When I began researching to write this article I searched online for references of men getting pedicures. The first site talked about pedicures being more masculine than most people think; ironically the website was adorned with dainty little sunflowers and a picture of women’s painted toe nails! There were several other sites in various different glamour and beauty websites talking about how men are slowly beginning to take better care of their feet. There were also numerous articles in women’s magazines giving pointers on how to give their man a pedicure at home. However there was not much from a man’s perspective for men.
Being a licensed manicurist and esthetician I wanted to give guys out there a heads up on what to look for in choosing who does your pedicure, and what products we have in case you want to do a pedicure at home. Many times women have much more experience getting these services, so guys may be at a loss of knowing what to look for and what to do.
So here are my tips and suggestions on a getting a pedicure at a salon or spa:
Make sure the business is licensed appropriately; make sure the person who does your service is licensed appropriately and displays their license.
Make sure the nail files and foot files are disposable and new. Be wary of metallic grating tools used to file callused skin off your heels!
Make sure all the metal tools (implements) have been freshly sanitized in the blue solution and stored in a clean dry place later.
Make sure your salon/spa has a cleaning journal showing when the last time your foot spa (especially ones with jets) has been cleaned and sanitized. It should be after EVERY use. Old water should be drained, debris filters cleaned, the tub rinsed, scrubbed down and rinsed again, refilled and a hospital grade disinfectant added, jets turned on to circulate the cleaner in the system, cleaner sits for 10-20 minutes, drained and dried. THEN it is ready for the next customer!
If you want to do a home treatment here are some suggestions:
Soak your feet in hot water in a foot tub or home foot spa. Essential oils such as lavender can relax, and eucalyptus or mint can stimulate. I would suggest trying Kerstin Florian Krauter Fub Salt.
After soaking your feet for 10 minutes or so you can use a foot file to file off the rough areas of skin on your feet. I would suggest trying Tweezerman Pedicure Ceramic File.
Next trim and shape your nails using nail clippers and a nail file. Toe nails are best trimmed square with a rounded or softened corner. Use a 3 way nail buffer to smooth out any nail ridges, even out the surface, and buff to shine (if you want.) Tweezerman Men’s Deluxe Grooming Kit is a great kit.
When you’re all done with the soaking, filing and trimming and have dried off your feet, use a foot cream or body butter to moisturize. Massage it into all areas of your feet. Put a little extra on and slip some socks on while the product absorbs! I suggest L’Occitane Shea Butter Foot Cream.
Don’t be afraid to take a little time out to take care of your feet. A good trimming of the nails can make your shoes more comfortable and a great foot massage can alleviate a lot of built up tension, stress and pain. The result will be feet that feel better in your shoes or boots, and look better in those summer sandals! Which ever you decide, salon, day spa or at home, be sure to put your best foot forward!
Keeping that manly sex appeal with washboard abs can make all the difference in our love lives! Recent images of Taylor Lautner and Bradley Cooper remind us daily of what we all desire to have, and work to achieve.
Some of us need to hit the gym and lose 10 or 15 pounds in order to reveal those abdominal muscles we’ve been working to tone. But what happens if we have a few stretch marks around our belly and love handles? Nothing can be more frustrating than to lose a few pounds through diet and exercise only to have stretch marks from previous pounds tarnish your new look!
Despite all the infomercials on diet and exercise, there are no miracle machines or miracle diets that target weight loss only in your gut and love handles. Adhering to a balanced healthy intake of food and regular cardiovascular exercise can help in reducing your body fat content. A regular regimen of abdominal and oblique exercises (with or without weights, machines, gadgets & gizmos) will help you build, tighten and tone muscles. As always, before starting any new food or exercise plan see your doctor for advice.
Once you’re close to achieving those results you can use these products to help minimize the appearance of stretch marks (and not just on your belly and love handles!)
Belli Stretchmark Minimizing Cream is a healing skin reparative treatment specifically formulated to decrease the appearance of existing stretchmarks. Features darutoside and registril – ingredients shown in independent clinical trials to be effective on stretchmarks of any age or from any cause.
Here’s a product review for the renowned StriVectin SD: “I bought this product in February 2009 for the first time and I am happy with it. My stretch marks are 15 years old and now they begin to disappear. My skin got firmer and thicker.”
Now that you’re all ripped out go show off your new look poolside!
There are a million different options, products and brands to choose from these days when it comes to beauty. If you are a newcomer to the industry or even one who has dabbled in the industry, it can still be an overwhelming market. It has been surveyed time and time again that one of the major factors when deciding on what products to buy, comes from either word of mouth or consumer ratings. So… my gift to all of you is a list of award winning and highly recognized products that are available on SkinStore.com. (Please keep in mind however, that if a product isn’t on this list it does NOT mean it’s not a great product! Many products are underrated and even under recognized!)
So for those who prefer to listen to their fellow beauty connoisseurs, this is just a simple list of used and loved products. Hopefully this helps when looking for new products to add to your regimen. It feels good to know where to turn to when in doubt and I’ve got you covered!
I’m always on the look out for new products that meet the needs of the men who are looking to take care of themselves. There are an abundance of skincare products, but so many of them are designed for, and marketed to women. Men’s grooming and skincare is one of the fastest growing markets! As forty has become the new thirty and we’re all living longer, you better believe we want to keep that handsome masculinity… Dad included!
After having recently tested out some products I was VERY pleased to have stumbled across products made by Pevonia Botanica. Don’t let the fancy name fool you, these products are reasonably priced, they produce fabulous results, and the items I’m recommending don’t come in pretty little pink containers that Dad will have to keep out of site from his buddies!
“Foam a small quantity between very wet palms, apply on face and neck. Work with wet fingertips. Rinse with warm water. Follow with Timeless Repair Lotion. For all skin types. Use morning and evening.”
“Wet Beard with warm water, apply the Shaving Emulsion all over the area to be shaved: The emulsion should coat the skin. Proceed with shaving. Recommended for all skin types especially sensitive skin.”
“Apply to face and neck with a cotton pad, use morning and evening.”
These products contain ingredients such as Caviar Extract, Hyaluronic Acid, Lemon Peel Oil, Vitamin E and the ever important Chamomile that all work to cleanse, repair and protect your skin. What I loved about these products is that they have a very subtle masculine, woodsy aromatic smell from the Chamomile. A very old school masculine smell but not overpowering. A definite thumbs up from me and a must have gift to make Dad feel special!
If you have blemish prone or problematic skin, then you know that finding the best acne products suited towards your skin is key! There are many products available, ranging from over the counter to doctor prescribed medications. They can be oral or topical and use numerous different ingredients to achieve desired results. This is a run down of the key acne fighting ingredients used in the most popular prevention and treatment products available on the market to date. We will start off with the most commonly known ingredients; Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid.
Benzoyl Peroxide has been proven as one of the most effective over the counter antibacterial medications used to treat acne. It draws oxygen to the skin making it difficult for bacteria to thrive. It also can help to rid the follicle of excess dead skin cells. This in turn will decrease pore blockage or the clogging that can occur in your pores.
Salicylic Acid is another ingredient found in common acne treatment products. Its main function is to kill off bacteria and also help to clear out congested pores. The acid is a beta hydroxy acid and is also used in different exfoliating products as it assists to shed off dead skin and offers anti-inflammatory properties. Also look for products containing Willow Bark Extract which is the natural form of salicylic acid.
Zinc is used in different acne products due to its assistance with regulating the production of oils and helping in keeping the pores clear. It also has properties which assist to help fight the bacteria that causes acne.
Glycolic Acid is another well know ingredient used in skin care products, it penetrates deep beneath the damaged upper layers of the skin to release the bond which holds the dead skin to the surface. In short, this ingredient is used to exfoliate the skin, help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and even out skin tone.
Mandelic Acid is an ingredient becoming more popular to current acne treatment products. This ingredient uses a slower, more even penetration into the skin which can be gentler for people with delicate skin or sensitive skin conditions. Mandelic acid is a very powerful alpha hydroxy acid which smooths away dry skin and offers anti-inflammatory benefits, as well as antibacterial benefits. This ingredient is also used to reduce fine lines or wrinkles and can help lighten different pigmentation issues.
Sulfur has been used for a very long time in acne products. It’s been recorded that it has been used to treat different skin concerns such as dandruff, warts and even dermatitis. When applying this ingredient to the skin, it causes the skins surface to dry and peel. It will help reduce oil production, prevent pore blockage, and assist in healing properties.
Hopefully this key ingredient list will help aid you in your search for acne treatment products beneficial to you!
It seems that everywhere you look today men’s grooming is all the buzz around town. Now that the male culture is more comfortable with being in tune with grooming techniques and products, we want to know more about what to do, and which products work best!
Some of us have normal to dry skin, some oily, some combination. Some guys have difficulty with shaving, irritation and ingrown hair. Others may have ongoing acne issues and, some of us approaching our 40’s and 50’s may be concerned with preventing signs of aging.
Men have just as many skin concerns as women but women get so much more product and education from the skincare industry. Not to worry! Here are some skincare 101 basics:
Be sure you wash your hands with an antibacterial soap before you begin your skincare routine. You don’t want to introduce new bacteria to skin you’re cleaning!
If you want to use a facial brush make sure you rinse it after use, dry it and store it in a dry container with air vents. If you want to use a wash cloth be sure to use a fresh cloth each time.
Rinse your wash cloth with warm to hot water (not so hot it burns!). Squeeze out the excess and place the cloth over your face for about 30 seconds to one minute. This helps to open your pores. You can also do this before shaving; it helps to open your pores, help the hairs stand up, and soften hair.
Apply your cleanser to your neck and face, avoiding eye contact.
Rinse the cleanser off with warm water and pat face dry with a clean dry towel.
Apply your toner. Apply any serums after toner has dried.
Apply your moisturizer. Moisturizer is one of the most important items, especially for acneic skin. (Most guys think if they have acne they don’t need a moisturizer…who needs moisture when you have oily skin right? Wrong! Not using a moisturizer on acneic skin can actually cause more oil! Not good!) Choosing a moisturizer can be confusing. If you need help choosing the right moisturizer please contact our helpful estheticians.
Apply an SPF 15 or higher for daily use to avoid aging and sun spotting. Apply 30 or higher for direct sun exposure for long periods of time, at least 30 minutes before sun exposure.
Remember these steps and take care of your skin now, and you’ll have less repairing to worry about later! If you have further questions about your skin concerns or products that SkinStore carries, don’t hesitate to contact us.
As men we can do the worst things with the best of intentions. Bless our hearts! How many times have we found ourselves in a pot of hot water when we bought something for that special lady in our life, only to step on some toes, hurt some feelings and offend?
As often as we may hear the ladies in our lives share their concerns about watching their figure or feeling overweight, the LAST thing to do is to go out and buy her an exercise video, cardio equipment or membership to a gym! Even if she mentioned she wanted these things, getting one of those items from the man in her life, translates to “I think you’re overweight”. Definitely NOT the message we intended, but certainly the message received.
What can we learn from this and what does this have to do with buying a gift for your mother, or the mother of your children? When I worked at an upscale cosmetic store I can’t tell you how many men came in for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.
Asking, “I need a gift, what’s the hottest new fragrance?” Or “What are all the ladies wearing?” My advice to them was simple, if you want to buy her some perfume and you don’t know what she likes, get a small basket with some bath oils, bubble bath, body bars (stocking stuffers) and get her a gift card to go with it.
Wrap the gifts and pick out a nice card. Write a special message in the card to her. Let her know you wanted to her to be able to go to the store and pick out anything (maybe perfume) that she wants. Two points to be earned:
A gift basket with some small items will show that you at least put some thought and effort into a gift and didn’t just buy a gift card with no thought at all.
Getting her a gift certificate will avoid you picking the wrong fragrance. Nothing worse than having the lady in your life give you “that stare“ and tell you this isn’t the fragrance she wears! That translates to “You don’t really know me!”
Does this mean that every gift should be perfume? Does this mean you should run out and buy a gift basket and gift card? Absolutely not! It means, before you buy something for that special lady, stop and think what message it sends to the one you love!
Spring is here and summer will be upon us before we know it! We all know what better weather means; more socializing, more trips, more days at the pool and more exposure to the sun! Before you reconnect with all of your summer buddies, make sure you put your best foot forward. No one wants to look old and tired.
Here are some great suggestions on jump starting a skin care program that can revitalize, reduce signs of aging, fine lines and wrinkles:
To significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and increase firmer skin use Menscience Anti-Aging Formula after you cleanse, before you put on moisturizer or SPF.
Once you’re back on track to cleaner, healthier, revitalized skin make sure you protect it from future sun damage and sun spotting due to harmful UVA & UVB rays. Go out and enjoy the great weather but make sure you have these two items to prevent damage and further aging:
Don’t forget to apply your sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outdoors. If you’re going to stay outside for more than 90 minutes, reapply your sunscreen every 1 ½ – 2 hours. A little bit of protection can go a long way in preventing skin damage!
There you have it. Your everyday essentials! Now get out and enjoy the great weather.
