The Golden Rules to a Golden Glow

When you reach for your sunscreen, are you 100% certain you know what you are applying? Here are a few tidbits of knowledge to help you through the summer without getting burned.

Did you know that sunscreen loses its efficacy after 12 months? Ingredients that contain sun protection factors such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are active ingredients so they can’t be expected to last forever. They have a shelf life just like your peanut butter so be sure to purchase a new bottle every summer.

*Helpful tip: Mark your bottle of sunscreen with the date you bought it!

Did you know you should apply sunscreen (no matter then SPF) every TWO hours? Sunscreen does not block the sun entirely and although you may have slathered yourself with sunscreen, it is not meant to last you a whole day exposed to the Sun’s harmful rays.

*Helpful tip: If you out and about, set an alarm on your phone every two hours to remind you!

Are you covering all the necessary spots or just your nose? Ears, eyelids, the scalp, lips and feet are the most often forgotten body part when applying sunscreen. Be sure to cover these areas to protect yourself from sun damage and possible health concerns.

Helpful tip: Spray sunscreens are incredibly convenient and you can cover yourself in seconds without greasy hands! A few of our faves are La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Spray and Supergoop SPF 30 Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C.

5 Beauty Tricks for Better Looking Skin this Summer

Published on by

1. Don’t forget to exfoliate…properly!

As we move into summer, our skin needs a good cleanse to remove the dead skin we have accumulated through the winter months. But remember, there is too much of a good thing! Don’t over exfoliate in your haste for fresher looking skin. Mechanical exfoliants like scrubs with nuts, ground coffee or gritty materials as well as chemical exfoliants should only be used 2-3 times a week. If you are looking for a gentle exfoliant, we recommend the Nuxe Fondant Gentle Body Scrub.

2. Wash your pillowcases!

Make the most out of your beauty sleep! Since the summer heat brings perspiration and in turn, more oil production for most people we recommend changing your pillowcase every 3 days or so to ensure they aren’t harboring any pimple causing bacteria or irritants.

*Bonus tip: Try a satin pillowcase to ensure your blowout lasts longer! No one likes blow drying in the summer!

3. Clean your cellphone!

Ever wonder why one side of your face is breaking out? Clean that cell phone! This should be done all year round but especially in the summer time, we suggest carrying some wipes in your purse to give your cellphone a good cleanse and prevent breakouts.

4. Hydrate throughout the day!

Even if you are an oilier skin type, it is important to stay hydrated throughout the day. A small bottle of hydrating mist is great to look fresh when the temperature rises. We suggest the Avene Thermal Spring Water in the 1.7 oz size which is perfect for the office, gym bag or purse.

5. Wash your hair often!

Most women know the benefit of a good blow out and if you color your hair, you may be less inclined to wash every day. Washing more often in the summer can prevent breakouts where your hair may be touching your skin like neck, back and forehead. Hair products and perspiration don’t always mix so consider amping up your shampoos to every other day. For a squeaky clean finish, try the Frederic Fekkai Apple Cider Shampoo.

Hot Ingredient! Resveratrol

Published on by

Resveratrol is the hot new ingredient in the beauty world! Lately, the skin scene is a buzz with new treatments using the powerful phenol. Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes among other fruits. The content of resveratrol is increased when fermented which causes red wine to be the most potent source. Although, there is no documented proof that Resveratrol has any effect on cardiovascular disease, cancer or metabolism; it has been proven that Resveratrol can aid with skin protection. Since oxidative stress caused by multiple factors is a major factor in aging, Resveratrol is widely sought after for its antioxidant properties. Although this is no fountain of youth, if you are looking to try this new ingredient, here are a few of our favorites:

1. Topix Replenix Power of Three Cream: Replenix Power of Three Cream and Serum contain 90% Green Tea Polyphenols, Resveratrol and Caffeine U.S.P.

Replenix Power of Three Cream is an emollient with a soy phospholipid and hyaluronic acid base, while the Power of Three Serum is a lightweight, fast-absorbing formulation in a hyaluronic acid (humectant) base. Patients can choose the formulation based on their own skin type and preferences.

The majority of patients can experience the benefits of green tea, making this a welcome addition to the practice. Oily skinned and acne patients tend to prefer the serum, while dry skinned and more mature patients prefer the cream.

2. SkinCeuticals Resveratrol B E: With age and ongoing aggression, skin accumulates excessive free radical damage and loses its efficiency to effectively repair at night. This compounded effect leads to accelerated signs of damage such of loss of radiance, elasticity, and density.

This antioxidant night concentrate with a maximized concentration of 1% pure, stable Resveratrol, synergistically enhanced with 0.5% Baicalin and 1% Alpha Tocopherol (vitamin E) boosts skin’s own antioxidant defense system to promote its natural nightly repair for improved radiance, elasticity, and density.

3. Arcona Wine Hydrating Mask: This moisture binding mask helps to nourish skin while stimulating cellular renewal, reducing wrinkles, firming and smoothing. Leaves skin feeling supple, soothed and balanced.

Fact or Fiction? Common Myths in the Beauty World

Published on by

MYTH #1: The FDA ensures that all cosmetics statements are factual before you buy them.

A: FALSE! The FDA or Food & Drug Administration does not require approval of cosmetics before their manufacture and sale since the products are neither labeled for dietary consumption or as a medial supplement. The FDA onlySkinStore.com regulated the claims made and the labeling provided on each product. Cosmetics can ONLY claim to change the appearance of the body or skin, not the function.

MYTH #2: Sunscreen can actually increase the risk of skin cancer.

A: FALSE! Octinoxate is a chemical sunscreen that is preferred by sensitive skin types. Most physical sunscreens contain zinc oxide which can cause irritation. NO sunscreen can block 100% of the sun’s rays (UVB, UVA or otherwise). You will notice a large change in the way sunscreens are marketed in the United States. The Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, labels the strength of the sunscreen but does no matter how the strong sunscreen, they lose their potency after about two hours and need to be reapplied.

MYTH #3: Exfoliating scrubs can be used as an explosive.

A: FALSE! Most exfoliants or “scrubs” contain a variety of grainy materials ranging from fruit pits to seeds to diatomaceous earth, which help slough of dead skin cells from the surface. Diatomaceous earth (DE), marine sediment or fossil algae, is used in many other products not limited to the skincare industry. DE can also be combined with nitroglycerin to classify as dynamite, which is never found in skin care products.

MYTH #4: Your waterproof mascara coats your lashes in plastic.

A: TRUE! Plastic derivatives have been used in a variation of products for many years. Plastic derivatives or polymers are crucial in the production of hairspray, hair gel, liquid bandages and even perfumes. Polymers, when viewed under a microscope, are perfectly round spheres and do not damage the surface of the skin or irritate sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, or nose.

MYTH #5: Lipsticks contains a lethal amount of lead.

A: FALSE! In 2009, the FDA developed a method of testing to determine the amount of lead in products. It was then the FDA confirmed that the amount of lead found in lipstick was detected in 20 lipstick products but very low and did not pose any safety or health concerns. The lead levels are attributed to color additives and other ingredients that are acceptable by the FDA.

Re-Writing the Myth on Alcohols

Published on by

Contrary to popular belief, alcohols can actually have great skincare benefits. Not all alcohols are astringent or abrasive, some can even be moisturizing and conditioning. Alcohols are actually a classification of chemicals that react differently and more varied than you may think.

Ethanol (alcohol), generally found in alcoholic beverages, is synonymous with the word “alcohol” but is the only chain that has drying effects. Ethanol alcohol is used in products for oilier skin types because of the ability to absorb quickly.

If you are on the drier side and worried about alcohols in your products, don’t be alarmed if you see; cetyl, cetearyl, stearyl, behenyl, arachidyl or myristyl alcohols.

One of our fave eye creams that is super moisturizing contains cetyl alcohol, Neocutis Lumiere Bio-Restorative Eye Cream. You can find this and other amazing products on SkinStore.com!
