The winter season brings a host of skin concerns for many of us whether we spend our time outdoors in the cold or inside near the heater. Inside we are exposed to the drying heat of the heater that zaps the hydration out of your skin and outside we are exposed to searing cold which also works to dehydrate our skin very quickly (you’ve heard of freeze-dried?).

Dry cracked feet are a very common concern during the winter season, but what can you do? SkinStore.com Esthetician’s answer this question all winter long. Proper foot care all year round is important to your overall health and we always suggest that you focus on hydration on all parts of your skin including your feet daily through all seasons.

To remove the old surface skin the B. Kamins Elbow, Knee and Foot Treatment is an excellent place to start. This product comes in a two part kit which is a polishing scrub and an exfoliating cream. To start you can use up to twice daily to help gently remove the dead skin on your feet. If you require a little more aggressive approach you can incorporate a Ceramic File, Callus Rasp or a Buffer for additional callus removal by controlled friction. I recommend that you exercise caution when using tools on your feet, never go too aggressive as you could cause additional cracking or bleeding if you get your skin too thin. Recently I’ve seen many runway shows featuring red lips, bold eyes, and bold brows, this takes me back to the 1980’s when Robert Palmer was singing Addicted to Love, or Simply Irresistible with those uber-perfect 1980’s models that all looked alike. It’s amazing how history repeats itself, even from a makeup trend perspective! So here we are on the dawn of 2012 and the brows are back!

While reading a recent beauty blog I found some truly appealing, natural, and beautiful brow looks that are perfect for everyday wear. Bushy, messy, dark, and otherwise more natural looking brows are a nice change from years past when thin was in. For those still able to grow their brows, this trend may be a nice change. For those of us who have to pencil our brows in, well, let’s get to it!

One recommendation to keep your messy brows in place is the use of a great brow gel. For me, it doesn’t matter how I brush my brows, they always end up in the perfectly thin little line that they are and I just can’t get them to stay messy UNLESS I whip out my trusty brow gel, it’s the Billon Dollar Brows Brow Gel and this stuff works. The description says “why settle for messy brows?” but you know, if you have unruly brows that want to be compliant and non-messy, it works for that too!

To get bushy brows that are all the rage I like to start with the Billon Dollar Brows Angled Tip Spooly Brush to brush my brows out to give a thicker appearance, since my brows don’t grow well growing them out is simply not an option so faking it is a great alternative. After brushing my brows out, I gently apply the brow gel and let dry. Afterward, if you want a thicker brow look you can carefully apply a medium brown eye shadow directly over the brow gel to “fill in” and empty spots or simply to add thickness to your brows. Touch up as needed to achieve your desired look.

The first time I heard that someone had shingles my first questions was “what are they going to do with them?” I was so embarrassed that I thought it was a conversation about roof materials and not a skin rash! I quickly learned that shingles is a painful illness that is common among our maturing population, and it can be highly contagious.

What are shingles? Shingles are known in the medical community as Herpes zoster. It is caused by the Varicella zoster virus which is also the cause of chickenpox in children. In fact, because shingles is contagious to children or people who have never had chickenpox the virus can be contracted by them and can manifest as chickenpox.

How is shingles contracted? After a child has chickenpox, the Varicella zoster virus lay dormant in the root of the nervous system, or the part of the nervous system near the spine. As we age or experience compromises in our immune system, the virus can then reactivated and move out through the nervous system when factors like, stress, cancer, chemotherapy or HIV take hold of one’s health. However, there are also unknown causes for reactivation and the virus appears to become more common in those people 60 years or older.

What are the symptoms? Because shingles works its way through your nervous system, it will go down a nerve(s) and will often manifest in a characteristic pattern consistent with nerve regions. Shingles are generally accompanied by itchy blisters that can become filled with pus in addition to a generalized pain on the skin in the affected region. Pain can range from mild to excruciating.

If you experience any symptoms like the above you should seek the advice of your physician. Your physician can help you determine the best ways to soothe your skin and calm your rash. Common forms of soothing include calamine lotion and cool compresses.

As I was researching shingles, I came across a great video clip on the Dr. Oz website called Chickenpox Returns . It highly informative and has great visual aids to see what this illness looks like.
