Lowdown on the Scrub Down

Published on by

GK015As we all know, beautiful skin takes a little work.  It’s easy to be reminded that we need to exfoliate our face.  We look in the mirror each day and can easily see if there are dry patches of skin or breakouts forming on our face.  What about the rest of our body? Just because we can’t easily see the skin on our backs or behind our arms doesn’t mean that dead skin cells aren’t there.  So what do we do? Keep exfoliating. But this time include your body and not just your face.

Exfoliating the entire body has many benefits. It can prevent acne on the body and help prevent dead skin cells from clogging freshly shaved or waxed skin.  This will ultimately reduce those pesky and sometimes painful ingrown hairs. It can also leave your skin smooth, soft, and hydrated.GK013

There are several different types of scrubs out there that will do a great job exfoliating your skin. Our current favorites are from Soap and Glory.  The Soap and Glory Smoothie Star Breakfast Scrub and Soap and Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub both do the trick with sweet, fresh, and delicate fragrances.  The Soap and Glory Smoothie Star Breakfast Scrub contains oat, shea butter, and sugar.  Banana, honey, and almond extracts are added to gently moisturize the skin.  The Soap and Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub contains lime, lemon, almond oil, and brown sugar. Vanilla musk and macadamia oils leave skin smooth and delicately scented.  Simply exfoliating at least once a week will instantly improve the look and feel of your skin.

Why We Love Dry Shampoo

Published on by

alterna Dry ShampHave you ever had days when you just do not want to re-wash your hair?  It may be for the time it takes, the use of several products, or you’re just still in love with how awesome your hairstylist was able style your hair at your last appointment. We have all been there.  And this is where dry shampoo comes into play.  We love dry shampoo for many reasons. The main reason would be the time we save by just using one product to freshen our hair.  But there are a few others as well.  Dry shampoo absorbs oil, product buildup, and other impurities on our scalp.  It also nourishes and soothes our scalp during the process.  Adding volume to your hair is a breeze with dry shampoo.  Using dry shampoo also cuts down the heat damage applied to your hair. This automatically results in less damage to your hair while extending the life of your hair color.  And last but not least, it has a little magical way of extending the life of that amazing blowout or sassy style.

Alterna BAMBOO Style Cleanse Extend Translucent Dry Shampoo is an amazing dry shampoo!  The formula is in a spray can that sprays translucent.  This type of spray formula and application method prevents any visible powdery residue to remain. Alterna’s formula also has Color Hold® technology to help retain and protect your hair color. Alterna’s Dry Shampoo is available in three scents, Mango Coconut, Lemon Sugar, and Sheer Blossom.  Grab a can and join the world of dry shampoo lovers!

Hot Off the Press: Baby Foot

Published on by

bbyfootAre your feet dry and cracked?  Do they feel less than smooth?  Well, Baby Foot Exfoliant Foot Peel will take care of your feet!  The unique formula of 17 types of natural extracts allows your feet to exfoliate naturally leaving them highly moisturized.  This effective and gentle process removes the unwanted dead skin cells that have built up layer after layer. In addition, Baby Foot can improve other foot issues like: Foot Odor, Athletes Foot and Blood Circulation. So say goodbye to rough, dry, cracked soles, by using a product that really works! Baby Foot is designed specifically to remove unwanted dead skin cells from your feet. It’s effective, effortless and very simple to use.

Dead skin cells on your feet that build up over time can contribute to numerous problems associated with the soles of your feet. Dead skin cells accumulate due to pressure and friction from ordinary activities such as standing, exercising, and wearing shoes. In many cases, feet become cracked and painful from the accumulation of dead skin.

The principal ingredient of Baby Foot is fruit acid which is very gentle, when compared with other acids. The fruit acid penetrates into the layers of dead skin cells and breaks down the desmosomes which hold the layers together. By this process, skin is undamaged but peels easily away from the fresh layer beneath. After peeling, your feet are reborn just like a baby’s foot, giving you healthy, beautiful feet.

Sugar vs Salt

Published on by

A common question, when talking about body scrubs, is whether to use a sugar scrub or a salt scrub?  What is the difference?  The main difference between sugar particles and salt particles is the size of the exfoliating granule.  Sugar has smaller granules than salt.  These scrubs are suited for sensitive skin and the face.  Because of the smaller, finer granules, sugar scrubs make a gentle 6055133234_da96dcf9a3_bexfoliator that is suitable for all skin types and conditions. The glycolic acid content of sugar is another plus, helping to protect the skin against harmful toxins. Vital for the maintenance of healthy skin, this acid works to both condition and moisturize. Even for seriously rough and dry skin, sugar scrubs are great because sugar sizes come in fine, medium and course.  Sugar also, has the benefit of melting as you use it, from the heat of your skin, so you can customize the product based on your personal skin type and need.  A sugar scrub is especially beneficial for the lips.

Salt scrubs are generally more abrasive because of their sharper edges and therefore, do a better job at smoothing the rough skin of the body. What really separates salt scrubs from sugar scrubs is that they offer therapeutic, mineralization benefits. Most salt scrubs use sea salts, which are natural purifiers that remove the toxins that block the pores of the skin. It helps the skin breathe easier, promotes better circulation, tightens the skin and improves skin texture. There are many sea salts used in scrubs including: Himalayan, Mediterranean, Hawaiian and Dead Sea Salts from Israel. These various salts have different trace minerals, which include calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron. The minerals help to promote circulation, reduce the inflammatory response, and act as a detoxifying agent and general muscle relaxant.   Salt scrubs are very helpful for treating Keratosis Pilaris.

Both sugar and salt scrubs are customizable and easy to prepare from home.  Here is a fun recipe to get you started: 1/2 cup coconut oil, 1/2 cup brown sugar or salt, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Shower OilMost of us may not think to look at oils while shopping for a body wash.  I certainly never did. Then one day, I noticed how dry my skin was.  I tried more soothing and moisturizing body washes on the market. But, I saw no improvement in my skin. I decided to try the L’Occitane Almond Shower Oil.  You do not want to apply this oil to your loofah. There is no need since it will not form any suds. This oil is unique because as soon as it touches water, it transforms to a warm mild lather that gently cleanses the body.  Just add a quarter size amount of the product in the palm of your hand, gently rub your hands together, and start massaging the shower oil on your body. The scent is fresh yet delicately sweet.  The formula is quite hydrating without being greasy. The soft almond scent lingers on your skin after stepping out of the shower.  It will leave your skin feeling luxuriously hydrated. During the warmer months, you may even be able to skip your moisturizer after using this shower oil. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Caring For Your Underarms

Published on by

Let’s talk underarms. They’re the pits. They are pit-iful. They need a ton of TLC to stay looking smooth and healthy.

There are a few things you can do to prevent ingrown hairs, rashes, and tenderness when shaving your underarms. There are also a few tricks to getting a closer shave than ever before, and going longer between shaves, too!

Always shave in the shower or bath, when your skin is damp. Hot water softens the hair and the skin holds onto the hair less tightly when it’s damp. Never, ever dry shave, especially under your arms.

Always use shave cream or gel, and invest in a high quality razor. Your razor should have at least three blades and a moisture cushion around the blade. One-blade disposable razors shouldn’t have ever been made.

Because the hair under your arms grows in a circle type of shape rather than in one direction, it’s important to maneuver your blade to adjust to hair growth – always shave downwards first, then upwards, and then sideways if you have any strays. Don’t go over the area more than three times with your blade, and if you have any stubborn strays left remove them with tweezers post-shower.

Don’t apply deodorant or antiperspirant after shaving, let your skin rest overnight, or at least for a few hours. If you must use something I suggest a gentle or natural formula with soothing ingredients like aloe.

If you’re prone to getting bumps or rashes after shaving apply an aftershave gel post-shave, we like Shaveworks The Cool Fix because it’s soothing, cooling, and has glycolic acid to exfoliate the skin and prevent ingrowns.

Stay Hydrated While in Flight

Published on by

Long flights not only invade your sense of comfort, but they also aggressively deplete your levels of moisture, leaving your skin looking dull and lackluster. Here are a few product recommendations to soothe and hydrate your skin while you’re traveling:

NUXE Serum Creme Fraiche 24hr Soothing and Moisturizing Concentrate. This product absorbs nicely and provides 24 hour moisture leaving the skin toned, refreshed and hydrated all day long. Use morning and night a few days before and after you flight for prevention and maintenance.

Phytomer Marine Breeze (Souffle Marin) Energizing Oxygenating Serum.
This is a smart choice. Considering the less than great air circulating through the main cabin on a plane, this marine based serum actively neutralizes environmental aggressors and helps to defend the skin by re-oxygenating itself for a fresher appearance.

Jane Iredale Balance Antioxidant Hydration Spray.
Stow this baby in your purse and use it throughout the flight. A quick spritz and the antioxidant compound will help for your skin to resist any microbial and free radical harm.
