Philosophy Microdelivery Peel

Published on by

There’s never a dull moment at SkinStore! Our staff is always aglow! And that’s because dull, drab, boring skin is a thing of the past with Philosophy’s Microdelivery Peel! Always a staff and customer favorite, the Microdelivery Peel is a once-weekly two-step system that delivers results.

Step one is a microdermabrasion scrub that removes dead skin cells while infusing your skin with vitamin C and peptides. Step two is a lactic/salicylic acid peel that exfoliates even deeper, while reducing inflammation and unclogging pores. Since step two is layered directly over step one this is one powerful product, you can literally feel it working. But once you’ve rinsed the crystals off, your skin is left smooth, glowing and never irritated.

Do you want to give your skin a complete resurfacing without a visit to the spa? The Microdelivery Peel is exfoliator aficionado’s favorite, and we’re pretty sure you’ll love it as much as we do!

Lumps and Bumps

Published on by

When you find a lump or a bump on the surface of your skin you may wonder… What is this? What caused it? How can I treat it? Here’s a simple guide to the most common lumps and bumps that are found on the skin and how to address them:

Cysts: They appear in the form of cystic acne on the face, but are also common the back, on the legs, and sometimes on the arms. Cysts are harmless and can result due to localized infections or clogging of sebaceous glands. Cysts cause a bumpy appearance of the skin and can feel painful due to an inflammatory response. Most cysts can be extracted or dissipate on their own, some cysts may need to be drained by a dermatologist through the use of a surgical lancet. Many cysts can be treated with localized cortisone shots to reduce inflammation.

Dermatofibromas: Harmless red, purple or brown growths that are similar to a mole but can appear overnight. Dermatofibromas can be painful and feel tender to the touch, sometimes they can be itchy. The growths can be surgically removed by a dermatologist or frozen with liquid nitrogen.

Epidermoid Cysts: Epidermoid Cysts are not to be confused with cystic acne.  Epidermoid cysts are caused by blocked oil glands in the skin. Milia, which are often found around the eye area, are a type of epidermoid cyst. These types of cysts are benign, but can be unsightly. Epidermoid cysts must be extracted by a dermatologist through an incision in the skin as the sac of the cyst must be completely removed. If the discharge is forced out by squeezing the cyst, the cyst will reappear over time as the sac will remain within the skin.

Folliculitis: An infection of the hair follicles, folliculitis appears due to skin irritation caused by chemicals or physical factors such as friction, or by infection within the hair follicle itself. Folliculitis is predominant in those with a compromised immune system. Folliculitis is characterized by itchy skin, redness, irritation and a rash-like appearance. Antibiotics or antifungal medications may be used to treat folliculitis.

Keratosis Pilaris: Commonly referred to as ‘chicken skin’ or ‘KP’ Keratosis Pilaris appears on the backs of arms and on the thighs, and can also appear on cheeks, back, and buttocks. There is no known cause for KP but it’s commonly associated with dry skin.  Treatment of KP includes using rich moisturizers in conjunction with exfoliating products, such as alpha hydroxyl acids.

Lipomas: Lipomas are soft tissue tumors that are slow-growing and benign. Lipomas usually appear on the neck and back but can appear on other parts of the body as well. Lipomas have a rubbery feel, and can appear in clusters and variable sizes. Lipomas need to be removed by a dermatologist.

If you have a lump, growth, bump or irritation that you find bothersome or unsightly, consult with your doctor. Always have your moles checked to ensure that they are benign.

Beautiful Brows Revealed

Published on by

You can’t deny it; a fabulous set of brows are priceless. Nicely groomed eyebrows, not only polish off a great look, but also act as an instant eye lift. There will be no need to schedule your next waxing appointment when you follow these simple steps.

First and foremost, invest in a quality set of tweezers. Look for a slanted tip, which provides better accuracy and grip when tweezing unruly hairs. My personal favorite is the Tweezerman Slanted tweezersTweezer. FYI for all the divas out there, these tweezers also come in several different colors! How fun- I’m always on the hunt for cute new items to spice up my makeup bag!

5 Steps to perfectly manicured brows:

1. The cardinal rule- Never over pluck! This is probably the hardest of all of the guidelines. We have all been overzealous with the tweezers at one time in our life, leaving your brows sparse and over plucked. But don’t fear – there are helpful tricks to avoid this mishap.

Try filling in your brows with an eyebrow pencil first. This enables you to create your perfect shape, acting as a pattern for you to follow while tweezing. Tip- use soft, feathery strokes when penciling in your brows, this mimics the look of hair. A heavy hand will make your brows look too harsh and drawn on. By diverting attention away from areas that need to grow in, the focus remains on the hairs that need to be plucked. Follow this easy step and you’ll never be left with thin, wimpy eyebrows again!

2. Shaping- Keep in mind everyone has differently shaped brows. Some are more rounded, while others are more squared. Some have high arches and others are straight across. The key is to enhance the shape you were born with.

3. There are three parts to an eyebrow- the head, arch and tail. The head of the brow should start directly above the side of the nose. Tip- Hold a pencil parallel to the side of your nose. The pencil will land where the head of the brow should begin. Tweeze any hairs that land in unibrow territory.

4. Next, holding the pencil at the side of your nose, diagonally angle it so that the pencil crosses the iris of your eye. The pencil will fall on the part of the brow where your arch should be. Pluck hairs one by one to open up and define the arch.

5. Now, angle the pencil toward the outside corner of your eye. The pencil will land where the tail of the brow should end. Pluck any stray hairs that remain.

6. Lastly, finish off your look by applying a brow gel. I recommend Billion Dollar Brow Gel, it works wonders! The gel sets your hairs, keeping your brows polished and intact from morning until night!

Tips for Success:

-Try to avoid overarching the brow, which can leave you with a surprised or angry expression.

-Plucking too many hairs at once can leave holes or gaps in the brow. For better precision, pluck one hair at a time.

-Pick a neutral toned eye brow pencil that matches your natural hair color.

Eczema: Symptoms and Solutions

Published on by

30aEczema is a common inflammatory skin condition which is characterized by dryness, flaking, blistering, crusting, swelling, and cracking of the skin. Eczema is typically caused by factors such as skin over-sensitivity, allergies, stress, and genetic factors. Those with asthma are more likely to develop eczema. Typically eczema is treated with a topical corticosteroid cream. Eczema skin types that are prone to infections will often be treated by a mild course of antibiotics. Antihistamines (topical and oral) may often be prescribed for the treatment of eczema as well. Antihistamines reduce swelling thus reducing the irritation and itchiness associated with eczema-prone skin. Eczema can be frustrating and embarrassing, and the doctor route can get costly and is quite unpleasant (why take antibiotics and slather on smelly prescription cream when most eczema outbreaks can be treated by appropriate over the counter products) Here are some great product choices that will help to treat, calm, and prevent eczema outbreaks:

Cleansing:

Avene Professional Trixera Plus Selectiose Emollient Cleansing Gel effectively combats the 4 symptoms of very dry, atopic skin while cleansing, soothing and protecting the skin.

Toning:

La Roche Posay Thermal Spring Water contains healing properties which help to restore the skin’s barrier while providing antioxidant benefits and removing traces of hard water (which contain heavy minerals that are irritating to the skin). The Thermal Spring Water can be spritzed on throughout the day when your skin craves moisture or feels dry and irritated. The fine mist will not disturb your make up but will make your skin look fresh and hydrated.

Moisture:

Skin prone to eczema can often feel taut and dry no matter how much moisturizer is slathered on. We recommend therapeutic moisturizers with skin-building properties that not only hydrate the skin but also strengthen the skin’s barrier. ATOPALM Intensive Moisturizing Cream is a great choice as it helps to restore the skin’s barrier function while soothing and hydrating. If your skin is extremely dry, try using a balm like the Osmotics Cream Extreme Barrier Repair, it looks like butter in the jar, but emulsifies into a fine balm once you warm it up in the palm of your hand. This product will last and last, and a tiny bit goes a long way to restore your skin’s compromised barrier.

Exfoliation:

Get rid of dead, flaky skin by exfoliating regularly with a non-irritating enzyme mask. Enzymes eat dead skin cells without compromising your skin’s barrier. The Tracie Martyn Enzyme Exfoliant is a great choice as it contains enzymes as well as skin brighteners and gently resurfaces the skin without irritating.

Body:

If you experience eczema break-outs on your body, we recommend using La Roche Posay body products to address your concerns. The La Roche Posay Lipikar Syndet is an outstanding non-drying foaming body wash that cleanses without irritation and neutralizes drying effects of hard water. The La Roche Posay Lipikar Balm AP is a rich hydrator that soothes the skin while providing dry-skin relief and hydration to last all day.

I hope these suggestions help! While eczema can not be cured you can often easily control it with soothing over-the-counter skin care products. And as always, if your skin condition worsens or becomes intolerant to over-the-counter products, consult your doctor for other treatment alternatives.
