The At Home Peel: Real Chemistry 3 Minute Peel

Published on by

ty002There was a day that you had to visit your local spa or dermatologist office to get a good skin peel. Those days are gone and at home peels are the way to go, if you want to bring your skincare regimen to a new level. If you’re already using great skincare products, you’re probably wondering if a peel is even necessary. Skincare products work better after a peel since the skin is freshly exfoliated and more receptive of the ingredients that are applied onto it.

One peel that we really love right now is the Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel.  This peel is a gel that is thinly applied on your face and décolleté. After just 15 seconds, dead skin begins to solidify as you massage the peel onto your skin. Once all of the gel has been worked in, rinse your face, and pat dry.

Keep in mind if you are already using an exfoliating product, there is no need to use that and the peel on the same day. In fact, we recommend that you refrain from using any retinol, glycolic, or lactic ingredients the day before or after doing the at home peel. And as always, be sure to follow up with an SPF. We do not want sun exposure to reverse the results you’ve worked hard for. We recommend that you apply this peel at night. This will allow any redness to calm before exposure to daylight.

Vitamin D and Skin Health

Published on by

The “sunshine” vitamin, also known as Vitamin D, is extremely important for skin health.  Vitamin D is well-known for its role in calcium absorption.  We know that physically, Vitamin D 12057682265_d568e9030f_zdeficiency can cause rickets, osteomalacia, skeletal diseases, metabolic disorders, cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease and many others.  It also affects skin conditions, including acne and psoriasis, both of which can be caused by an insufficient amount of vitamin D.

While hormonal balance and overall hygiene are causes of acne, a poor immune system due to low amounts of vitamin D in your system can also increase oil production in your skin cells. Acne forms when the sebaceous glands are clogged and these blocked, oil-producing cells lead to the unsightly blemishes that can afflict you at any time in your life. Sun exposure raises your vitamin D levels as your skin releases a chemical that produces vitamin D. This reduces the amount of bacteria in your system by boosting your immune system, reducing the level of acne.

For skin conditions like psoriasis, Vitamin D plays a crucial role.  The condition is associated with a poor immune system and, in certain instances, low vitamin D levels. The “Journal of Investigative Dermatology” showed that when exposed to ultraviolet-B rays, the element of sunlight that kick starts the vitamin D production system in the body, vitamin D levels increased significantly, and the symptoms of psoriasis disappeared. Similarly, a study in “Rheumatology International” also found that increasing vitamin D levels helped improve psoriasis symptoms.

Vitamin D is important in the rate of cell renewal and division.  A lack of vitamin D can lead to thinner skin that is fragile and sagging.  Vitamin D-3’s presence in your system is known to support the healing of wounds.  Some people use vitamin D for skin conditions including vitiligo, scleroderma, psoriasis, actinic keratosis, and lupus vulgaris.  Some studies have found that both children and adults with eczema are more likely to have low levels of vitamin D. Lower vitamin D levels are also linked to more severe skin symptoms. Research has found that people who have eczema and low levels of vitamin D are more likely to get infections on their skin.

Revive Your Damaged Locks!

Brittle…crunchy…dry…damaged hair.

Sound like I’m describing the condition of your hair? Well, let’s fix that! Dry hair is a common concern for many people, but thankfully it’s totally treatable.

You’re going to need a good shampoo and conditioner. I recommend the Frederic Fekkai Essential Shea Duo. This duo hydrates with Shea Butter and leaves hair smooth, supple and manageable.

Next you’re going to change your mind set of washing your hair everyday or even every other day. I’m talking washing your hair at the most 2 times per week. That’s right, you heard me- a max of twice a week, but don’t panic- this is where dry shampoo comes into play. A dry shampoo is going to become your new best friend. My personal favorite is Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk. Those with thinner textured hair and are looking for volume will want to go with Oscar Blandi Pronto Invisible Volumizing Dry Shampoo Spray. Use your dry shampoo when needed to absorb any excess oil and product build up. It will also provide your damaged locks with the proper nourishment it’s dying for.

Also you will want to find a good mask for your hair, which you’ll need to use once a week. There are a lot of good ones out there so this won’t be hard; so far my favorite has been the Alterna TEN Hair Masque.

Try to avoid any hair coloring or chemical processing for 4-8 weeks to fully let your locks rest and restore to their natural beauty.

The Last Straw: Dry Summer Hair!

Published on by

FFShampooIs your hair feeling dry and frizzy this summer? We get so busy protecting our skin from the sun that we often forget about the damage the sun can cause to our hair. Our once shiny locks can take a serious beating from the summer sun.  Chlorine can strip hair of its protective oils while the salt water of the ocean strips both hair and skin of its hydration.  As refreshing as a plunge in the pool or a swim in the ocean may be, they can both cause our hair to look and feel stripped, fried, and parched.

The summer sun does not have to be the cause of a bad hair day.  You can restore the shine in your hair by simply giving your locks some additional TLC this summer.  Frederic Fekkai PrX Shampoo and Conditioner both help repair and protect hair daily with effective care. Fekkai’s masterfully crafted repair shampoo and conditioner fortify and provide strength against damage.3 minute mask

The Frederic Fekkai PrX Reparatives 3 Minute Mask is a great product to use on a weekly basis, all year long, for a more intensive and rich hair repair treatment.  This mask protects against Keratin loss with restoring smoothness and shine.  By using this system, your hair will look beautiful during those warm and sunny summer vacations!

Quick Tip: Hydrate Dry Hands

Published on by

A huge pet peeve of mine is having dry hands, and it doesn’t seem to help that I’m constantly washing my hands or using hand sanitizer at work. No matter how much moisturizing hand cream I apply afterwards, it never seems to be hydrating enough.

So on the days it’s really bad, a little trick of mine is to use a moisturizing foot crème on my hands. These products are made extra emollient to penetrate into the thick skin on feet. AHAVA Dermud Intensive Foot Cream works fantabulously! The Dermud line is a bump up from the original AHAVA line, because it contains a higher amount of the Dead Sea mud to dramatically increase moisture levels in skin. I like to use it at night right before bedtime on my hands and feet, it’s a great hydrating treatment to do at least once a week.

Charcoal: An Ancient Secret of Beauty

Published on by

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of charcoal? Maybe BBQ, water filter, or Santa’s naughty list, it is a whole lot more than that and in this blog I will tell you beauty secrets involving charcoal that may blow you away. It is the latest ingredient to take the beauty industry by storm. Activated charcoal is charcoal that’s been treated to increase its absorbency. The use of charcoal and health goes back hundreds of years. Missionaries used charcoal to treat tetanus, typhoid, cholera, dysphoria, hepatitis, pinkeye, diabetic ulcers, Candida, dysentery, gangrene and other illnesses. It’s been used in emergency rooms at hospitals to treat alcohol poisoning and drug overdoses. Charcoal works great on indigestion, heartburn, flatulence, morning sickness, to fight bacterial and viral infections. It works by attaching to toxins in the stomach and absorbing them before the bloodstream can. The theory behind activated charcoal in beauty products is similar: It acts like a magnet to attract and absorb dirt and oil. And the experts say that theory holds water. “When dirt and oil in your pores come in contact with the carbon, they stick to it and then get washed away when you rinse,” explains cosmetic chemist Ni’Kita Wilson.

So, let’s take a look at what it does for skin. Activated charcoal draws bacteria, poisons, chemicals, dirt and other micro-particles to the surface of skin, helping you to achieve a flawless complexion and fight acne. Charcoal is not metabolized, or absorbed by the body. It can be used to treat some poisonous bites and disinfect some wounds. Activated charcoal powder is proven to adsorb thousands of times its own mass in harmful substances, which makes it a popular ingredient in facial masks. It will help with eczema, psoriasis, and many other skin conditions because of its amazing absorbency and purifying effects. It helps prevent cellular damage. It treats body odor.  This magic ingredient is found in many soap bars, beauty masques, and facial cleansers. Also, you will see this ingredient in many home remedies and recipes.

Activated charcoal can be used to whiten your teeth. The micro-porous charcoal grabs all the plaque and grime on your teeth. It has been used for hundreds of years for this purpose and yields amazing results without sensitivity or the high cost of professional whitening products. In addition, it really helps with bad breath and gingivitis.

It can be used for a total body detox. Charcoal has an impressive and time-tested record as a treatment for a variety of ailments. Current scientific research has confirmed the validity of most ancient uses of charcoal, as well as pioneering new applications. It has been shown that activated charcoal can…

  • Reduce damage caused by high cholesterol, coronary disease and arteriosclerosis.
  • Counteract pathogens.
  • Work as an antidote for virtually all drugs, chemicals and poisons.
  • Relieve intestinal complaints.
  • Extend life and correct common age-related problems.

Activated charcoal has been coined “The Universal Antidote and Detoxifier” and it is used as a recommended protocol for anti-aging and life extension benefits.

Key Ingredient: Rice

Published on by

Rice has been used for centuries as part of traditional beauty and skin care regiments in many places around the world. Recently during our Juara training, co-founder Metta was training us on the Juara Rice Facial Cleanser and she gave us a beauty tip that has been part of her culture for as long as she can remember. Briefly, she said when you rinse rice at home, take the water from the rinsed rice and use it to rinse your face and you will find that your skin is softer and smoother.

In learning about this ancient beauty tradition I found that for centuries rice has been used to ease many skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and dryness. Rice has also been used as a skin care mask when ground up finely with milk or water to create a paste that is then applied to the skin for 15-20 minutes then rinsed. Since rice contains allantoin, it also acts as an anti-inflammatory and is used for skin irritation and redness which makes perfect sense when considering the many uses in skin care products.

Learn more about rice in our key ingredient feature, and find out which products we carry by visiting our Rice section! One of our favorites is Juara Rice Facial Cleanser.

Five Quick Beauty Tips – All Day Makeup

Published on by

All of us have beauty tips that we’ve picked up along the way that have helped us out in a pinch or have provided beauty relief in a new or previously undiscovered way. Extending makeup wear is a popular subject as most of us are dashing from place to place. Look pretty as a plum all day long with these quick tips!

If you suffer from runny eye makeup change to waterproof liquid liner for extended stay put power and all day wear with no re-application.

For all day wear lashes that can last through the office, to the gym and then out to dinner waterproof mascara is your best friend. It will stay put all day and doesn’t require touch up.

Lip stain is perfect for extended wear. Unlike lipstick which is topical, lip stain will actually stain your lip with a light pigment that will last much longer than traditional lip gloss or lip stick. In a pinch, use your lip stain as blush that will stay in place all day.

Use primer before applying your foundation and your makeup will look better and stay in place through the day.

And finally, if you have oily skin, don’t reapply makeup all day, blot it with oil absorbing blotting paper. In a pinch, tear off a piece of a ladies room seat cover and blot away.
