Physical vs. Chemical Sunscreens

Published on by

There is a lot of confusion when it comes to sunscreen. One of the most common questions is, “what are the differences between a physical sunscreen and a chemical sunscreen?” Here is a quick and easy guide in the major differences in these types of sunscreens.

Physical sunscreen: Deflects the sun rays off the skin to protect it from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

-A physical sunscreen contains a zinc oxide or/and titanium dioxide.

-One of the best perks of a physical sunscreen is that is works instantly. There is no wait time between applying the sunscreen and going outdoors.

-Physical sunscreens also are more stable than a chemical sunscreen and generally safe to use.

Chemical Sunscreen: Absorbs sun rays and acts as a filter.

-A Chemical Sunscreen contains any of the following: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate.

-Not as stable and may cause irritation.

-Must wait 20 minutes after applying before going outdoors.

-Chemical sunscreens are very controversial right now and how your body absorbs these chemicals and how these chemicals are affecting our bodies in the long run.

Shave My Face?

Published on by

Most women will freak out with the thought of shaving their face. What? My hair will come back darker, thicker and rougher, not to mention shaving is for men not women. I can’t do that. Well, I have some important points for women to consider when shaving is concerned.   First and foremost, that train of thought is based on myths. In addition, shaving is actually an anti-aging technique with solid science behind it. I know? Super shocking news!

The first myth is if hair returns thicker, darker, rougher, and the answer is no. Shaving does not change the thickness of the hair, color or rate of growth. Shaving has no effect on the bulb of the hair where hair is actually produced. Shaving facial hair gives the hair a blunt tip. The tip might feel “stubbly” for a time as it grows out. During this time, the hair may appear darker and thicker but it’s not according to The feel of thickness is from the blunt tip left behind by shaving and the darkness is your natural hair color that hasn’t been exposed to the bleaching effects of the sun and environment. However, this is only factual if you are shaving dark, thick hair. Most women have peach fuzz. The real name is Vellus hair. This type of hair covers most of our bodies and it is naturally soft & light. This is the hair we want to get rid of by shaving. If you have more dark and thick hair, you may want to seek out other options, such as laser hair removal.

What are the benefits of shaving for women? A few of the benefits of shaving your face, also known as at home Dermaplaning, include exfoliation, collagen stimulation, deeper product penetration, and smoother make up application. What is Dermaplaning? You may have never heard of Dermaplaning, but I bet you’ve seen the effects. Celebrities have this procedure done all the time. It’s a skin procedure that involves using a sharp tool to exfoliate the surface of your skin, while also removing small, fine hairs. Basically, an esthetician or dermatologist will take a small scalpel and very gently scrape the surface of your skin using light, feathering strokes. Dermaplaning’s purpose is to give your skin an immediate exfoliation for a luminous glow that lasts a week. Physicians might recommend dermaplaning to anyone who is about to undergo a laser treatment or deep chemical peel, to allow the products to penetrate more deeply into the skin. Plus, the light “shaving” motion gets rid of light facial hairs while it exfoliates.

Shaving your face has similar results as dermaplaning and it’s been practiced for a very long time. In fact, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe were known to shave their face and attribute their agelessness to the shaving. Generally, men look younger as they age because they shave on a consistent basis.

Let’s chat a bit about technique of shaving. There are three options when it comes to razors:

1) a normal women’s razor for your legs (just make sure it’s not actually the one you use on your legs)

2) a women’s facial hair trimmer

3) an eyebrow shaper

Any of these modalities will work. Start at the top of the ear and shave going down to jawline and towards the nose, to get the whole cheek, jawline, chin, and upper lip. Always use downward strokes, very little pressure and your skin should be clean and dry. Pull the skin taught and shave with short strokes with the razor at a 45 degree angle against the skin. Keep in mind; you only need to do this twice a month to see results. After shaving, follow up with your serum, moisturizer, and spf.

After you’ve shaved a few times and your skin is adjusted, try getting a little more aggressive with a light application of Alpha Hydroxy Acid or Enzyme peel for deeper penetration.

Now, let’s talk about shaving products that would be beneficial to have during your shaving time. The Art of Shaving specializes in shaving products. They have full size kits that include everything you would need to shave. They are gender friendly and effective. I would recommend The Art of Shaving Full Size Kit in Lavender. Most women love the smell of lavender and lavender essential oil. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, this kit has the before, during, and after products that will keep your skin soft and supple. It even comes with a pure Badger shaving brush that generates rich and warm lather.

Topical Probiotics: Fact or Fiction

We all know the immense benefits of probiotics internally. They are anti-inflammatory; mybodyfacilitate digestion and healthy bowel movements, as well as many other things. Probiotics have beneficial effects on your overall health. Now, new science reveals Probiotics help support the immune system, combat imbalance and chronic disease, and re-awaken youthful processes within the body that slow with age. However, can topical probiotics help support skin health?

Skin is an organ of elimination. We secrete toxins through our sweat glands every day. Mybody is one of the first skin care lines that believe the power of Probiotics boosts skin’s health and appearance. Their topical Probiotics are non-living molecules from body friendly bacteria.

Probiotics are one of the new beauty breakthroughs shown to help with clearer skin, decreased skin sensitivity, redness, and inflammation according to the American Academy of Dermatology, 2014.

Mybody bypasses the old skincare technologies associated with injury, chronic inflammation and a damaged epidermis through powerful Probiotic Bioactives.

  • Mybody Probiotic Bioactives boost skin’s natural repair response

We have all been there. You spent the entire day out in the sun and are diligent in applying SPF only to discover that Quintessence Q-Sunshade Leave In Hair Conditioner and Scalp Protectant SPF 30you have a burnt scalp. I usually have a sunburn right down the part in my hair. Your scalp is fried to the point that showering and combing your hair has become a form of torture. A few days later your sunburned scalp starts peeling and you have little flakes of skin in your hair. Luckily, there has been an answer to our prayers. It is Quintessence Q-Sunshade Leave in Hair Conditioner and Scalp Protectant SPF 30. It is a broad spectrum SPF 30 that you just apply and leave in, so easy! Plus it helps protect color treated hair and condition, moisturize and nourish. I even use this on my little one; his hair is still baby fine and sparse. I tried using the spray sunscreen to protect his scalp, but it just sprayed onto his hair and not his scalp. With this leave in conditioner, I can rub it onto his scalp without him looking like a grease pit. It is a definite summer essential.

Tanning Beds: EXPOSED

Published on by

Indoor tanning salons are just as popular as fast food restaurants in some cities. They promise the bronzed beauty that comes with a great tan. I am guilty of baking myself in tanning beds for years. I would listen to the teenage girl that worked at the tanning salon tell me how the UVA rays from the beds were safe and it was even smart to get a base tan in the summer to help protect my skin from the Sun. I knew better than to believe all this nonsense, but I just wanted to look tan. Now, I am older and wiser, but I have awful sun damage as a result of my poor tanning decisions. I no longer tan and am diligent about wearing proper SPF. I wish I knew all the harmful effects that I know now.

Here is some real and true information about tanning beds. UVA rays are not safe. In fact UVA rays penetrate deeper into your skin, cause melanoma and premature aging. A typical tanning bed emits about 95% UVA rays and about 5% UVB rays. The UVA rays from a tanning bed are 12 times stronger than what we are exposed to from the Sun. The reason for this is because UVA rays make the skin darker faster. They also cause sagging skin, skin cancer and eye damage, including ocular melanoma (eye cancer). This information was never mentioned while I was shelling out money for my tanning service. I wish I knew that just one tanning session increased my chances of getting melanoma by 20%. And each additional session within that year tacked on another 2% risk. Tanning beds have been moved to “carcinogenic to humans” category which is the highest risk category for cancer. Shockingly, there are more cases of cancer due to indoor tanning than cases of lung cancer due to smoking (study by JAMA dermatology). No, tan is worth the risk. There are plenty of great self-tanners available now that are a safe alternative to tanning. Your future, older self will thank you! A couple of our staff favorites are Kate Somerville360 Body Self Tanning Towelettes and Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Blow Pads.
