The use of aloe vera dates back to the ancient Egyptians. They called the plant the “plant of immortality”. It was presented to dead pharaohs as burial gifts. Stone carvings still exist depicting its uses. The ancient Egyptians utilized the Aloe plant to heal infections, burns, and to clear up the existence of parasites on the body. Since those times, the use of aloe vera has expanded. We know it’s a leading therapy for sunburns; however, the additional uses of this magnificent plant may astonish you. Aloe vera is a cactus plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family. It grows in dry climates such as those found in parts of Africa and India and has been used medicinally for centuries. The plant can grow anywhere from several inches in height to several feet, depending on its growing environment. Ancient Greeks, Spaniards, and Arabs applied aloe to the body to minimize the occurrence of perspiration and body odor. During the sixteenth century, aloe made its way to the West Indies and shortly thereafter arrived in the Caribbean and America. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, American herbalists relied heavily on Aloe Vera for many of their treatments.
Aloe leaves secrete, a clear gel that when broken off from the rest of the plant that can be applied topically to heal wounds and soothe skin. The leaves of this plant contain a high percentage of water, essential oil, amino acids, minerals, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, essential fatty acids, and glycoproteins. Aloe Vera has been credited with the following capabilities: antibacterial (minimizing the presence of bacteria), antimicrobial (minimizing microbes), antifungal (minimizing the existence of fungus), anthelmintic (reduction in number of parasites and worms), anti-inflammatory (easing of swelling), antiviral (destruction of viruses), vulnerary (wound healing), purgative (performance as an aggressive laxative), and emollient (acts to moisturize and soothe).
Various studies have been conducted to examine the benefits of the aloe vera plant and it was found that aloe vera does in fact have several properties that are effective in treating a variety of skin conditions, from flaky or dry skin, cosmetic ailments, and hair and scalp problems. Aloe vera has been credited with the ability to promote cell renewal as it soothes the skin. Taken orally, it is used to cleanse and support the digestive system, infuse energy, and support the immune system. Aloe vera juice is taken internally to provide relief from common digestive issues such as irritable bowel syndrome and heartburn. It is also taken orally to treat conditions such as osteoarthritis, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes. Topical applications revolve primarily around the treatment of sunburn, burns obtained from sources other than the sun, and psoriasis.
As an antibacterial substance, it offers relief from the redness associated with acne while helping to heal breakouts. Enhancing the skin’s natural levels of moisture, aloe vera is particularly helpful to use on sensitive or dry skin. Its moisturizing capabilities have led to its use in anti-dandruff shampoos. A rich source of many vitamins including A, B, and C, it is used to brighten skin tone and minimize minor pigmentation issues. We hope you add aloe vera to your list of “must try” ingredients!

It doesn’t need to be said but here’s an easy tip. Swap at least 1 cup of the morning coffee for a glass of ice water. Not only will it wake you up but it jump starts your metabolism, helps flush toxins & curbs morning hunger pangs.
2. Get more sleep…no really.
The correct amount of sleep will do wonders for your skin (no more dark circles!), your metabolism and your spirit! So put down that iPad and hit the pillow earlier than later.
3. Eat more fruits and veggies.
Your mother was right! If you’re not keen on the green stuff, keep a small bag of carrots to nosh on at your desk or if you’re super adventurous, throw a cup of kale disguised in a banana shake. It can make a world of difference! Proper nutrition not only helps your metabolism, but your skin and brain function as well. The skin is our biggest organ and it needs to be cared for.

Winter… It comes around every year and brings us those windy, cold, and rainy days. As your skin is affected by these weather changes, so are your lips. Lips can easily become dry, cracked and even more sensitive during this time. It’s important to remember to tend to them just as you would with your normal skin care regimen especially during seasonal changes.
You can easily prevent your lips from drying by following a few simple steps. First exfoliate your lips about one to two times a week. This will remove the dry, rough skin sitting on the surface of your lips to reveal soft, smooth lips. We suggest Philosophy’s Kiss Me Exfoliating Lip Scrub. Follow up with a lip treatment or conditioner. For already damaged lips we recommend NUXE Reve de Miel Ultra Nourishing Lip Balm made from natural ingredients with a delicious taste of honey and grapefruit.
Suffering from dry, dehydrated winter skin? Here’s a tip! Adding concentrated serums to your moisturizers can double the humectant factor. Here are a few additives that can give your favorites a little boost this winter season.

Philosophy Turbo Booster C Powder is a revolutionary powder that can be added to your favorite cream or sunscreen to help fight free radicals, which are still an issue even in the winter! Vitamin C helps lighten and brighten skin as well as reverse the aging process.

Summer is the perfect time to breeze into healthfulness. There are so many ways to maintain and nourish the body, mind and spirit, while protecting and enhancing your complexion. But let’s keep it simple! Caring for skin is never as delicious as it is in the summertime, when some of our best defenses come directly from the garden and when easy is always best.
Here are some of our favorite tips to care for summer skin effortlessly.
-Staying hydrated is key in the warmer months. Eating local, seasonal fruit—like watermelon—not only provides excellent hydration, but contains crucial enzymes and nutrients for skin.
-Introducing plenty of raw vegetables to your diet gives skin a real boost. Carrots contain major antioxidants. Avocados are rich in fatty acids. Tomatoes and lemons are packed with collagen-supporting Vitamin C, another powerful antioxidant source.
-Plant butters and plant oils—including avocado and shea—are great for summer cooking, but also benefit dry skin when applied directly. Found in formulations throughout our collection, and providing a strong base for Antioxidant Crème and Intensive Repair Balm, they provide excellent hydration and an extra layer of UV protection when worn under sunscreen.
-Stirring a little coconut oil into your favorite fresh fruit smoothie, or into a hot cup of tea, can actually reduce your body’s need for antioxidants, and can help prevent damage to body tissues, and slow skin’s aging.
Think you know what’s causing your excess oil? It could be caused by seasonal transitions, hormones, or even medications. But before you make any lifestyle change, learn about the 5 common products in your daily skin care routine that may be the culprit, and find out how to control oily skin.
1. Your scrub. Over-doing it when it comes to exfoliating can rob your skin of its natural moisture, causing it to produce even more oil to compensate. There can be “too much of a good thing” with exfoliation, so I recommend using physical exfoliants up to 3 times a week, and keep your pressure light when massaging physical scrubs into your skin.
2. Your inadequate sunscreen. Although it might temporarily dry out your skin, a tan damages the DNA inside your skin cells and triggers an injury response that causes oil production to surge so your skin stays protected. Make sure you choose an SPF that’s labeled “broad spectrum” to keep UVA and UVB rays from doing damage, so oil production stays under control. And make it a daily habit, rain or shine – up to 80% of UV radiation can penetrate through clouds!
3. Your “squeaky” clean cleanser. You might think it’s helping your oil control cause, but using a cleanser that makes your skin feel dry and tight is doing anything but! The result is skin that’s stripped of its protective hydrolipidic barrier, causing it to rapidly produce more oil to compensate for what’s missing. Make sure you’re using a cleanser formulated for your exact skin type, to provide the moisture-to-oil balance it needs.
4. Your “one-size-fits-all” anti-ager. Anti-aging ingredients like retinol or peptides are meant to target skin aging concerns like wrinkles or firmness. If you have an Oily skin type, these formulas may be just too emollient. So choose an anti-aging night creme that’s designed specifically for oilier skin, and offers oil control along with anti-aging benefits, like Bioelements Oil Control Sleepwear.
5. Your oil blotters. A common pseudo-solution to remove excess oil is to blot it away – and not just with the blotting papers you find skin care aisles. I’ve heard people recommend everything from coffee shop napkins to toilet seat covers to beat an oily t-zone! No matter what you’re using to blot, it only pushes most of the day’s dirt, oil and makeup back in deep into your pores, where it causes breakouts, congestion, and even more oil. Stop oil at its source with an Oil Control Mattifier that balances oil production within the pore, and absorbs excess oil as it develops. Apply it under your makeup, before your SPF, to keep skin shine-free, and apply it over your makeup as needed for a pore-friendly solution to control oil throughout the day.
