Fall is in the air and it brings to mind many things: colorful leaves, cooling temperatures, longer shadows and, of course, pumpkin!
Not only does pumpkin smell and taste good, it is a very effective ingredient commonly used in the skin health industry. This incredible ingredient can be used as an effective mask or fermented into a “pumpkin wine” to release multiple nutrients and antioxidants that are beneficial for most skin types and conditions. The fermentation process releases additional nutrients and vitamins within pumpkin, and can be formulated into toners or applied topically to protect and nourish the skin throughout the day.
One use for pumpkin wine has been realized in Nutrient Toner by PCA SKIN, which utilizes a powerhouse of vitamins, amino acids, enzymes and alpha hydroxy acids to help refine pores and remove superficial dead skin cells.
The pumpkin enzyme is an effective proteolytic, meaning it will dissolve – or digest – protein or keratin. This mechanism of action makes it an excellent ingredient for sluggish skin conditions that typically result in an excessive amount of skin cell debris, which leads to a complexion that looks dull and uneven. Excessive cellular buildup can also impede the ability of topical products and serums to effectively penetrate the skin. By keeping the skin free of this extra buildup, products that are applied directly after the pumpkin enzyme will be able to work their way into the lower layers of the epidermis more easily.
Vitamins A and C are also ingredients found in pumpkin, both of which are essential to healthy skin function. In addition, pumpkin also contains a high percentage of naturally occurring salicylic acid, making this a great ingredient for acneic skin types as well.
Halloween is drawing near and pumpkins aren’t just for jack-o-lanterns and lattes. Pumpkins are loaded with healthy benefits. They are packed full of fiber and vitamin A. Plus pumpkin seeds are high in omega fatty acids. All of which makes this fall icon the perfect ingredient to fabulous skincare. Here are some of the amazing pumpkin inspired products that SkinStore offers.

Want a slimmer nose? Defined cheekbones? Hide your double chin? Make that forehead appear smaller? Contouring can do all of that, and more! Now, if you suffer with Acne, you are probably thinking that this won’t work for you. But not to worry, Dermablend is the #1 recommended camouflage brand by Dermatologists across the world. We are non-comedogenic and non-acneic and fragrance free. Trust, you can have a beautiful contoured face without the breakouts or heavy foundation!
When it comes to foundation, no one does it better than Dermablend. Foundation IS what we do. This contouring technique features Intense Powder Camo and especially for our friends who suffer with breakouts!
-COVER: When choosing to different foundations, you want to aim to have your highlight shade 1-3 shades lighter than your traditional foundation and your contour shade 1-3 shades darker than your foundation.
-HIGHLIGHT: Apply the Intense Powder Camo foundation highlight shade to your nose and out to your forehead, like a palm tree. Then apply under the eyes in an upside down triangle (down on cheekbones). Apply to upper lip and center of chin. Lastly, apply a small highlight line in between your jaw and cheekbone. This provides more product when blending.
-CONTOUR: Make a duck face, apply the Intense Powder Camo foundation to contour under the cheekbone from the hairline, tracing across cheekbone until just before the nose. Then apply to the jawline (and if you want to hide that double chin, then apply under the jaw on the neck as well). Then draw down the sides of the nose to give a slimmed effect. Lastly, apply from temple to temple, tracing your hairline.
-BLENDING: Everyone has their own technique. When using powder, a powder brush works great for the highlight. Beauty Blender works best for the contour. Start by blending the highlight on the nose up to the contour. Blend all highlighted areas first to the contour. Then, smooth the contour into the highlight.
-SET: Lastly, ensure you have blended every area and set with Dermablend’s Setting Powder and voila! You have a beautifully, professional contoured face!

Spices are not just for cooking, many skincare companies utilize spices, or the oils obtained from them, in the formulation of their products. Here are just a few with notable skincare benefits.
• Fennel – Fennel’s ability to decrease irritation and redness make it a great ingredient for sensitive skin. It also has the capability to tone and tighten making it a useful tool for mature skin and a great addition to an eye cream. The Peter Thomas Roth Instant FirmX Eye contains fennel. With its ability to stimulate lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness, Fennel is a useful firming agent.
• Cloves – These little evergreen tree buds have been used all over the world for centuries. Clove oil is an effective antimicrobial agent and is often added to cleansing products such as Eve Lom Cleanser. Additionally, cloves are rich in Vitamins A and C, two very effective antioxidants.
• Cinnamon – Individuals with oily or acne-prone skin will benefit from this yummy ingredient due to its antibacterial and naturally astringent properties. Juara Sweet Black Tea and Ginger Mattefying Moisturizer is a great product that makes use of its benefits. This refreshing gel-cream combines the anti-aging benefits of fermented sweet black tea with the shine-reducing and pore-purifying properties of ginger and cinnamon for a luminous matte finish. Completely oil-free, it immediately reduces shine while at the same time helping delay and reverse signs of aging.
• Pepper – Pepper is a popular ingredient in body products due to its ability to boost circulation. Bliss Blood Orange and White Pepper Sugar Scrub also have analgesic properties and can be used to soothe muscle aches. Aromatherapy Associates De-Stress Muscle Gel is another great muscle soother.
• Turmeric – This is a popular ingredient because of its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is also a powerful antioxidant and can help with the lightening of hyperpigmentation. For a more in-depth look on Turmeric, see our previous blog. [“Hot Ingredient – Turmeric”]
There are certain ingredient staples everyone should have in their daily care regimen to maintain a healthy complexion. Two of the most important are vitamin C and vitamin E; potent antioxidants, they both help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while promoting an even skin tone. When used together in a formulation, vitamins C and E take part in a synergistic relationship that provides even more health benefits to the skin than using each alone.
UV-exposure causes free radicals to be produced, which in turn attack cells’ lipid membranes, trying to get to the DNA where cell damage and mutations can occur. Since vitamin E (tocopherol) is lipid-soluble, it has the ability to neutralize these free radicals before any damage to the skin cells takes place. Through this neutralization process, however, the vitamin E becomes a free radical, requiring the water-soluble vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) to react with the vitamin E, turning it into a stable molecule once more.
Because equal amounts of vitamin C are used to neutralize the unstable vitamin E, the most effective formulations will have lower percentages of vitamin E and higher percentages of vitamin C.
Skincare line PCA SKIN® has just launched two new breakthrough products containing maximum amounts of pure 5% vitamin E (tocopherol) that boast dramatic, visible results in as little as one week of daily use. C&E Strength and C&E Strength Max contain 15% and 20% vitamin C, respectively, along with pure 5% vitamin E, offering rapid, visible results within one to five weeks of daily use.
Vitamin A (also known as retinol, Retin-A, renova, retinyl palmitate, tretinoin, ETC) is not only an excellent antioxidant, it is also cell-communicating (talks to your skin cells). When an antioxidant is cell-communicating, such as Vitamin A, it means that it helps your cells create healthier skin cells and increase the amount of support tissues like collagen and/or elastin. The body lacks the ability to produce Vitamin A, so it is important to gain Vitamin A through foods and skin care products. Vitamin A products are most recommended to individuals that have damaged skin. It is very important to make sure that Vitamin A is packaged correctly; otherwise, the product could be no good. The product should be in a closed, dark colored container. If sunlight penetrates the product it can promote problems with its efficacy. When using Vitamin A based products it is very important that you use a sunscreen daily. When using exfoliating products it makes your skin more susceptible to sun damage. Also, the sun depletes the skin of Vitamin A, which can cause sunbathers to age faster.
Some people will experience irritation from using Vitamin A products for the first time, which is completely normal. To make the best experience, start out using a Vitamin A based product 1 to 2 times weekly and gradually work your way up to 5 to 7 days a week.
Here are a few recommendations of Vitamin A based products:
As we say goodbye to summer, why not say goodbye to sun spots and uneven skin tone as well?! Dr.Dennis Gross Hydra-Pure Vitamin C Brightening Serum unites three forms of Vitamin C with a strong peptide to provide supreme brightening and anti-aging benefits. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that plays a vital role in the production of collagen. You will see an improvement in sun damage, an increase in skin’s luminosity and a visibly firmer, more youthful appearance. For best results use daily followed by your favorite moisturizer. As with any Vitamin C serum you always want to wear SPF, as this product will make skin more sensitive to the sunlight.
