, and the answer is no. Shaving does not change the thickness of the hair, color or rate of growth. Shaving has no effect on the bulb of the hair where hair is actually produced. Shaving facial hair gives the hair a blunt tip. The tip might feel “stubbly” for a time as it grows out. During this time, the hair may appear darker and thicker but it’s not according to The feel of thickness is from the blunt tip left behind by shaving and the darkness is your natural hair color that hasn’t been exposed to the bleaching effects of the sun and environment. However, this is only factual if you are shaving dark, thick hair. Most women have peach fuzz. The real name is Vellus hair. This type of hair covers most of our bodies and it is naturally soft & light. This is the hair we want to get rid of by shaving. If you have more dark and thick hair, you may want to seek out other options, such as laser hair removal.

What are the benefits of shaving for women? A few of the benefits of shaving your face, also known as at home Dermaplaning, include exfoliation, collagen stimulation, deeper product penetration, and smoother make up application. What is Dermaplaning? You may have never heard of Dermaplaning, but I bet you’ve seen the effects. Celebrities have this procedure done all the time. It’s a skin procedure that involves using a sharp tool to exfoliate the surface of your skin, while also removing small, fine hairs. Basically, an esthetician or dermatologist will take a small scalpel and very gently scrape the surface of your skin using light, feathering strokes. Dermaplaning’s purpose is to give your skin an immediate exfoliation for a luminous glow that lasts a week. Physicians might recommend dermaplaning to anyone who is about to undergo a laser treatment or deep chemical peel, to allow the products to penetrate more deeply into the skin. Plus, the light “shaving” motion gets rid of light facial hairs while it exfoliates.

Shaving your face has similar results as dermaplaning and it’s been practiced for a very long time. In fact, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe were known to shave their face and attribute their agelessness to the shaving. Generally, men look younger as they age because they shave on a consistent basis.

Let’s chat a bit about technique of shaving. There are three options when it comes to razors:

1) a normal women’s razor for your legs (just make sure it’s not actually the one you use on your legs)

2) a women’s facial hair trimmer

3) an eyebrow shaper

Any of these modalities will work. Start at the top of the ear and shave going down to jawline and towards the nose, to get the whole cheek, jawline, chin, and upper lip. Always use downward strokes, very little pressure and your skin should be clean and dry. Pull the skin taught and shave with short strokes with the razor at a 45 degree angle against the skin. Keep in mind; you only need to do this twice a month to see results. After shaving, follow up with your serum, moisturizer, and spf.

After you’ve shaved a few times and your skin is adjusted, try getting a little more aggressive with a light application of Alpha Hydroxy Acid or Enzyme peel for deeper penetration.

Now, let’s talk about shaving products that would be beneficial to have during your shaving time. The Art of Shaving specializes in shaving products. They have full size kits that include everything you would need to shave. They are gender friendly and effective. I would recommend The Art of Shaving Full Size Kit in Lavender. Most women love the smell of lavender and lavender essential oil. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, this kit has the before, during, and after products that will keep your skin soft and supple. It even comes with a pure Badger shaving brush that generates rich and warm lather.

Topical Probiotics: Fact or Fiction

Published on by

We all know the immense benefits of probiotics internally. They are anti-inflammatory; mybodyfacilitate digestion and healthy bowel movements, as well as many other things. Probiotics have beneficial effects on your overall health. Now, new science reveals Probiotics help support the immune system, combat imbalance and chronic disease, and re-awaken youthful processes within the body that slow with age. However, can topical probiotics help support skin health?

Skin is an organ of elimination. We secrete toxins through our sweat glands every day. Mybody is one of the first skin care lines that believe the power of Probiotics boosts skin’s health and appearance. Their topical Probiotics are non-living molecules from body friendly bacteria.

Beneficial For All Skin-Types, Topical Probiotics Are Proven To Help:

  • Reverse inflammation and redness
  • Boost collagen for fewer fine lines & wrinkles
  • Detoxify stressed, acne-prone skin
  • Rehydrate skin for a softer, resilient texture
  • Provide powerful antioxidant activity
  • Increase oxygen for a healthy, rosy glow

Probiotics are one of the new beauty breakthroughs shown to help with clearer skin, decreased skin sensitivity, redness, and inflammation according to the American Academy of Dermatology, 2014.

Mybody bypasses the old skincare technologies associated with injury, chronic inflammation and a damaged epidermis through powerful Probiotic Bioactives.

  • Mybody Probiotic Bioactives boost skin’s natural repair response
  • Epidermis is left intact to heighten immunity and trigger healthy collagen production
  • Long term results are maximized due to minimal stress and inflammation

  • Excessive stress depletes probiotic activity and weakens cellular communication
  • Impaired barrier function increases risk of inflammation sensitivity and dryness
  • Continued damage results in thinner skin with less collagen production

MyBody products support how the body repairs, defends and heals itself for profound and healthy skin results. Formulated with a board of medical physicians and skin scientists, MyBody ingredients include clinically validated probiotics and patented formulas to manage a variety of concerns, including dryness, roughness, wrinkles, fine lines, crow’s feet, hyperpigmentation, acne, redness and puffy eyes.

For the Love of Wine

Published on by

iStock_000010892836XSmallCaudalie’s story starts in France at the heart of a vineyard with a husband and wife. They believe the vine of grapes contain exceptional powers for the skin and are used throughout the Caudalie brand. The vine naturally produces resveratrol to defend itself and provides powerful antioxidant benefits for the skin. In fact, Caudalie pioneered the use and benefits of resveratrol in skin care. Resveratrol is a natural antioxidant. Resveratrol is found in high amount in the skins of grapes and in red wine. It may stop the growth of cancer cells topically as well as internally (when resveratrol is taken internally). It also reduces inflammation in blood vessels, improves blood vessel function and keeps platelets from clumping together to form clots that could lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Because it is an antioxidant that protects cells against oxidative damage and a compound that reduces inflammation, resveratrol offers anti-aging skin benefits. Oxidative damage primarily due to sun exposure is one reason for skin aging. Free radicals produced by exposure to oxygen and sunlight damage collagen and activate enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, another protein important for youthful skin. Research suggests that resveratrol is a more potent antioxidant than idebenone, a leading pharmaceutical antioxidant. You can find resveratrol in many Caudalie facial moisturizers, eye creams and anti-aging serums. A few of our favorite Caudalie products are Vinexpert Firming Serum and Premier Cru the Cream.

Must I Mask, You Ask?

Published on by

Do you feel that your skin has lost its radiance? Do you cleanse, hydrate, and protect your skin yet your skin lacks luster and is dull? Regular cleansing will remove surface dirt and makeup, but using a facial mask regularly can make a huge difference in how your skin feels, looks, and acts. In fact, only a facial mask will replenish moisture, draw out impurities, exfoliate, and unclog pores, among many other benefits. Masks help other products work more effectively by allowing deeper penetration. Masks will stimulate blood circulation and leave your skin feeling smoother and softer.

Of course, the benefits will vary depending on the type of mask that is used. Masks can target conditions or have general benefits. Gel masks target dehydration, soothe, and plump the skin. Oatmeal masks target sensitivity, hydration, and reactivity. Clay masks target congestion, deep pore cleansing, and oil production. Cream based masks are moisturizing and plump up normal to dry skin types. Brightening masks target hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. To find which is best for you, you’ll need to know what type of skin you have and what you want to target. For example, combination skin may need a more balancing gel mask.

A customer favorite, Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask, is great for all skin types and conditions. It is hydrating, calming, detoxifying, and refreshing. It can be used under the eye to target puffiness. It contains aloe vera, cucumber, and chamomile which are healing and hydrating. It contains enzymes for exfoliation from papaya and pineapple. Brightening and lightening agents like orange, lemon, & sugar cane extract.

Generally, masks should be used 1-3 times per week.  They will usually remain on the skin for 10 minutes and then rinse. Please refer to manufacturer instruction.

Face masks are very therapeutic. If the mask is infused with aromatic essential oils like mint and rosemary, it can lift your spirit by stimulating your senses. Using a face mask should be treated as a luxury.  Set aside a bit of “me” time when you decide to give yourself a mask. Draw a bath, light some candles and celebrate your experience. Relax the body, mind, and soul. Plus, it will leave you with fabulous looking skin.

Facial masks can be applied where you need it. For example, combination skin with an oily t-zone can use a mud based mask for the t-zone and a hydrating mask everywhere else. You have the ability to have treatment control and target for your specific needs.

A facial mask takes your basic skin care routine to a new level of efficiency, enjoyment, and relaxation.
